Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. British for annoyed + a place travelled by cars = 1989 Tracy Chapman song and album

Answer: Crossroads

"Crossroads" is the first single released from the studio album also called "Crossroads" by Tracy Chapman. The song reached number ninety on the Billboard Hot 100 and number sixty-one in the UK. The album "Crossroads" is the second studio album by Chapman, following her massive success with "Fast Car" from her debut album titled "Tracy Chapman" which earned her six Grammy Award nominations.

She won three - for Best New Artist, Best Contemporary Folk Album and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
2. First name of boxer Frazier + slope = 1973 Dolly Parton song and album

Answer: Jolene

Dolly Parton released "Jolene" in October 1973 off her album of the same name. The song reached number one in Canada as well as on the Billboard US Country Song charts and was nominated for two Grammys, both for Best Female Vocal Country Performance, one for the original release and the second time for a live performance, though won neither.

However the group Pentatonix covered the song in 2017 and featured Parton in their a capella version; they were nominated for a Grammy for Best Country Duo/Group Performance, which they won, so Parton did end up getting a Grammy for this great song after all.

This song has had such an influence on artists, it has been covered many many times by everyone from Olivia Newton-John to the White Stripes and there are a fair number of answer songs written.

These answer songs are mostly written from the point of view of the Jolene character and there are quite a few of these songs!
3. Shout + not high = Coldplay song released in 2000

Answer: Yellow

"Yellow" was the lead single from the album "Parachutes" in the US and the second single from that album to be released in the UK. It was the breakthrough hit for the band internationally, reaching number one in Iceland, top ten in Australia and Ireland and number forty-eight in the US.

It was nominated for two Grammys - one for Best Rock Song and the other for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group. The video for the song was shot in Dorset, England and shows lead singer Chris Martin walking along a beach; it looks cold and wet and the video was shot using one continuous take with no cuts.

The entire band was supposed to be in the video however it was the funeral of the drummer's mother on the day of the video shoot and so it was decided that only Martin would appear in it.
4. Sprint + first letter of the English alphabet + measure heaviness = 1961 Del Shannon song

Answer: Runaway

Charles Westover, better known as Del Shannon, released this song in 1961 and it was a huge international hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and reaching number one in Canada, Chile, Australia, New Zealand and the UK. The song has been covered several times, including by heavy metal band Avenged Sevenfold, by supergroup The Traveling Wilburys, and by Elvis Presley, who included it on his 1969 album "On Stage."
5. A pleasurable journey + Actor Nolte + French for 'and' = 1997 Marilyn Manson song

Answer: Tourniquet

"Tourniquet" is the second release from the Marilyn Manson album "Antichrist Superstar". The song was used as the theme song for professional wrestler Jeff Hardy. The album did not receive very positive reception from mainstream media and was included in a list of other offensive albums by artists such as Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg who all worked with the talent agency MCA, who were accused by a bipartisan committee in the US of promoting vile and damaging music. Democrat Senator Joe Lieberman called Marilyn Manson "perhaps the sickest group ever promoted by a mainstream record company.

Despite this, the album fared quite well commercially and made it to quite a few 'best of' lists.
6. Dark color + member of the Aves class = 1968 Beatles song

Answer: Blackbird

"Blackbird" is a song from the double "White" album. It is a solo effort by Paul McCartney and his acoustic guitar. In a radio interview on KCRW in Texas in May 2002 Paul McCartney said that "this whole idea of 'you were only waiting for this moment to arise' was about, you know, the black people's struggle in the southern states, and I was using the symbolism of a blackbird.

It's not really about a blackbird whose wings are broken, you know, it's a bit more symbolic." The song has been covered by Sarah McLachlan and The Dandy Warhols and Dave Grohl sang it during the In Memoriam section of the 88th Academy Awards.
7. Exchange for money + recede + line of light + ignore = 1980 Kool and the Gang song

Answer: Celebration

If you've been to a wedding in your life, you've definitely heard this song. "Celebration" was a huge hit for Kool and the Gang in 1980 and the first and only song of theirs to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The song also reached number one on the Billboard Dance and R&B charts.

It was played on the radio into 1981 and in honor of the release of US hostages from captivity in Iran. Kylie Minogue covered the song in 1992 and she's included it in several tours and performed it at the 2000 Paralympics Opening Ceremony.
8. Enjoyment + it unlocks a door + small city = 1980 Lipps Inc song

Answer: Funkytown

"Funkytown" was released as the first single off the debut album by American band Lipps Inc. It was a massive international hit, going to number one in United States, West Germany, Canada, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, the Netherlands, and Australia. It stayed at number one in the US for four weeks and was the only song by the band to hit the top forty there. Lipps Inc were a quintessential disco band, with other songs such as "Rock It", "How Long" and "Addicted to the Night."
9. Under no control + not very smart = 1984 Wham! song or 1990 George Michael song

Answer: Freedom

These are two different songs. The Wham! song "Freedom" was released in 1984 and reached number three on both the US and UK charts. It was accompanied by a short mini-documentary style video of them touring China. The 1990 George Michael song is technically called "Freedom! 90" so as not to confuse with the 1984 Wham! song and is accompanied by a fantastic sexy and stylish video with major supermodels of the era, including Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista lip synching to the song. George Michael doesn't appear in the video at all. Two very different but awesome songs and two very different and innovative videos.
10. Low sound + male cow = Kendrick Lamar song

Answer: Humble

"Humble" was released by American rapper Kendrick Lamar in 2017 and reached number one in the US and New Zealand. In 2017 it was the only rap song to sell over 1,000,000 digital copies. The song was accompanied by a video with Lamar lying on a money table, dressed in a Pope-like cape and re-enacting "The Last Supper" by Leonardo da Vinci.

It was nominated for eight MTV Video Music Awards, ultimately winning six, including Video of the Year.
