Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jane Taylor, an English author from the turn of the 19th century, wrote the words to which nursery rhyme?

Answer: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star

The famous rhyme came from her 1806 volume called 'Rhymes for the Nursery'. 'Star Light, Star Bright' was released in the late 19th century, by that well known author, A. Nonymous.

'The Star-Spangled Banner' is the national anthem of the USA and 'Sunshine Superman' was by Scottish singer, Donovan.
2. This song was written following the death of the mother of the lead singer, Pat Monahan. It won a Grammy in 2001, and hit Top 10 on several music charts. What song is it?

Answer: Drops Of Jupiter

'Drops Of Jupiter (Tell Me)' by Train, is a treasure trove of astrology! Snippets of lyrics include 'sail across the sun', 'return from her stay on the moon', 'make it to the Milky Way', 'did you fall from a shooting star?', 'Tracing her way through the constellation'.

'Mercury Blues' is not about the planet- it is an Alan Jackson song about a car. 'Venus' has been released by many people. 'Hallucinating Pluto' is a 1998 offering from the B-52s.

Pictured is Jupiter, with the Great Red Spot clearly visible, just south of the Jovian equator.
3. 'Under the Southern Cross I Stand' is a sporting anthem in Australia, and is sung whenever the national team win a game. What sporting team delivers it with great gusto (and not a lot of musical talent)?

Answer: Cricket

Former Australian champion wicketkeeper, Rod Marsh, started the tradition in the mid 1970s, and ever since the honour of leading the song has passed through quite a few sets of hands (and lungs).

The constellation, also known as Crux, has been a part of Australian history for many thousands of years, with many Aboriginal legends attributed to it. It was on the Eureka flag, raised in 1854 in protest against gold mining licences, and has been on the Australian national flag (pictured) since 1901.
4. 'Man on the Moon' was a 1992 hit for R.E.M. It was created in memory of a quirky comedian, who had died a few years earlier. Who was that man?

Answer: Andy Kaufman

Composer and REM singer, Michael Stipe, was a fan of Kaufman's, and there are many references to the funny man's life and career. The song title related to his penchant for complex practical jokes, and the conspiracy theories that still haunt the moon landing.

My photo is of Buzz Aldrin, as taken by Neil Armstrong, and is one of the most iconic pictures of the 'alleged' landing, in 1969.
5. 'Star Trekking' was a sendup of the 'Star trek' phenomenon, released in 1987, by British duo, John O'Connor and Grahame Lister. What was the name of their act?

Answer: The Firm

I must confess that I owned the 12" single of this earworm, and played it to death. The B-side was 'Start Wrecking', and just as bad!

Cannon and Ball are a British comedy duo, and the Spockettes and Trekstars are products of my imagination.
6. 'Total Eclipse Of The Heart' is a high-energy ballad by Bonnie Tyler, which scaled the charts in 1983. The gravelly-voiced Bonnie was born as Gaynor Hopkins, but what nationality is she?

Answer: Welsh

She was born in southern Wales, in 1951. Her first major hit was 'Lost in France' (1977), followed quickly by 'It's a Heartache' the following year. Her huskiness of voice followed an operation on her throat.

In an interesting twist, 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' kept Air Supply's hit of 'Making Love Out of Nothing at All' from the Number One spot in 1983. In 1995, she had a minor hit with a cover of the same song.

My picture is a total eclipse of the moon.
7. 'The Galaxy Song' is a fun song from the Monty Python crew, outlining the huge dimensions of space. Which movie did it come from?

Answer: The Meaning of Life

Eric Idle sings the song to convince Mrs Brown to give up her liver- it must have impressed her, because she willingly donated it!

Pictured is Andromeda Galaxy, one of the 'one of millions of billions' of galaxies mentioned in the song.
8. The 1963 instrumental, 'Telstar' by The Tornados was a huge hit, and one of the few British acts to hit the top spot in the US market. What was the main purpose of the satellite (pictured)?

Answer: Communications

The satellite, launched in 1962, is only tiny- the diameter is less than one metre. It transmitted telephone, fax and television traffic between Europe and the US before suffering major problems just six months later, and going out of service. However, it was the first of many and proved that worldwide transmissions were feasible.

Sputnik I and its successor, Sputnik II, are still orbiting Earth.
9. Gustav Holst wrote the 'The Planets' between 1913 and 1916. It is a very impressive orchestral work, comprising seven movements, one for each planet. Besides Pluto (which had not yet been discovered), which planet did NOT have a movement named for it?

Answer: Earth

Each planet was allocated a 'personality' by Horst, based on mythological and astrological themes. For instance, 'Mars' was the Bringer of War and 'Uranus' was the Magician. Earth was not a character in mythology, so we missed out!
10. 'Our whole universe was in a hot dense state, Then nearly fourteen billion years ago expansion started. Wait...' These are the first couple of lines to the 'Big Bang Theory' television series. Who sings the opening song to this very funny show?

Answer: The Barenaked Ladies

The Barenaked Ladies are neither naked, nor ladies. They are four men from Canada, who simply made up the name to attract attention! They had several albums and singles before supplying the theme song to 'Big Bang Theory', in 2007.

DeEtta Little and Nelson Pigford sang 'Gonna Fly Now', the theme for 'Rocky', and They Might Be Giants did 'Boss of Me' for 'Malcolm in the Middle'.
