Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What record label did Hopsin sign with before he created Funk Volume with Dame Ritter?

Answer: Ruthless Records

Ruthless Records is owned by Eazy-E's wife after Eazy-E passed away from AIDS in 1995. It was a toxic relationship and Hopsin's contract prevented him from going on tour or releasing merchandise. Hopsin created Funk Volume in 2009. Hopsin left Funk Volume in January 2016 citing differences with Dame Ritter.
2. Which British rapper, whose name resembles that of a Norse god, retired from the rap game in 2012 and became a political activist?

Answer: Lowkey

Born in England of Iraqi parents, Lowkey has always had controversial, politically-based lyrics in his music. His biggest hit was "Long Live Palestine" (2009). A 2009 tour saw him perform fund raising shows in Palestinian refugee camps, which resulted in his arrest by Israeli police.

In 2012 he gave up music but continued his activism, including the Palestine Solidarity Movement and the Stop the War Coalition.
3. Which Italian-born front man of Jedi Mind Tricks and Army of the Pharaohs takes his name from a Rhode Island Boxer?

Answer: Vinnie Paz

Before he changed his stage name to Vinnie Paz, in tribute to boxer Vinnie Pazienza, Paz was known by the name Ikon the Verbal Hologram. Some of his songs are "Cheesesteaks", "End of Days" and "Keep Movin' On".
4. This Kansas City rapper and co-founder of Strange Music made the Forbes' Hip Hop's Top Earners list in 2013, 2014 and 2015. Who is he?

Answer: Tech N9ne

Aaron Yates' (aka Tech N9ne) financial success is partly due to his work ethic, and the number of shows he performs. The fact that he (with partner Travis O'Guin) own his own record label and production company, Strange Music (founded in 1999), also allows him to keep a bigger amount of the gross from his touring and recording.
5. Which Cleveland Rapper, known for his Lace Up movement, was the first rapper to win at the Apollo Talent Show (2009)?

Answer: Machine Gun Kelly

MGK's (Machine Gun Kelly) expression Lace Up has made it into the Urban Dictionary and is defined as a metaphor or mantra for being prepared for whatever life brings.
He is probably best known for "100 Words and Running", a viral YouTube video before he was signed to any label. His hits include "Wild Boy" (2012) and "'Til I Die" (2015).
6. Where do rap/hip hop group Swollen Members (formed in 1992), fronted by Madchild, hail from?

Answer: Vancouver, B.C.

Canadian frontman Madchild formed his own label, Battleaxe Records, which is distributed by Fat Beats in New York. In Swollen Members' song "Fuel Injected" (2001), the band stated "we own the label, never get dropped."
7. Which Alabama rapper/hip hop artist has a picture of Johnny Cash tattooed on the side of his head?

Answer: Yelawolf

Yelawolf signed to Shady Records (owned by Eminem) in 2011. He is probably best known for his hit "'Till It's Gone" (2015. Other hits include "Pop the Trunk" (2010), "American You" (2015) and "Catfish Billy" (2013").
The Johnny Cash tattoo is in tribute to the late country singer whom he has always admired. The tattoo depicts Johnny Cash and June Carter which he says reflects on his own relationship with singer Fefe Dobson.
8. Which hip hop artist with a history of alcohol and cough syrup abuse, made his mark when he sobered up and became a proponent of sobriety with his hit song "Otherside" (2010)?

Answer: Macklemore

Macklemore was addicted to Lean, a codeine-based cough syrup that is mixed with Jolly Rancher candies and water. After intervention from his father he admitted himself into rehab. A brief relapse in 2011 had him "Starting Over" (2012), a song in which he dealt with his relapse. In the song he said "If I can be an example of getting sober, then I can be an example of starting over".
9. Rapper Childish Gambino, probably best known for "Sweatpants" (2014), has appeared in what college-based sitcom?

Answer: Community

Gambino (Donald Glover) has had small roles in many movies and television shows including "The Martian" (2015), "Magic Mike XXL" (2015), "The Muppets" (2011) and "Ultimate Spiderman" (2015). In "Community" (2009), he played Troy, a former high school big fish learning to be a little fish in a big pond.
10. Which South African rap duo's, known for "I Fink U Freeky" (2012) name is Afrikaans for "The Answer"?

Answer: Die Antwoord

Formed by individual rappers Ninja and Yolandi Vi$$er in 2008 in Cape Town, South Africa. DJ Hi-Tek provides the strong backbeats for the duo.
In 2015 they released the movie "Chappie". A movie is about a robot cop that becomes sentient and sees the rappers as its parents. Their music provided the soundtrack for the film.
