Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During the week of January 11, 1975, these two former Beatles enjoyed success on the U.S. Billboard's Top 20 chart at the same time. Who were they?

Answer: Paul and George

Paul McCartney and George Harrison both had hits within the Top 20 of the U.S. Billboard chart during the week of January 11, 1975. Paul charted at Number Three with "Junior's Farm" while George sat at number 15 with "Dark Horse".
2. The Beatles all had solo hits on the U.S. Billboard Top 40 chart at the same time during the week of April 10, 1971.

Answer: False

During the week of April 10, 1971, John, Paul, and George all had solo hits on the U.S. Billboard Top 40 chart; only Ringo missed making the chart. John placed at number 40 with "Power to the People", George sat at number 14 with "What Is Life", and Paul rested within the Top Ten at number eight with "Another Day/ "Woman, Oh, Why".
3. During the week of December 29, 1973, three of the four former band members each had a song within U.S. Billboard Top 30. Which one missed joining his former band mates?

Answer: George

George Harrison was the lone ex-Beatle to not have a song within the U.S. Billboard Top 30 at the end of the year, in 1973; in fact, he was nowhere to be found on the chart that winter.

Paul McCartney sat at number 16 with "Helen Wheels", John Lennon was two slots back at number 18 with "Mind Games", and Ringo Starr had two songs positioned back-to-back at number 27 ("You're 16") and number 28 ("Photograph").
4. In 1981, this former Beatle was the only one NOT to have placed a song on the U.S. Billboard Top 40 chart. Which one was it?

Answer: Paul

Although a prolific songwriter and artist who charted more often than his former band mates combined, Paul McCartney failed to make a dent on the U.S. Billboard Top 40 chart, in 1981. Ringo Starr almost joined him in missing the Top 40, but squeaked in (barely) at number 39 with "Wrack My Brain".
5. All the members of the former supergroup had success in charting hits on the U.S. Billboard Top 40 charts during the 1970s and 1980s, oftentimes placing songs on the charts at the same time. Tell me, how many times did two of the former members place hits within the U.S. Billboard Top Ten at the same time?

Answer: 2

Between 1970-1989, only twice did ex-Beatle members place songs within the U.S. Billboard Top Ten at the same time. The first time it occurred was on June 16, 1973, with Paul McCartney and George Harrison; McCartney had the Number One song in the U.S. with "My Love" and Harrison was at slotted at Number Eight with "Give Me Love".

On December 28, 1974, it happened again when McCartney placed at Number Six with "Junior's Farm/"Sally G" while Ringo Starr had the Number Nine song in the land with "Only You".
6. During the week of January 26, 1974, Ringo Starr had the Number One song on the U.S. Billboard Top 40 chart with "You're 16". Which one of these songs by his former band mates was also in Top 20 that week?

Answer: Helen Wheels

While Ringo enjoyed success at the Number One spot on the U.S. Billboard Top 40 chart during the last week of January, 1974, former Beatle, Paul McCartney also had a song in the Top 20 with "Helen Wheels", which charted at number 17.
7. Who was the first Beatle to place a song in the Top Ten on the U.S. Billboard Top 40 chart at the same time that the group also had a song in the Top Ten?

Answer: John

During the week of March 28, 1970, the Beatles sat at Number Two on the U.S. Billboard Top 40 chart with "Let it Be" and right behind them in the Number Three position was "Instant Karma", by John Lennon. He was the first member of the group to place a song in the U.S. Top Ten as a solo artist while the band also had a hit positioned there.
8. In July of 1976, this song by one of the former members shared time within U.S. Billboard Top Ten with a re-release of the Beatles' song, "Got to Get You Into My Life"; which song was it?

Answer: Silly Love Songs

Paul McCartney's "Silly Love Songs", which had just fallen from the Number One spot in the U.S. the previous week, found itself stationed at Number Six while his former group was just arriving in the Top Ten at number ten, with the re-release of their 1966 tune, "Got to Get You Into My Life". Paul's song would fall out of the Top Ten the following week, while the group's song would settle in at Number Seven.

Interestingly, Paul would re-join his former band mates again in the Top Ten during the following week of July 24th with his song "Let 'Em In", which would finally peak at Number Three a few weeks later.
9. Which ex-Beatle knocked Paul McCartney's song, "My Love", from the Number One spot on the U.S. Billboard Top 40 chart in the summer of 1973?

