Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Down comes him on sticks but then he kicks like a horse...' This line is from which song?

Answer: Grounds for Divorce

One of Elbow's best known songs, 'Grounds for Divorce' was the first release from their Mercury Prize winning album 'The Seldom Seen Kid'. The song has been featured in many films and television adverts, and it won the band an Ivor Novello award for Best Contemporary Song.
2. 'Been climbing trees, I've skinned my knees - My hands are black, the sun is going down.' Identify this song.

Answer: Scattered Black and Whites

My personal favourite and perennial set closer of Elbow's live sets, 'Scattered Black and Whites' tells the emotional story of a young boy's memories of older relatives and family life as a child. The song was never released as a single, but is the closing track of their debut album 'Asleep in the Back'. This album was also nominated for the Mercury Prize.
3. 'Deep in the rain of sparks behind his brow, is a part replayed from a perfect day.' Which song has this lyric?

Answer: Switching Off

This is another beautiful song. 'Switching Off' is one of only two Elbow songs to have been chosen as a track on Desert Island Discs. It was chosen by Velvet Underground founder John Cale in 2004. The song was featured on the album 'Cast of Thousands', released in 2003. It was released as a double A sided single along with 'Grace Under Pressure'.
4. 'The streets are full of Goths and Greeks, I haven't seen my mum for weeks...' Name this song.

Answer: Station Approach

'Station Approach' was an album track from Elbow's entirely self-produced third studio album 'Leaders of the Free World'. Released in Britain in 2005, it was, unfortunately, Elbow's least commercially successful album.
5. 'You are the only thing in any room you're ever in, I'm stubborn, selfish and too old...' Choose the correct song.

Answer: Starlings

The opening track from The Seldom Seen Kid sees Guy Garvey in reflective form about a former girlfriend. Apparently Garvey wrote these beautiful, if slightly cliched lyrics, in about an hour.
6. '"I'm tired" I said, "You always look tired" she said...' What song has this lyric?

Answer: Fugitive Motel

A single from 'Cast of Thousands', 'Fugitive Motel' is another of my favourite Elbow tracks. Elbow was originally called Mr Soft but is now named after a line in BBC TV drama 'The Singing Detective' in which Elbow is said to be the most sensuous word in the English language.
7. 'Well, did you ever trust your noble dreams and gentle expectations to the mercy of the night?' Pick the song with these lyrics.

Answer: The Night Will Always Win

'The Night Will Always Win' is a track from Elbow's album 'Build a Rocket Boys!' The song was written in memory of Garvey's good friend Bryan Glancy who sadly died in 2006. Glancy was also reputedly the subject of the track 'Friend of Ours' and was nicknamed 'The Seldom Seen Kid', the title of one of Elbow's most successful albums.
8. 'The ticker-tape tangles my feet, as I search for a face that I know...' Which song is this?

Answer: The Loneliness of a Tower Crane Driver

Another stunning track from 'The Seldom Seen Kid', 'The Loneliness of a Tower Crane Driver' was never released as a single. This song regularly makes its way onto Elbow's live set lists.
9. 'And nothing to be proud of...And nothing to regret...' This line is from what song?

Answer: Jesus Is a Rochdale Girl

A bizarrely unsentimental acoustic track about, perhaps, mediocrity and not fulfilling life's ambitions, 'Jesus Is a Rochdale Girl', from 'Build a Rocket Boys' is a song to which many of us can relate. The great line, 'A thousand boxes left to tick...', will probably ring a bell with many of us.
10. 'It's silly wrong but vivid right...' Name the song.

Answer: One Day Like This

This is by far one of Elbow's most famous single tracks and the one which shot them, belatedly, to stardom. 'One Day Like This' has been used on countless television shows, adverts and films and is a popular wedding song. It won Elbow another Ivor Novello award for Best Song.
