Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Skunk Anansie had four members, known as:

Answer: Skin, Ace, Cass and Mark Richardson

Skin, who fronted the band, and Cass, who played bass, were formerly in the group 'Mama Wild'. Ace, who played guitar, met Skin a year before Skunk Anansie formed, at his club, where he also DJed. Mark Richardson replaced Robbie France, the original drummer, shortly after Skunk Anansie's first album was released.
2. When was Skunk Anansie formed?

Answer: 1994

Formed in February, by July the band had written songs and were playing live. The band was quickly signed, after a representative of One Little Indian records saw their second gig.
3. 'Skunk Anansie' is an unusual name. We've all got an idea of what 'skunk' means, but what is 'Anansie'?

Answer: Mythological Jamaican spider

The name was chosen to reflect Skin's heritage. Skunk Anansie never shied away from politcal issues, such as racism, sexism, sexual violence, or police brutality. As Skin said, "It's just songs which reflect what we see walking down the street, stuff going on in our heads and things that touch us."
4. Skunk Anansie's first recording was in session on Radio One. Which track, which later appeared on their first album, did they play?

Answer: 'Little Baby Swastikkka'

The powerful anti-racist song was the first of these four early releases, which all appeared on Skunk Anansie's debut album, and were released as early singles or EPs, and failed to reach the top 40. But when 'Weak' came out in 1996, and 'Charity' was re-released, they took the band into the top 20 and brought them international attention.
5. What was the title of Skunk Anansie's first album?

Answer: 'Paranoid and Sunburnt'

Their first album had been recorded in 1994, and was released in late 1995. It has eleven tracks, and every one was a forceful gem. The album sold more than 200,000 copies in the UK alone, and confirmed the band's success.
6. Which of these styles of music did Skunk Anansie NOT claim to be influenced by?

Answer: Happy Hardcore

Skunk Anansie is usually categorised as a rock group, with a driving guitar sound and rhythmic basslines, but they were more complex than that. The emotional intensity of Skin's voice was used in more varied and melodic songs as the band developed.
7. What was Skunk Anansie's much anticipated second album named?

Answer: 'Stoosh'

Released in 1996, 'Stoosh' was every bit as strong as the first album. Singles such as 'Hedonism (Just because you feel good)', 'Twisted (Everyday hurts)', 'All I Want', and 'Brazen (Weep)', taken from the album, joined the list of fans' favourites. Skin described 'Stoosh' as "kind of a black, British, West Indian patois thing that means well dressed and looking really cool, but they'd still bite ya!"
8. Which huge British festival did Skunk Anansie headline in 1999?

Answer: Glastonbury

Skunk Anansie was a brilliant live band, bringing all the power of their recorded material, and more, to ever-larger audiences on their worldwide tours.
9. Finally, Skunk Anansie released their third album. What was its title?

Answer: 'Post Orgasmic Chill'

The 1999 album lived up to its name, being more laid-back and melodic than the first two. Although the album was not quite so well received, tracks such as 'Secretly' and 'Charlie Big Potato' were successful singles.
10. Sadly, after three albums and endless tours, the band felt the need to split - in which year?

Answer: 2001

Since the split, Skin has released a high-profile solo album and has been involved in a number of collaborations. The other band members have been working on their own projects, musical and artistic.
