The band were originally a four piece with Baria Qureshi on keyboard and guitar. Qureshi left the band in 2009, due to exhaustion according to her, although Jamie Smith has said it wasn't Qureshi's decision as the rest of the band decided she was no longer required.

Smith, also commonly known as Jamie xx, released his solo album, "In Colour" in 2015, having previously released a collaboration album between himself and Gil Scott-Heron in 2011. "In Colour" featured guest vocals from fellow xx members Romy Madley-Croft and Oliver Sim as well as artists such as Young Thug and Popcaan.

The album was well received by fans and critics alike, being nominated for both a Mercury and a Grammy.

Exalted company indeed for the band, as the soundtrack to the movie also featured artists such as Jay Z, will.i.am, Jack White and Beyonce. The band were originally going to donate an existing track for the film, but after seeing the scene for which their music was to be used, wrote a new song to capture the mood of the scene.
