The song was recorded in 1999 and released on September 19, 2000 from Outkast's fourth studio album "Stankonia." It is alternately classified as belonging to the alternative hip hop, rap rock, dance, experimental hip hop, and drum and bass genres. The formula-breaking song contains, according to Rolling Stone magazine, "manic drums, headbanging rock guitar, DJ scratches, [and] a gospel chorus."

The title stands for Bombs Over Baghdad and the song gained popularity during the Iraq War that lasted from 2003 to 2011. Writing in the Los Angeles Times, Robert Hilburn reports that while the song became a sort of anthem for the Iraq War, "Big Boi was strongly opposed to the U.S. invading Iraq without United Nations support and he never intended the song as a pro-war exercise."
