Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The band The Traveling Wilburys was formed almost as a joke in order to make a B-side to a George Harrison single. Which one?

Answer: This Is Love

George wanted to record a B-side to his Warner Brothers' single 'This Is Love'. His co-writer, Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison went round to Bob Dylan's Malibu studio to record the track. George had left his guitar at Tom Petty's house, so the Traveling Wilburys (American spelling suggested by Jeff Lynne as the Americans outnumbered the Brits) were born.

The resulting track, 'Handle With Care' was considered far too good to be a B-side filler, so was released as a single, getting to number 21 in the UK singles and number 2 in the US Rock charts.

They recorded their first album in a mere 10 days in May 1988. The wrong answers are all George Harrison singles.
2. What was the Traveling Wilburys second album called?

Answer: Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3

'Traveling Wilburys Vol.1' was followed by 'Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3' in 1980. The reason for this was given as "George being George". I made up all the wrong answers. In 2007 a box set, 'The Traveling Wilburys Collection', containing both albums and a DVD, was released. It went straight to number one in the UK, and also charted at number 9 in the US Billboard 200.
3. Which member of the original lineup was not on the second album?

Answer: Roy Orbison

Roy Orbison sadly died in December 1988, so was not on the second album. The video for the Vol.1 song 'End of the Line', shows a rocking chair and Roy Orbison's guitar as a tribute over his vocals.
4. In 1990, an album was released for the Romanian Angel Appeal, to benefit orphans of that country. What single, also the name of the album, did The Traveling Wilburys record for it?

Answer: Nobody's Child

All the named tracks come from the album. 'With a Little Help from my Friends' (also released as a single) was recorded by another former Beatle, Ringo Starr, and his 'All-Starr Band' (consisting of Ringo, Joe Walsh, Nils Lofgren, Billy Preston, Dr. John, Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, Jim Keltner, Clarence Clemons and Ringo's son Zak Starkey). 'Homeward Bound' was George Harrison (again!) and Paul Simon and 'Medicine Man' was Elton John.
5. As part of the joke, The Traveling Wilburys all assumed identities as the fictitious sons of the equally fictitious Charles Truscott Wilbury, Sr. Which artist was Lucky Wilbury on the first album and Boo Wilbury on the second?

Answer: Bob Dylan

Tom Petty was Charlie T. Wilbury Jr. on the first album and Muddy Wilbury on the second, George Harrison was Nelson Wilbury and Spike Wilbury and Jeff Lynne was Otis Wilbury and Clayton Wilbury.
6. The Traveling Wilburys all had musical lives before the group was formed. Which was not a group associated with a member of the The Traveling Wilburys?

Answer: Genesis

Jeff Lynne was leader of the Electric Light Orchestra, Tom Petty's group was the Heartbreakers and George Harrison was lead guitarist with The Beatles. Genesis was an English rock band whose original lineup was Peter Gabriel, Anthony Phillips, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and Chris Stewart. Phil Collins also played drums with Genesis.
7. What name was first suggested for The Traveling Wilburys?

Answer: The Trembling Wilburys

The original suggestion was that they should be called The Trembling Wlburys, but Jeff Lynne came up with the name they eventually became.
8. Three singles were released from The Traveling Wilburys' second album. Which was not one of them?

Answer: Where Were You Last Night?

Only three singles were released from the second album. In the US, 'She's My Baby' was the highest charting single, reaching number 2 in the US Rock chart. Interestingly, the Wilbury's second album attained its highest position in the Norwegian chart, reaching number 3, compared with number 11 in the US and number 14 in the UK. 'Where Were You Last Night?' was on the second album, but not released as a single.
9. Which rock guitarist played lead guitar on the track 'She's My Baby' from The Traveling Wilburys' second album?

Answer: Gary Moore

Although all the wrong answers would no doubt have done a great job, the selected one was Gary Moore. Interestingly, Eric Clapton and George Harrison were both married to the same woman, Pattie Boyd.
10. Which relative of The Traveling Wilburys was credited with overdubs on the previously unreleased tracks 'Maxine' and 'Like A Ship' on The Traveling Wilburys Collection, under the pseudonym, Ayrton Wilbury?

Answer: Dhani Harrison

Dhani Harrison, who looks eerily like his late father, is also a musician. His name comes from two notes on the Indian music scale.
