Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1983, American band Berlin released their second single titled "Sex (I'm A)" that would peak at number sixty-two on the US Billboard Charts. While this was a minor hit for them, they did have one song that peaked at number one in the US What was it?

Answer: Take My Breath Away

Part of the lack of success to "Sex (I'm A)" has partially been attributed to the fact that it was banned on several radio stations across the United States as a result of some racy lyrics. The lines "I'm a man, am I bi?, I'm a man, I'm a slave, I'm a man, I'm a little girl, And we make love together" were sure to stir some controversy during a time when explicit content labels were not yet introduced.

On the flip side, "Take My Breath Away" was successful due to its inclusion on the soundtrack to the 1986 film "Top Gun" featuring Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis, and Val Kilmer. They lyrics to the song are not so racy and in fact are a love song. The song was so successful in fact that it spent 20 weeks in the US Billboard 100 and peaked at number one the week of September 13, 1986.

"Watching every motion
In my foolish lover's game
On this endless ocean
Finally lovers know no shame
Turning and returning
To some secret place inside
Watching in slow motion
As you turn around and say
Take my breath away"
2. "Candy Shop" was the second single released by hip-hop artist 50 Cent. It only took five weeks to make it to the number one spot on the US Billboard Charts in 2005. Even though it spent nine weeks at the number one spot, it was not the best performing single of the year. What song was the best performing single of 2005 instead?

Answer: We Belong Together - Mariah Carey

"Candy Shop" was the third single released by 50 Cent to reach the number one spot on the US Billboard Charts. In 2003, hit songs "In Da Club" and "21 Questions" would also hit the top spot. "Candy Shop" featured popular singer and actress Olivia on vocals. Starting the week of March 12, 2005, "Candy Shop" would spent nine straight weeks at the number one spot eventually being knocked out by Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl". Later in the year, Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" would spent two separate stints at the number one spot for a total of fourteen weeks taking a commanding control for the performing single of the year.
3. American rock band Kings of Leon released a top ten hit with a song that was never intended to be sexual in nature. What was the name of this "sex" related song?

Answer: Sex on Fire

"Sex On Fire" was written about lead singer Caleb Followill's girlfriend Lily Aldridge. During an interview with Australian radio station Triple J, the band claimed that the original song title was supposed to be "Set Us on Fire", but after experimenting with other lyrics and an ongoing joke, "Sex on Fire" stuck.

It peaked at the number one spot on the US Alternative Rock charts in 2008.
4. In 1982, English new wave band Bow Wow Wow covered the song "I Want Candy" making the top ten on the UK Singles Charts. What band originally released this song in 1964 peaking at #11 on the US Billboard Charts?

Answer: The Strangeloves

The Strangeloves released a version of "I Want Candy" that was performed in a similar style to Bo Diddley. The 1982 version by Bow Wow Wow featured singing by female singer Annabella Lwin but took a different style in the sound of African drums. While the Bow Wow Wow version had limited success in the United States, it would peak in the top ten in the United Kingdom. Singer Lwin was the subject of controversy as she had posed nude for the cover of the Bow Wow Wow album "See Jungle! See Jungle! Go Join Your Gang Yeah, City All Over! Go Ape Crazy!" in 1981.

As she was only 14 at the time of the photo, Scotland Yard did an investigation on behalf of her mother. As a result, an agreement was made that Lwin would not be used as a "sex kitten" and the photo never appeared on albums in most other parts of the world.
5. After releasing the number one singles "Careless Whisper" and "I Knew You Were Waiting For Me", what English singer born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou released a US Billboard top two song with "I Want Your Sex" in 1987?

Answer: George Michael

"I Want Your Sex" sparked controversy due to its sexual content and was played on various music video stations using an edited version. The song stayed in the US Billboard Top 10 for six weeks and in the Top 40 for fourteen weeks. It was also successful on the Canadian Charts also peaking in at number two.
6. The song "The Candy Man" originally appeared in what popular film starring Gene Wilder and Peter Ostrum?

Answer: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

"The Candy Man" was originally sung for the "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" soundtrack by Aubrey Woods (who played the candy shop owner in the film). The best known version of the song that was released and hit the US Billboard Charts was in 1972 by Sammy Davis, Jr peaking at the number one spot.

While popular by fans around the world, Sammy Davis stated that he disliked the song claiming that it was too sentimental or saccharine. Ironically, it would be the only number one hit for Davis.
7. The song "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" was included as a track on the album of the same name by what spicy band in 1991?

Answer: Red Hot Chili Peppers

"Blood Sugar Sex Magik" was unsuccessful as a song as it was never released as a single but the album itself included the hit single "Under the Bridge" which peaked at number two on the US Billboard Charts. It also spawned the three other RHCP singles "Suck My Kiss", "Breaking the Girl" and "If You Have To Ask" which were successful on US Alternative Singles charts and US Mainstream Rock charts, but never cracked the Top 40 on the US Billboard Charts.
8. What controversial 1980s singer recorded the song "Candy Shop" on her 2008 album "Hard Candy"?

Answer: Madonna

During the 1980s, Madonna released various singles that stirred controversy; most notably "Like a Virgin", "Like a Prayer", and "Live to Tell" for sensitive topics such as sexuality, religion, and relationship abuse. Still performing well into the 2000s, Madonna released her eleventh studio album "Hard Candy" in 2008.

The single "Candy Shop" had limited success, but two other songs "4 Minutes" and "Give It 2 Me" topped the US Dance Charts at the number one spot. The term "candy" as used in "Candy Shop" was used as a metaphor for... you guessed it... "sex"!
9. What American hip-hop trio released the educational safe sex track "Let's Talk About Sex" in August 1991?

Answer: Salt-n-Pepa

"Let's Talk About Sex" outlined some of the positive and negative sides to having sex. Some lyrics such as "I won't get got, I'm on the pill" outline the risks of getting pregnant while others note the realities of getting sexually transmitted diseases; "Until the sores start to puff and spore
He gave it to you, and now it's all yours". "Let's Talk About Sex" peaked in at number thirteen on the US Billboard Charts and at number two on the UK Singles Charts.
10. What one hit wonder band released their only US Billboard Top 10 hit "Sex and Candy" in 1997?

Answer: Marcy Playground

"Sex and Candy" would be the only Marcy Playground single to reach the US Billboard Charts peaking in at number eight. It would also peak at the number one spot on the Billboard Modern Rock Track charts for fifteen weeks in 1997. The band would have two other minor hits in 1998 and 1999 with "Saint Joe on the School Bus" and ""It's Saturday" respectively peaking at number eight and number twenty-five on the Billboard Modern Rock Track charts.
