After composing hits for Nancy Sinatra such as "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'", "How Does That Grab Ya, Darlin'" and "Summer Wine" Lee Hazlewood and Nancy recorded a duet album in 1968 titled "Nancy and Lee". In addition to "Sand" and "Summer Wine" the album included "Some Velvet Morning" and "Jackson". The "Nancy and Lee Again" album was released three years later.
Lee Hazlewood began his career as a disc jockey and later produced hits for guitarist Duane Eddy. Nancy Sinatra signed with her father's Reprise label and released a number of unsuccessful singles until "These Boots Were Made for Walkin'" became a hit.
Lee paired with Ann Margret for the 1969 album "The Cowboy and the Lady". "Gypsies and Indians" was a 1993 collaboration with Lee Hazlewood and Anna Hanski. Aida Fries played a belly dancer in "The Last of the Secret Agents?", a 1966 film co-starring Nancy Sinatra.

In the early fifties William Patton "Bill" Black, Jr. began playing clubs and radio shows with guitarist Scotty Moore. The pair was invited to back Elvis in 1954. When Black and Moore parted company with Elvis Presley in 1957 Black joined a group of musicians who would become Bill Black's Combo. Over the next three years the combo had eight Top Forty singles. Bill Black was only 39 when he passed in 1965.
Bass player Bob Moore formed The Bob Moore Orchestra and released "Mexico" in 1961. "Look For A Star" was a Top Forty from The Billy Vaughn Orchestra in 1960. "Ruby Duby Du" by Tobin Mathews and Co. reached Number 30 in 1960.

Neil Young composed "Cowgirl in the Sand" while recuperating from the flu at his Topanga Canyon residence. "Down by the River" and "Cinnamon Girl" were written at the same time. The ambiguous nature of the lyrics to "Cowgirl in the Sand" resulted in critics and various artists interpreting the song in diverse ways.

The song was the last song on side two of "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere". The only single released from the US Number 34 album was "Cinnamon Girl". "Southern Man" and "Ohio" were two successful songs penned by Young on the LP.

The Cookies had a sixties hit with "Chains", later recorded by The Beatles. Although they never topped the charts The Ronettes scored several hits including the Number Two "Be My Baby" in 1963. "Chapel of Love" by The Dixie Cups topped the charts for three weeks in 1964.
