Spencer Davis, the founder of the group, was born in Wales. Every day, after school, I rode some of my friends home in my car. We would always go by the girls school down the street from us and we would pass by the girls waiting for the bus to take them home. We always made it a point to say hello to them. Well maybe not always as you might think. I guess it was our way of flirting with them.

Spencer Davis gave up his job as a teacher to form this band. Usually I gave a ride to my pals Bald Headed Lenny, Big Nose Al and Ba Ba Bob. 'Gimme Some Lovin' was with out a doubt Lenny's favorite song. We had to make sure that it was playing as loudly as it could be played when we passed by the girls. Lenny would stand up in my car and try to get all of the girls attention by acting like a nut while singing this song.

Spencer Davis formed this group in 1963. One day, while we were stopped at the traffic light, Lenny decided to say hello to the girls by standing up and mooning them! Seeing what he was doing I hit the gas and nearly threw him out of my convertable. I had the top down and Lenny fell out onto the trunk with his pants down around his knees. We had a heck of a time pulling him back in because I wasn't stopping. I just wanted to get out of there.

Did you know that Steve Windwood's brother was in this group? We avoided going passed the girls for about three days. I figured that would give them time to calm down from Lenny's mooning. The other ways that we took home seemed to be so boring. Besides that, they were much longer. I had run into some of the girls that experienced the mooning and they all said that they found it to have been funny. I guessed that seeing Lenny hanging onto my car half naked might well have been pretty funny to see. Little did I know, but it was a set up.

Steve's brother's name is Muff Windwood. As we got close to the girls' bus stop Lenny had me play this song as loudly as I could. I put in the tape and when I looked in the rear view mirror I noticed Lenny putting on a Lone Ranger type mask. Before I could ask him what he was up to he stood up and mooned the girls again.

But this time I was stuck in traffic and from out of nowhere my car was surrounded by the Catholic Nuns that taught at the girls' school! Apparently they were just waiting for us to come by to catch us. We were so busted! They made Big Nose Al and Ba Ba Bob to get out of my car and for me and Lenny to report to the Mother Superior's office back at the girls' school. I might add that, they were mad as _ _ ll at us.

Steve Winwood was 17 years old when this song was recorded. On the way to the girls' school I asked Lenny why he was wearing a Lone Ranger mask. He said that he didn't want anyone to be able to say that it was him that mooned the girls. I blew my top at him. I asked him just how many bald 17 year old kids are there in the world let alone our city.

Then there was the fact that there was only one white Dodge convertible at our school not to mention we KNEW just about every girl at the bus stop! What an idiot and he was still wearing that stupid mask!

'Gimme Some Lovin' was the first song from the SDG to go to the top ten. You know you are in trouble, at my age, when the conversation begins with, 'now son.' Her lips never seemed to move as she explained that, since I was in control of the car, that it was my duty to control the people in my car. I tried to explain that even she could not control Lenny but she didn't want to hear about that. My punishment was to go and collect 1000 cigarette butts! I was to report back to her with my 1000 butts or, she was going to tell COACH on me. Oh MY God! I would rather do anything then to be reported to COACH! Coach just loved to make you run laps around the football field. I knew that I was looking at about a million laps if I didn't go and find the butts.

SDG toured with the Stones and The Who during the 60's. When I came out of the office there sat Lenny still wearing that goofy mask. I made him take it off. His punishment was to collect only 500 butts. I decided not to be mad at Lenny so when he requested 'Gimme Some Lovin' I had to play it and play it loudly. Except we changed the words to 'Gimme Some Cigarette Butts'.

Did you know that Steve Winwood was a member of Traffic? The next day I went to a local park and started collecting cigarette butts. People were really staring at me. I guess they must have thought I was a nut case. About noon Lenny showed up with Big Nose Al. Compared to me he had a pretty good size bag of butts. To this day I don't know why I ever let him convince me that the Nuns would never count the butts that we truned into them.

At the time his suggestion of stuffing in some leaves and twigs at the bottom of the bag and then the butts on top seemed like a good idea. So that is exactly what I did.

Steve Winwood was kicked out of school before he was 16 years old. On Monday, Lenny and I reported to Old Sour Puss. Lenny went into the office first. When he came out he was all smiles. He gave me the 'thumbs up' sign. But, I wasn't so lucky. I watched in horror as Old Sour Puss dumped my bag of trash on her desk.

She counted every single cigarette butt. I only had 160! I was dead meat. I can not remember exactly what she said but I can tell you she wasn't very pleased with me. She took my 160 butts and threw them away and told me that I had exactly 24 hours to come up with 1000 or, Coach would receive a call from her.

Steve joined with Eric Clapton to form Blind Faith. I could not believe that OSP actually counted my stash. Lenny said that she did not count his and when I asked him why he confessed to being a snitch. He said, "I told her that she did not have to count mine because I had 500 but she had better count yours because you were way short of 1000." He went on to say that he used that trick to keep her from counting his butts because he was also short of his 500. I am not sure how he got home that day. I left him standing at the bus stop where the 'mooning' occurred.

As I pulled away I cranked up The Spencer Davis Group.

On my way home I had to stop at the grocery store. As I was going in I noticed hundreds of cigarette butts in an ash can. Eureka! I ran inside and got a big brown bag and started collecting all of them. As my luck would have it my girlfriend's father just happened to be out of milk.

He just stood there shaking his head saying, "Kabel, you are one strange kid. I don't know why I let you date my ONLY daughter." I did not care, I was on a mission.

I ran from grocery store to grocery store until I finally collected over 1000 butts. I wasn't taking any chances of being short on the count. I was all proud of myself when I finally got home but, that didn't last for long. It seems that I completely forgot to pick up the food for our supper. I tried to explain but it just didn't come out right. I had to do the dishes for another 30 days.

Well, Old Sour Puss did in fact count my cigarette butts. I had 1017! I was off the 'hook'. I finally forgave Bald Headed Lenny for being a snitch and he was back in my car pool the next day. I tried to explain to my girlfriend's father but he would only shake his head and tell me what a strange kid I was. Lenny never 'mooned' the girls again.

When we passed by them we just waved and yelled hello. However, Lenny wasn't done with his mooning. Someday I will have to tell you what happened when he mooned the police! What a nut he was!
