Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Could Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) be on about a bird with their song "Turn ____ Stone"?

Answer: To

The song "Turn to Stone" appears on this British band's 1977 double album "Out of the Blue". After Roy Wood left in 1972, Jeff Lynne wrote, arranged and produced all the band's material. Some have said that they took over from where the Beatles left off. The Beatle connection was certainly there. George Harrison and Ringo Starr frequently put in appearances on ELO albums and Jeff Lynne was in the Traveling Wilburys with George Harrison. Jeff Lynne also produced a number of ex-Beatle records.
2. What was Van Morrison reflecting on in the song "And ______ Stoned Me"?

Answer: It

This song first appeared on the 1970 "Moondance" album and tells of a semi-mystical experience Irish singer Van Morrison has as a child. The song's chorus supplies the title for the song. Many of his songs hark back to his youthful times in Belfast, Ireland. His music career started in the late 1950s.
3. Song "_____stone Blues" meets Bob Dylan and the result is?

Answer: Tomb

Bob Dylan is an American singer-songwriter (and much more) who has been active for more that fifty years. He has been described as, musically and culturally, one of the most influential people in the Twentieth Century. "Tombstone Blues" comes from the 1965 "Highway 61 Revisited" album.
4. Now what do we have the Monkees proclaiming: "(I'm Not Your) _________ Stone"?

Answer: Stepping

The Monkees are an American band originating out of a TV show in the late 1960s. The band members were selected as musical actors by the TV unit. Early on, the band members had to fight to get artistic control over the band's music, in effect to become a "real" band. The TV show was cancelled in 1968 and the band stopped recording in 1971. A revival followed the re-airing of the TV show in 1986 and the band have done tours since then.
5. Could Queen have been feeling "Stone Cold _____" when they sang this?

Answer: Crazy

British rock band Queen started out in 1970. It was not until the albums "Sheer Heart Attack" (1974) and "A Night at the Opera" (1975) that the band began to have some success on the international scene. During the 1980s they became one of the most successful live performing bands in the world in terms of audience numbers. The song "Stone Cold Crazy" appeared on the album "Sheer Heart Attack".

The flamboyant lead singer Freddie Mercury died in 1991 of AIDS-related complications and the others decided to carry on without replacing him. In the five years from 2004 they toured as Queen + Paul Rogers.
6. Did The Temptations have it right when they sang "________ Was A Rolling Stone"?

Answer: Papa

The song was a Billboard 100 number one hit for American rhythm and blues (R&B) band The Temptations in 1972. It was originally written for and performed by another Motown band The Undisputed Truth but was not so successful. In a twist of irony, The Undisputed Truth's most successful record was in fact their 1971 version of "Smiling Faces Sometimes", first recorded by The Temptations in 1971.

The Temptations (originally The Elgins) were formed from two rival vocal groups The Distants and The Primes in 1961. In 1968 The Temptations had a parting of ways from their lead singer David Ruffin. For a month or so afterwards, he used to jump on stage, grab the microphone and sing one of his songs, despite security being deployed to prevent this. As of the end of 2012, twenty-two different singers have formed part of the group.
7. Did Steely Dan have a problem if they had a "Stone ______"?

Answer: Piano

Donald Fagen and Walter Becker are the core members of Steely Dan. This American jazz rock band was active from 1972, disbanding in 1981 before re-forming in 1993 for concert tours. Their music is not mainstream rock and pop, the lyrics are often cryptic and cerebral but after they stopped live performances in 1974 and became a studio band, a cult following developed.

They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.
8. Was John Prine writing about horror and fantasy fiction or a drug-addicted war vet called "______ Stone"?

Answer: Sam

The song covers the demise of a war veteran through drug abuse. The name of the war is not mentioned in the song, however it is taken as being the Vietnam War. The oft quoted lyric is: "There's a hole in daddy's arm, where all the money goes".

John Prine is an American country/folk singer-songwriter who has been active since 1971, releasing twenty-two albums as of 2011. He has been inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and as well as received various awards. Many of his songs have been covered by other artists.

Sam Stone is also the name of a British author. Her genre happens to be Gothic, horror and fantasy fiction hence the reference in the question.
9. Could Bob Dylan have been feeling a bit footloose when he sang "Like a ______ Stone"?

Answer: Rolling

"Like a Rolling Stone" from 1965 is arguably the song that launched Bob Dylan as a music icon. It appears at or near the top of a number of "Greatest Songs" lists. It has been covered many times by other bands and singers, including by The Rolling Stones.

A December 2004 New York Times article by Shaun Considine reveals that the record company rejected it as 'too long' at just under six minutes. Sales and Marketing wanted it halved. Bob Dylan refused and so it went on the reject pile. Considine got it played in a local club and it was demands from a couple of influential music industry professionals that got the record company to release it. Sales and Marketing had half of the song put on the A-side and the remainder on the B-side. This did not prevent some disc jockeys joining the two halves back together!
10. I could not do a music quiz about stones without a question involving The Rolling Stones. So here it is. What did they feel when they sang about a "_________ of Stone"? (NOTE: 'They' can be any or all of the following: The Rolling Stones, Cher, Bucks Fizz, Taylor Dayne and Chris Knight.)

Answer: Heart

They've all recorded songs called "Heart of Stone", as have a few others as well. In Cher's case it was the one originally recorded by Bucks Fizz, although her 1989 album containing the song was also called "Heart of Stone". Chris Knight put the song on his 2008 album, also called "Heart of Stone".

They all had some chart success although The Rolling Stones 1964 version probably did the best.
