Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which band recorded a video for their song "All Nightmare Long", where the end of the world comes from Soviet biological experiments?

Answer: Metallica

The music video begins with the 1908 Tunguska event, and dust is found containing spores that the Soviets begin experimenting with. Eventually they create a zombie army to take over the world. As expected, humanity gets wiped out.
2. Creedence Clearwater Revival recorded a song about an approaching apocalypse, inspired by the movie "The Devil and Daniel Webster". What is it titled?

Answer: Bad Moon Rising

"Bad Moon Rising" was released as a single in 1969. In a interview, John Fogerty said a scene in "The Devil and Daniel Webster" showed a major storm destroying all the houses and crops except Daniel Webster's, and inspired the song's composition.
3. What band knows it's the end of the world, but still feel pretty good?

Answer: REM

The song is "It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)". Although one of REM's better-known songs, it originally only reached number 69 on the Billboard Hot 100.
4. Which song about a 99 year war reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1984?

Answer: 99 Luftballons

The original, in German and performed by Nena, peaked at number two, while a later version with English lyrics, "99 Red Balloons", was largely ignored in the US. There have been very few other German language songs that charted in the US, such as Falco's "Rock Me Amadeus", which reached number one in 1986.
5. Which 1960s protest song contains the lyrics "If the button is pushed / there's no runnin' away / There'll be no one to save with the world in a grave"?

Answer: Eve of Destruction

Written in 1964, and covered by many bands throughout the 60s and 70s, the version sung by Barry McGuire is probably the most well-known, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1965.
6. What Iron Maiden song details a possible result of rising global tensions and nuclear war forced upon us by governments unwilling to compromise?

Answer: 2 Minutes To Midnight

The song title refers to the "Doomsday Clock" maintained by the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists. In 1953, the nuclear arms race between the US and USSR prompted the clock to be set at two minutes to midnight, with midnight itself being the start of a nuclear war.

After years of moving the time farther from midnight, in 2018 the clock was once again set to two minutes to midnight, the first time since 1953.
7. Vera Lynn is not known for writing songs about the end of the world. However that didn't stop her very popular song "We'll Meet Again" from being used in which 1964 dark comedy?

Answer: Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

(In)appropriately enough, the song begins playing at the end of the movie, (Spoiler!) during the nuclear explosion montage. Vera Lynn was a popular singer with the British armed forces during World War II and into the 1950s. She also holds the distinction of being the oldest person to have an album reach number one in the United Kingdom, at age 92.
8. Which 1969 Rolling Stones song, from the album "Let it Bleed", focuses on not just war, but also increased crime and societal breakdown?

Answer: Gimme Shelter

In 1998, a music video for the song was released. The video is focused on the breakdown and end of society, and not on war. The premise is two children's escape from a horribly broken home only to be abused by society as a whole.
9. Taking the end of the world not literally but figuratively, the song "'39" is about space travelers who leave on a year-long journey, and return to find that on Earth everybody is old and gray and many loved ones have died. Which famous rock band performs this sad tune?

Answer: Queen

The song reveals a metaphoric end of the world for the twenty space travelers. They have only memories of many people who grew old and died while they were on their voyage and now have to live their lives without anybody they cared about.
10. Billy Joel made a 1976 song about the destruction of his hometown. Partly titled "Miami 2017", what is the rest of the title (found in parentheses)?

Answer: Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway

The song was inspired by New York's financial troubles during the 1970s, nearly going bankrupt. The "Miami 2017" part refers to where and when the person in the song is retelling the story of how New York City was destroyed.
