Answer: Only the Lonely

Roy Orbison was best known for his ballads of love and of course his dark sunglasses. Contrary to popular belief, he was not blind. He wore his sunglasses because he couldn't find his real glasses during one concert. After the success he had wearing them, it became his trademark.
2. "Daddy's Home" was this groups only hit, hitting the charts at #2 in May, 1961. Who was this group?

Answer: Shep and the Limelites

The Dovells also had a #2 hit in 1961. It was called "Bristol Stomp".
3. Inspired by the dance craze that was going on in 1962, the #2 hit "Mashed Potato Time" was recorded by which artist?

Answer: Dee Dee Sharp

The Mashed Potato was a dance very closely resembling The Twist. It was a pretty easy dance, requiring three steps. Dee Dee Sharp followed this song up with "Gravy (For My Mashed Potatoes)" later on in the year.
4. "Wipe Out" may be one of the best known #2 songs. Who was the band who recorded this song?

Answer: The Surfaris

Recorded as a "B" side song to the song "Surfer Joe", this song is considered to be the Surfers' anthem. The beginning maniacal laughter followed by the spoken words "Wipe Out" was actually done by the band's manager, Dale Smallen.
5. 1964 was the year of the British invasion of the United States with the emergence of the Beatles. Which one of these songs by the Beatles only made it to #2?

Answer: Twist and Shout

"Twist and Shout" was one of the first songs, if not the first song, that the Beatles released in America. However, the Beatles were not the first ones to record this song. That distinction goes to the Isley Brothers, who recorded it in 1962 and also took it to #2.
6. This band had two #2s in 1965 with "Count Me In" and "Save Your Heart For Me". Who was this band?

Answer: Gary Lewis and the Playboys

Gary Lewis, whose father is the famous comedian Jerry Lewis, and his band first song actually was a #1. "This Diamond Ring" was the song that propelled them into stardom in early 1965. However, by the time 1965 had ended, only two of the five band members that started the group remained.
7. This bands biggest hit was "A Groovy Kind of Love." The song had reached #2 in 1966. Which band was it?

Phil Collins made a cover of this song in 1988 for the movie "Buster." His version made #1 on both the US and the UK top 40 at the same time.
8. "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" was released twice. The first release was in 1967 and went to #2. Who sung this version?

Answer: Gladys Knight and the Pips

In 1968, Marvin Gaye took the song to the #1 position, and is probably the most remembered version of the song. In 1970, Creedence Clearwater Revival made an extended version of the song.
9. In 1968, Dionne Warwick performed a song for a movie. The song made it to the #2 spot. Which movie was this song for?

Answer: Valley of the Dolls

"Valley of the Dolls" was released in 1967. However, the theme for the movie wasn't a hit until 1968. The movie starred Barbara Parkins, Sharon Tate, and Patty Duke.
10. Creedence Clearwater Revival had many #2s in 1969. Which one of these songs was not a #2?

Answer: Down on the Corner

"Down on the Corner" actually only made it as high as #3. Believe it or not, the band never had a #1 hit. All they could manage was #2s

Just for information, the songs placements in this quiz was looked at through www.gramble.com/music/top40.html. It was very instrumental in helping me find out which songs were #2 songs in the 1960's.
