Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Artist: Empyrium Album: "Weyland" Portion of lyrics: "Welch gramvoll Pein verwies mich meinen Pfaden als morgendunstge Schwaden noch ruhten im verschneiten Hain. In weit erstarrter Heide lang schwand die alte Leite" This song is?

Answer: Heidestimmung: Fortgang

A beautiful song, "Heidestimmung: Fortgang" is almost entirely acoustic, though with a very light percussive undertone. The lyrics are entirely in German, and the portion above reads:
"He referred me full of pain to my path, as snowy clouds still rested upon the forest. In much solidified Heide, long vanished..."

This is an example of folk, or atmospheric folk.
2. Artist: Ulver Album: "Kveldssanger" The title, translated into English, means "High mountains." What is this song?

Answer: Høyfjeldsbilde

Yes, "Høyfjeldsbilde" roughly means "high mountains," and it's a fitting name for this haunting melody. Again, we find ourselves with a folk based acoustic piece, though this one is strictly so, and only a single guitar is used for the entirety of the piece. A masterpiece, and a personal favorite.

3. Artist: Darkwood Instrumentation: acoustic, with clean vocals and occasional orchestral strings. Portion of lyrics: "Tiefes Schweigen Kälte, Schnee und Dunkelheit Fernes Leuchten Zerreisst der Seelen Einsamkeit Ostenfeld Sturmgeweihtes Land Ostenfeld Sturmgeweihtes Land" What is the song?

Answer: Ostenfeld

I do hope you got this one, as the title is in the lyrics. It's "Ostenfeld", yet another beautiful acoustic creation, this time by the little known, but excellent band Darkwood. They too sing their lyrics primarily in German. (It seems my media player is trying to tell me something. Three acoustic songs in a row...)

The lyrics provided are:
"Deep silence cold
snow and darkness
distant lights burst
by the souls of loneliness

Storm
Sacred land
Storm
sacred land"

4. This song is a bit more mainstream. Or, at least, the band that plays it is. Some refer to this band as the creator of contemporary metal, others call them the greatest thrash band of the 80s and 90s. To be sure, they have achieved the status as one of the four main thrash bands of all time. This song, released in August 1987, and on the "Garage Days Revisited" album, was in fact originally performed by Holocaust. What is this song?

Answer: The Small Hours

It is "The Small Hours," by no other than Metallica. The song was covered by Metallica in 1987, but what most don't seem to know is that it was originally written by Holocaust in 1983.

5. Ah, my favorite band. Origin, Oregon, United States Album: "Pale Folklore" Portion of lyrics: "As dark as the winter, as black as her grim mask of death As cold as her sorrow, her ivory tears" What might this song be?

Answer: "Hallways of Enchanted Ebony" by Agalloch

This would be Agalloch, a band from Oregon that truly happens to defy stylistic definition. Though they often employ black metal vocals, they tend to distort even this style of vocalization, resulting in a raspy, whispery kind of sound that is at once chilling and haunting. They also use various folk instruments, and play in a highly folk metal influenced manner. Yet, to classify them as folk metal would be unjust, and truly it is difficult to believe a band of this depth emerged where it did.

6. Artist: Manowar This song opens with a particularly good piano solo and is from th "Louder than Hell album on which it appears. Can you guess the song?

Answer: Courage

The song is "Courage", and the album that it is on derives it's name from this song. In this piece, the astounding vocals can truly be showcased, and are done so quite impressively. A point for those who argue metal produces vocalists of considerable skill.

7. Artist: Fields of the Nephilim Album: "Dawnrazor" Portion of lyrics: "Come down, right upon the train In a swirling pool of blood and brains Well, that's fate, my mind is made Be a woman a child, a child's masquerade" What might this song be?

Answer: Dust

This is one of the bands on my playlist that I know the least about. They are a gothic rock band from Hertfordshire, England, and though their generalization within a particular genre would seem to dictate their style, I've found that they have a good bit of folk influence as well. They are also one of the inspirations for the band Agalloch, which is really why they're on my list of bands that I've acquired over the years.