Answer: George

After spending a month at the top spot on the U.S. Billboard Top 40 chart with "My Love", George Harrison took over the position from his former bandmember with his song, "Give Me Love", for a week.

Interestingly, Harrison was then knocked out of the Number One spot by another 'former member', so to speak, as Billy Preston (often referred to as 'the fifth Beatle'), replaced him with his song, "Will It Go 'Round in Circles".
10. Of the songs listed below by the former band mates, which one stayed at the Number One spot on the U.S. Billboard Top 40 chart the longest?

Answer: My Sweet Lord

George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" held the Number One position on the U.S. Billboard Top 40 chart for four weeks in 1970, which was the longest time over John's, Paul's, and Ringo's entries. John's and Ringo's songs ("Whatever Gets You Through the Night", 1974; "Photograph", 1973) each held the top spot for only a week, while Paul's song, "With A Little Luck" (1978) had a two week run.
11. Ringo Starr's hit, "Back Off Boogaloo", barely made the U.S. Billboard Top 40 chart, in 1972, rising no higher than Number 37.

Answer: False

"Back Off Boogaloo" was Ringo's second straight Top Ten smash on the U.S. Billboard Top 40 chart, in 1972. The song stayed on the charts for seven weeks, finally coming to a stop at Number Nine.
12. This ex-Beatle was the only one to have had two Number One hits on the U.S. Billboard Top 40 chart in the same year. Which one accomplished this feat?

Answer: Ringo

Oftentimes overlooked while he was in the group, Ringo Starr was a musical force to be reckoned with once he began his solo career and he proved this in 1973 by placing two songs at Number One on the U.S. Billboard Top 40 chart, "Photograph" and "Only You", each one staying a week at that position.
13. All the ex-Beatle members had hits on the U.S. Billboard Top 40 chart in the 1980s.

Answer: True

John, Paul, George, and Ringo all enjoyed entries on the U.S. Billboard Top 40 chart during the 1980s albeit with differing success.

Paul had the greatest success by placing ten hits onto the U.S. Billboard Top 40 chart, three of which went all the way to Number One ("Coming Up", 1980; "Ebony and Ivory", 1982; "Say, Say, Say", 1983). He also had four songs to get into the Top Ten with "Take It Away" (number ten, 1982), "The Girl Is Mine" (number two, 1982), "No More Lonely Nights" (number sin, 1984), and "Spies Like Us" (number seven, 1985), which was the title track of the movie with the same name.

John Lennon charted four times, posthumously, in the 80s with "Starting Over", which enjoyed a five week stay in the Number One slot. He also had three other hits to make the Top Ten, "Woman" (number two, 1981), "Watching the Wheels" (number ten, 1981), and "Nobody Told Me" (number five, 1984).

George Harrison placed three songs on the U.S. Billboard Top 40 chart during the 1980s; they were, "All Those Years Ago" (number two, 1981), "Got My Mind Set On You" (number one, 1987), and "When We Were Fab" (number 23, 1988).

Finally, Ringo placed his only hit of the 1980s on the U.S. Billboard Top 40 chart with "Wrack My Brain", which only rose as high as number 38, but quickly fell out of the Top 40 after two weeks.
14. In what year during the 1980s could you NOT find a song by an ex-Beatle on the U.S. Billboard Top 40 chart?

Answer: It never happened. An ex-Beatle always had a song on the U.S. Billboard Top 40 chart

Yet another testament to the Beatles being the greatest band in rock and roll history, in my opinion, was their success as solo artists and the men proved it again in the 1980s. While their success wasn't as prolific during the 80s as it was in the 1970s (McCartney being the exception), all the members placed songs on the U.S. Billboard Top 40 chart during that time; in fact, there was not a single year in that decade where an ex-Beatle did not place at least one song in the Top 40.
15. In the spring of 1979, two of the four ex-Beatles placed hits on the U.S. Billboard Top 20 chart at the same time. Who were they?

Answer: Paul and George

On April 28, 1979, both Paul McCartney and George Harrison had hits on the U.S. Billboard Top 20 chart at the same time. McCartney's "Goodnight Tonight" stood at Number Nine, while Harrison's "Blow Away" sat at Number 17.
