Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Can you finish the opening lyrics to this Bobby Darin 1959 classic song, "Mack the Knife"? "Oh, the shark, babe, has such teeth, dear _______________________________"

Answer: And it shows them pearly white

"Die Moritat von Mackie Messer", or "The Ballad of Mack the Knife", was originally written for a German opera which opened in 1928 called "The Threepenny Opera". It told of Macheath, an underworld criminal involved in rape, robbery and murder. The beginning lyrics to "Mack the Knife" do not relate to shark teeth as it suggests, but to the knife used in criminal activity by Macheath.

The song was a great success for Bobby Darin towards the beginning of his career but it was to become his only number one single in the US Billboard Hot 100.

Robbie Williams was keen to record an album featuring his favourite big band songs. "Swing When You're Winning" featured such songs and these included the cover version of "Mack the Knife".
2. Robbie Williams sang the cover version of "Somethin' Stupid" in 2001, reaching number one in the UK singles chart. Which female was the other half of the singing duet?

Answer: Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman was no novice when it came to vocal talent as she had already starred in the 2001 film, "Moulin Rouge!". Her songs for that film included "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend", "One Day I'll Fly Away" and the "Elephant Love Medley" with Ewan McGregor.

"Somethin' Stupid" was written in 1966 by C. Carson Parks and made famous a year later by Frank and Nancy Sinatra.

The song featured in the Robbie Williams album "Swing When You're Winning" and became his fifth number one in the UK Singles Chart.
3. Who performed "Well, Did You Evah!", the Cole Porter song which featured in the 1956 film, "High Society"?

Answer: Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra

The song was initially written by Cole Porter in 1939 for the musical "DuBarry Was a Lady" which featured Betty Grable and Charles Walters. Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra sang the same song in "High Society" which also starred Grace Kelly. The film told of three very different men who all fell in love with the same woman and included the beautiful ballad, "True Love".

Robbie Williams teamed up with American actor Jon Lovitz to sing the 2001 cover of "Well, Did You Evah!". Lovitz was famous for his TV work in "Saturday Night Live" between 1985 to 1882, followed by film appearances including "The Wedding Singer" (1998) and "The Producers" (2005).
4. Which of the following songs is the common link between The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Sammy Davis Jr, Frank Sinatra and Robbie Williams?

Answer: Mr. Bojangles

"Mr. Bojangles" was written in 1968 by Jerry Jeff Walker after an encounter with an alcoholic tap dancer in a New Orleans jail. It became popular in 1971 when country singers, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, took it to number nine in the Billboard Hot 100. The song was also a popular choice for Rat Pack members, Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis, Jr..

Robbie Williams released his version of the song in 2002 but it only had minor success in the German, Dutch and Swiss charts.
5. In which 1960 film did Dean Martin sing "Ain't That a Kick in the Head?"

Answer: Oceans 11

This classic song was written by Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen. In the 1960 film "Oceans 11", Dean Martin played Sam Harmon, a lounge singer who sang "Ain't That a Kick in the Head?" to an audience in a casino. He was part of a group of eleven men who planned to rob five casinos overnight.

Robbie Williams sang the cover version for his 2001 album, "Swing When You're Winning". The album peaked in various European countries, including Switzerland, Germany, Ireland and the United Kingdom.
6. Frank Sinatra often asked in one of his songs, "Have You Met __________?" Who was he talking about?

Answer: Miss Jones

"Have You Met Miss Jones?" was written in 1937 by Lorenz Hart and Richard Rodgers for the musical, "I'd Rather Be Right". They also wrote in partnership the songs "The Lady Is a Tramp", "Blue Moon" and "My Funny Valentine". "Have You Met Miss Jones?" has been a cover song for Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Robbie Williams.
7. Which of these songs was written in 1943 by French songwriter, Charles Trenet?

Answer: La Mer

"La Mer" is better known as "Beyond the Sea", a hit song for Bobby Darin in 1960. "La Vie en rose" was sung by Edith Piaf, "Mimi" by Maurice Chevalier and "Joe le taxi" by Vanessa Paradis, partner of Johnny Depp. Robbie Williams released his cover version of "Beyond the Sea" which was used as part of the soundtrack for the 2003 Disney animated film, "Finding Nemo".
8. Which Frank Sinatra song do these lyrics come from? "But now the days are short, I'm in the autumn of the year And now I think of my life as vintage wine from fine old kegs"

Answer: It Was a Very Good Year

"It Was a Very Good Year" was made famous by Frank Sinatra in 1966 when he was awarded the Grammy Award for Best Male Vocal Performance. Even though Sinatra died in 1998, he sang the song as a 2001 duet with Robbie Williams at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Special permission was granted by Sinatra's family for Williams to sing the first two verses, followed by a large stage recording of Sinatra singing the last two verses.
9. What are the missing words from the lyrics to this Bobby Darin classic? "Every night I sit here by my window Staring at the lonely avenue Watching lovers holding hands and laughing And thinking about the ______________"

Answer: Things we used to do

"Things" was a 1962 song written and sang by Bobby Darin which reached number three in the Billboard Hot 100 and number two in the UK Singles Chart. Robbie Williams sang the cover version in 2001 with British actress, Jane Horrocks. Horrocks was well known for her role in the television series, "Absolutely Fabulous". She was also a brilliant singing impressionist, mimicking the voice of Ethel Merman, Judy Garland and Shirley Bassey.
10. Which of these was the only original song on the Robbie William's 2001 album, "Swing When You're Winning", and not a cover version?

Answer: I Will Talk and Hollywood Will Listen

"I Will Talk and Hollywood Will Listen" was written by Guy Chambers and Robbie Williams. It did not have success in any of the singles charts. The lyrics included "Mr Spielberg look just what you're missing, doesn't that seem a little absurd, bow at my every word". Robbie Williams has tried to establish a musical career in America without much success so he concentrated instead on Europe where his following was unsurpassed. He has sold 70 million records worldwide which lists him in the same group as Meat Loaf, Foreigner and Iron Maiden.