8. Artist: Dimmu Borgir Album: "Spiritual Black Dimension" Portion of lyrics: "Unleash the tempted beast, raised your horns in pridefull blasphemy I'll be your guide into the glorious darkness, and enchant you like a taste of sin Unleash the tempted beast, chant theron in words of blazing scorn Grant me my dark desires, strengthened through the power of Satan" What is this?

Answer: The Blazing Monoliths Of Defiance

Ah, we come to a slightly heavier song. This is black metal, or, in many spheres, Satanic metal. This song, and this band, certainly are of the Satanic variety. That being said, Dimmu Borgir has become rather more mainstream and publicized than a black metal band ought to in my opinion. But, my opinion is moot. This is still a rather good song, assuming you have the stomach for the harsh kind of metal.

9. Origin: Bolivia Album: "10 años" This highly traditional song, written in 1986, uses South American folk instrumentation, and lacks vocals altogether. However, it is still distinctly Latin American. What might this song be?

Answer: Sicusmanta

This was a tough one, but "Sicusmanta" is the only song off of the "10 años" album by Savia Andina, a Latin American band that has been often referred to as the most prevalent South American folk group of all. Starting in the early 70s, Savia Andina emphasized the folk music of Latin America, and subsequently achieved three gold albums and toured Europe extensively for the next 35 years.
10. Artist: Darkwood Album: "Flammende Welt" Hint: Grundstück des Reichtums; contrasted with sterling, a plan forever recurring. What might this song be?

Answer: Plot of Gold

Darkwood returns, this time with a song titled Plot of Gold." (By the way, if you know German, the hint was the title, with gold and wealth switched.) It's another fantastic acoustic piece.
11. Artist: Berzum Album: "Det Som Engang Var" If you're expecting a song with lyrics, or even with instruments, this one will surprise you. I can't help but think of a sea of acid when I hear this...

Answer: Den Onde Kysten

Litterally translated, this piece is called "The evil coast," and is in fact a transitional piece, intended to be heard when one is listening to the album in it's entirety from front to back. It is simply the sound of cold, icy waves breaking on a shore, though, if you listen , you can hear the distant sound of an ethereal music underneath the frigidity of the sea.

12. Artist: 3rd and the Mortal Album: "Painting On Glass" It's a song that addresses both the day and the night, and the forever advancing line of daybreak.

Answer: Horizons

3rd and the Mortal can be considered an acoustic band, but, it's more of an industrialized form of dark ambient, with one of the most beautiful and haunting female vocalists I have ever encountered. This song, "Horizons," is an excellent example of their work.

13. Artist: Nest Album: "Trail Of The Unwary" This song, like most of Nest's pieces, is lyricless, yet it is characteristic because of the long, drawn-out orchestral string notes at it's beginning. Not only do these notes strike a chord in any human heart, they are also unique to the album. What might this song be?

Answer: Kontio

It is "Kontio," a personal favorite of mine, and a melancholy, yet entrancing piece to listen to on a winter night. Nest, the band in question, is a true example of neofolk, and is my favorite within this genre.

14. Another heavy piece. Artist: Impaled Nazarene Album: "Latex Cult" Portion of Lyrics:  "No niin Kurkkaamme perseeseen Ja pohjoisesta tuulee Ja viisikoipinen muna ulvoo" What is this?

Answer: Delirium Tremens

Another black metal act, Impaled Nazarene can be said to have some of the more, profane song names and lyrics. I chose to omit certain song names as answer choices, for fear of violating Funtrivia guidelines. Nonetheless, if you enjoy this kind of musical release from time to time as I do, then they are certainly worth investigating.

15. Last one! Artist: Tyr Album: "Eric the Red" This song was originally an Irish tune, and has been covered by many a group, including The Pogues. Can you guess it?

Answer: The Wild Rover

This may be one of the best songs of all time, and, when performed by Tyr, is truly impressive. It has been an Irish traditional song for many years, and only now has it gained a metal skin. But, you have to love it.
