Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In this 1958 song "Splish Splash", what was the singer doing?

Answer: Taking a bath

Interestingly this song was recorded by Bobby Darin, who as we shall see in parts of this quiz, was very partial to "watery" songs!
2. In this 1954 song "Three Coins in the Fountain", also the theme song for the film of the same name, which Roman fountain is the setting?

Answer: Trevi Fountain

While the Bernouli and Albononi Fountains do not exist, the Bernini fountain sits at the foot of the Spanish Steps in Rome and is another great tourist attraction. The Bernini Fountain is more about cooling the feet than tossing coins!
3. Which singer had a "one hit wonder" with the song "Sea of Love", a song he not only co-wrote, but which, on its first outing, hit the number one position in the 1959 pop music charts?

Answer: Phil Phillips

Both Marty Wild and Tom Waits did perform this song, a song which became the theme tune for a movie of the same name.
4. "Cryin' in the Rain", first performed by the Everly Brothers, was co-written by a woman who would later go on to write and perform such songs as "Natural Woman", "So Far Away", and many others which formed part of her best selling 1971 album. Who was she?

Answer: Carole King

This is such an interesting piece of trivia for me. I didn't imagine that Carole King was writing such songs in the 60s. Did you?
5. Bobby Darin, who liked water songs it seems, was one of the foremost singers to make a signature hit out of this 1946 song, "Beyond the Sea"; so much so, that the song's title became the title of a 2004 movie about Bobby Darin's career. Who played Bobby Darin in this movie, singing with the same talent and cool as Bobby himself?

Answer: Kevin Spacey

Kevin Spacey surprised many, including me, with his performance. Many of us had him characterized as a great actor, but did not know that not only could he sing really, really well, but he could almost pass for Bobby Darrin.
6. "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head", performed by B.J. Thomas was written specifically by Hal David and Burt Bacharach for which 1969 movie?

Answer: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

If you guessed "Bonnie and Clyde", you probably thought it was about the bullets that keep falling on their heads during that tragically graphic closing scene of the movie!
7. Which classical European composer wrote a suite of music to be played for the king while he boated on the river?

Answer: George Fredric Handel

If you guessed Handel, he wrote the "Water Music Suite" for King George to enjoy while he floated about the River Thames with his court. Lucky man. Handel also wrote the "Firework Music", the occasion of which is a subject for another question, ha, ha!
8. In this 1955 song sung by Frankie Laine, entitled "Cool Water", the story tells of a very thirsty traveller taking a long journey across a desert. What is not clear is whether or not his travelling partner is another man, or the singer's horse. In any event, what is the name of this travel partner named by the singer?

Answer: Dan

Dan is referred to in the lyric as "Don't you listen to him Dan, he's a devil not a man, and he fills the burning sands with water, cool clear water". Obviously if one is hallucinating with thirst sitting atop a horse who is doing like-wise, this is not an unreasonable thing to be saying. On the other hand, it could possibly be a younger(?)travel companion who needs encouragement.
9. In this 1980 hit "Sailing", singer Christopher Cross extols the joys of sailing. One of the lyrics is "Oh the canvas can do _________, just you wait and see". What is it that the canvas (the ship's sails) can do?

Answer: Miracles

The only thing I can think of to say here, is why would any parents named Cross call their kid "Chris"? Chris Cross? Really? But then crissing and crossing is what you do when you tack in sailing, so perhaps it was the right name after all.
10. In 1961, this clarinet instrumental, written and performed by Acker Bilk, hit the number two position in the British pop music charts, then went on to be a number one hit in the US. What is the title of this watery proximity song?

Answer: Stranger on the Shore

This achievement of Acker Bilk's is a note-worthy one, since he achieved hit song status during a time when instrumentals were not normally accorded much popularity.
