Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which talented Belfast born singer has performed with Tom Jones on the tracks "Sometimes We Cry" (1999) and "Cry For Home" (2006)?

Answer: Van Morrison

"Sometimes We Cry" was written and originally performed by Van Morrison on his album, "The Healing Game" from 1997 and in the same year that Morrison and Jones teamed up to record it for Sir Tom's "Reload" album (1999), Morrison's daughter, Shana Morrison recorded it for her album, "7 Wishes" (1999), with her dad playing harmonica and sharing vocal duties towards the end of the song. "Cry For Home" is also a Van Morrison original, but this is an older track from his 1983 album, "Inarticulate Speech of the Heart", an album which didn't find much favour from critics on its release.

The Morrison / Jones version didn't fare too well either as it was released as a single but failed to chart in any of the major markets.
2. In the same year as playing Woodstock, who also appeared on the TV show, "This Is Tom Jones" performing a duet of "Raise Your Hand" with Tom?

Answer: Janis Joplin

A long time staple of Joplin live shows and a much loved audience favourite, "Raise Your Hand" was also the perfect song to allow Joplin and Jones to play off each other vocally.
The track was co written and originally recorded by Eddie Floyd in 1967, when it reached the top 20 on the Billboard Hot Rhythm & Blues Singles chart, but only got as far as number 79 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
3. "Pussycat" was a single from 2002, on which Tom Jones provided guest vocals accompanying which Haitian born artist?

Answer: Wyclef Jean

"Pussycat" (2002) was taken from Jean's album from the same year, "Masquerade" and while the album reached the top ten on the Billboard 200 in USA and top thirty on UK charts, the single failed to chart.
4. Tom Jones took the place of whose regular singing partner to duet on "The Beat Goes On" on a 1969 episode of his TV show, "This Is Tom Jones"?

Answer: Cher

"The Beat Goes On" was written by Cher's then husband and other half of Sonny and Cher, Sonny Bono and released by the duo as a single in 1967, faring well in charts around the world.
For his TV show, Tom Jones took the place of Sonny, and at the end of the song, Sonny, trying hard to act furious, marched onto the stage and dragged Cher off, leaving a bemused looking Tom. Let's just say that both were better at singing than acting.
5. Artists such as Canned Heat, Faces and Widowmaker have all recorded the Howlin' Wolf song, "Evil" (1954). With which multi Grammy winning musician did Tom Jones record the track in 2012?

Answer: Jack White

"Evil" was written by the great bluesman Willie Dixon and was the last song by Howlin' Wolf to chart, reaching number 43 on the Billboard R&B chart. Like so many essential blues tracks, it has been covered many times. Other than the artists mentioned in the question, Derek and the Dominoes, Captain Beefheart, Steve Miller and Gary Moore all performed versions of the song.
The Tom Jones / Jack White recording of the track wasn't a hit but it did serve to remind us of the versatility of Jones.
6. In 1970, on his TV show, "This Is Tom Jones", Jones sang a duet with Dusty Springfield of which song, a huge 1968 hit for Diana Ross & the Supremes and The Temptations?

Answer: I'm Gonna Make You Love Me

Tom has actually sang a few times with Dusty, including tracks such as "Sweet Sweetheart" on his TV show in 1971, and "You Got What It Takes" from the same show in 1972, as well as a cover of Diana Ross' disco classic "Upside Down", which they performed in 1983.
"I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" was originally recorded by Dee Dee Warwick, Dionne's sister, in 1966 and two years later, became a top three hit on the Canadian and UK charts as well as the Billboard Hot 100 in USA for Diana Ross & the Supremes and The Temptations.
Although Dusty Springfield was offered the chance to record the song, she passed it on to her backing singer, Madeline Bell and Dusty provided the backing vocals, helping Bell achieve a top 30 hot on the Billboard charts in USA.
7. In 1993, Tom Jones reached number 23 on the UK charts, performing a duet of "Gimme Shelter" with which rock band?

Answer: New Model Army

Yep. this was a strange one, Sir Tom teaming up with New Model Army for a cover of the Rolling Stones' 1969 track "Gimme Shelter", but maybe not so strange when you consider it was for charity, with all proceeds going towards the Putting Our House In Order homeless initiative started by the charity Shelter.
There were actually several different versions of the song recorded, in different genres, and if you think that Sir Tom and New Model Army was a strange pairing, check out the version by space rockers Hawkwind with former topless model Samantha Fox.
8. On the TV show, "This Is Tom Jones", two great voices teamed up for a duet in 1970. The song was "Delta Lady", but who sang it with Tom?

Answer: Joe Cocker

All four possible answers were guests on Tom's show in 1970, but for "Delta Lady", it could only be the great Joe Cocker, who had taken the Leon Russell penned track into the UK top ten the previous year.
The track is said to be about Russell's girlfriend at the time, singer Rita Coolidge, who herself had three top 20 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 in USA in 1977.
9. Tom Jones reached number five on the UK chart in 1988, performing a duet with which band on a cover of the Prince track "Kiss"?

Answer: Art Of Noise

The original of "Kiss" by Prince in 1986 peaked at number six in UK, so for synth pop band Art of Noise, along with a guest vocalist, albeit with an incredible voice, to take it a place higher was quite a feat. This was to be Tom's highest charting UK single for the next 12 years, until he hit number four with another duet and cover version, his take on "Mama Told Me Not To Come" with Stereophonics in 2000.
10. In 1969, on his TV show, "This Is Tom Jones", Tom performed a duet with which band, on the song "Long Time Gone", originally on their 1969 album, when they were a three piece band?

Answer: Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

"Long Time Gone" was included on CSN's eponymous debut album, released just weeks before Neil Young joined the band which then became CSNY.
The song was written by David Crosby who also shared lead vocal duties with Stephen Stills on the original.
