Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One o'clock. The cuckoo comes out and makes it clear that this is war. Its opening shot is "Mother of Mine". I install ear plugs and try to rise above it. Who sang this song?

Answer: Neil Reid

Neil Reid was a Scottish child singing star. He won "Opportunity Knocks", a UK television talent show, in December 1971, singing "Mother of Mine". The song was then released by Decca and went to number two on the UK Singles Chart. His debut album went to number one on the Album Chart. That however was it, he never had another hit record, and after his voice broke he completely gave up professional singing.
2. Two o'clock. The cuckoo announces that "Someone left the cake out in the rain". My machete sweep misses it completely. Do cat's tails grow back? Who sang the song this line is from?

Answer: Richard Harris

"MacArthur Park" is one of the stranger records made. Spoken rather than sung by actor Richard Harris it lasted for over seven minutes. It peaked at number ten on the Billboard Easy Listening chart in 1968. In 1978 Donna Summer revived it in a disco format, and her record spent three weeks at number one on the American Pop Music Sales Chart.
3. Three o'clock. The cuckoo hits new depths of horror, warbling out "Wave a chicken in the air, stick a deckchair up your nose". The crossbow bolt misses it, but I do now have a new indoor water feature. The cast of which show are responsible for this song?

Answer: Spitting Image

Intended as a parody of such songs as "Agadoo", "The Chicken Song" featured heavily in the "Spitting Image" programme, being sung or hummed by various members of the cast. Subsequently it was released (or escaped depending on your viewpoint) as a single and spent three weeks at number one on the UK Singles Chart in 1986.
4. Four o'clock. The cuckoo breaks through the superglue I applied to his door and takes his revenge with "The Laughing Gnome". Which big star would probably prefer to forget this record?

Answer: David Bowie

"The Laughing Gnome" was originally released as a novelty record in 1967 and failed to bother the charts. It was reissued in 1973 when Bowie was at the height of his Ziggy Stardust fame, and made number six on the UK Singles Chart.
5. Five o'clock. I am armed and ready, as the cuckoo leaps out singing "Ooh boys cheeky girls" I open the cage full of feral cats. As they shred the furniture to pieces instead of the cuckoo I'm sure I hear it laughing. Who sang this song?

Answer: The Cheeky Girls

The Cheeky Girls, twin sisters from Romania, came to prominence on the talent show "Popstars The Rivals". They did two auditions but failed to make it past the audition stage with either attempt. They did however attract the attention of several record companies with the result that their debut single "The Cheeky Song (Touch My Bum)" was released in December 2002, making it to number two on the UK Singles Chart.
6. Six o'clock. The completely undamaged cuckoo pops out to sing "Blobby Blobby Blobby". As the professional marksman takes aim one of the feral cats bites him and the only thing shot is the ceiling. Who sang "Mr Blobby"?

Answer: Mr Blobby

Mr Blobby was introduced to us by Noel Edmonds in his "Noel's House Party" BBC Television series. A big pink blob with yellow spots, he blundered around causing general chaos. He never said anything but "Blobby", the inflection in the voice being the only way the word could be interpreted.

He was played by various members of the production team. The song "Mr Blobby" made number one on the UK Singles Chart on 11 December 1993, it was then knocked off the top spot, but returned one week later to become the Christmas number one for that year.
7. Seven o'clock. The cuckoo materialises to the strains of "Doctorin The Tardis". Unfortunately my screwdriver isn't sonic and didn't screw up his door in time. Who gave us this memorable tune?

Answer: The Timelords

"Doctorin The Tardis" was a number one on the UK Singles Chart in 1988. It consisted of the electronic theme tune of "Doctor Who" mixed in with some old disco hits. Music critics hated it with "Sounds" magazine calling it "rancid".
On the strength of their one and only hit record The Timelords wrote a book called "The Manual (How to Have a Number One the Easy Way)".
8. Eight o'clock. If that door opens my booby trap will blow the cuckoo to kingdom come. The cuckoo however is cleverer than I, and dances out of a side door singing "Macarena". Who do we have to thank for this song?

Answer: Los Del Rio

Released in 1995 "Macarena" made number two on the UK Singles Chart. A Latin American dance song, both the song and dance swept the world. It was heard everywhere, and it is popularly believed that a World Record for group dancing was set when, in 1996. a 50,000 strong crowd danced the macarena at Yankee Stadium.
