Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dean is best known in the UK for his biggest hit "Lucky Stars" but what was his only Billboard Hot 100 hit in the US?

Answer: Ariel

"Ariel" reached Number 26 on the Hot 100 in 1977. It includes a mention in the lyrics for Dean's home town of Paramus.

It also references the "Star Spangled Banner".
2. One of Dean's singles was banned in the UK by the BBC.

Answer: True

The song "McDonald's Girl" was banned as the BBC felt it would give publicity to the global restaurant chain - which of course it would have done.
3. Which of these is NOT the title of one of Dean's albums?

Answer: Year of the Cat

"Year of the Cat" is by fellow singer-songwriter Al Stewart.

Dean's other albums have been "Dean Friedman" (the first album); "Songs for Grownups" and "The Treehouse Journals".
4. From which song does the following lyric come? "She was collecting quarters in a paper cup. She was looking for change and so was I."

Answer: Ariel

The original version of "Ariel" (which appears on Dean's eponymous first album) was edited for radio play to omit the line, "She was a Jewish girl. I fell in love with her."

My favourite line is, "I said, "Hi". She said, "Yeah, I guess I am."".
5. Which girl's name features in the lyrics of "Lucky Stars"?

Answer: Lisa

The song was a duet with Denise Marsa.
"Marsa: Did you see Lisa?
Friedman: Yes I saw Lisa.
Marsa: Is that why you're angry?
Friedman: I wasn't angry.
Marsa: Maybe a little.
Friedman: Not even maybe.
Marsa: Must be the weather.
Friedman: Now don't be a baby.
Marsa: Well how am I supposed to feel with all the things you don't reveal and you can thank your lucky stars that we're not as smart as we'd like to think we are."

The band, Half Man, Half Biscuit have released a song called "The Bastard Son of Dean Friedman". In an interview with the Scotsman newspaper in 2003, Dean hinted that they might have discovered the underlying story in "Lucky Stars". (Source : Scotsman, 12 August 2003)
6. "McDonald's Girl" was covered by Barenaked Ladies. It was also recorded by Minneapolis based band the Blenders who took it to Number one in which European country?

Answer: Norway

Most of Dean's songs include lyrics that make you smile. In this case my favourite was, "She don't treat me like a simpleton. She's not afraid to be the only other virgin I know."
7. Which song, from the album "Squirrels in the Attic" took as its subject matter political life in America albeit in humorous fashion?

Answer: I Miss Monica

Unfortunately, there's not much from the lyrics that I could reproduce here. Suffice to say that Dean wasn't one of George W.'s greatest fans.
8. Dean wrote music for which long-running UK TV series about a private investigator?

Answer: Boon

"Boon" aired between 1986 and 1992. Barrington Pheloung provided the music for "Inspector Morse" although he did also contribute music for the first series of "Boon".
9. In 1985, Dean wrote a book about an emerging musical technology. What was it called?

Answer: Synthesizers, Sequencers, and Drum Machines

Dean has also developed video games and software through his company InVideo Systems and futuristic musical instruments for children through a second company, Cool Stuff for Kids. This has led him to work with clients such as Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and Nickelodeon.
10. What was unusual about the album "The Treehouse Journals"?

Answer: Production costs were covered by fans paying in advance

Dean was one of the first artists to capitalise on a loyal and existing fan base in this way. The subsequent release "Squirrels in the Attic" was similarly financed.
