Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the better known stage name of the singer/songwriter Declan Patrick MacManus?

Answer: Elvis Costello

Elvis Costello was born in Liverpool England on 25 August 1954. On signing his first record deal his manager suggested a name change and Elvis Costello was born. His father, a jazz trumpeter, used the stage name Costello so it was easy to continue that tradition and the Elvis of course came from Elvis Presley.
2. In which country did Blondie first experience commercial success?

Answer: Australia

Apparently this success was as a result of an error (or was it?) by Countdown presenter Molly (Ian) Meldrum who played the B-side of their release 'X-pretender'. The song that he played instead was 'In the Flesh' and it made it to number two in the Australian singles charts in 1977.
3. Which keyboardist has been with Duran Duran since they formed in 1978?

Answer: Nick Rhodes

John Taylor and Nick Rhodes formed Duran Duran in 1978 in Birmingham, England. Simon Le Bon was the band's third attempt at finding a lead singer and joined in 1980. John Taylor, the band's bass guitarist, stepped away from the band in 1998 and only rejoined in 2001. Roger Taylor, the band's drummer, joined in 1979, left in 1986 and then rejoined in 2001.
4. Gordon Sumner, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland are the three members of which band?

Answer: The Police

Whilst all these bands have three members, only The Police features the line-up of Sumner, Summers and Copeland. Of course Sumner is better known by his stage name of Sting. The Police are also the only one of the four bands that can be considered to be part of the New Wave pantheon. Nirvana IS 'grunge'; Green Day is more closely aligned with punk; and Cream was part of the rock music scene of the 1960s.
5. Most of us know that the first music video played on MTV was 'Video Killed the Radio Star' by English New Wave band The Buggles. But which female singer's music video 'You Better Run' was the second?

Answer: Pat Benatar

MTV (Music Television) was launched on 1 August 1981. The first song played was a deliberate nod to how a cable show like MTV would shape the future of the music industry. And Pat Benatar's song was also a carefully chosen shot across the bows of the record industry. MTV played a major role in promoting the popularity of New Wave music during the 1980s.
6. The title of this quiz 'This is Not My Beautiful Wife' is from which song by Talking Heads?

Answer: Once in a Lifetime

'Once in a Lifetime' is the lead single from Talking Heads fourth album 'Remain in Light' released in 1980. Whilst some have suggested that the song is about existential crisis, David Byrne, lead singer and writer of the lyrics, said the song was about the unconscious. "We operate half-awake or on autopilot and end up, whatever, with a house and family and job and everything else, and we haven't really stopped to ask ourselves, 'How did I get here?' ('Once in a Lifetime' National Public Radio broadcast, March 27, 2000: sourced from Wikipedia)
7. The B-52s' iconic hit 'Loveshack' made it to number one in three countries. Which of these wasn't one of them?

Answer: Germany

'Loveshack' was released in 1989 and raced away to become a number one hit in Australia, Ireland and New Zealand. It charted at number two in the UK and number three in the USA. Apparently it didn't appeal to the German sensibility as it did not feature at all on their top singles chart.

Another song by The B-52s' '(Meet) The Flintstones' had more success and came in at number nine in Germany.
8. What band were Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox in before they decided to perform as a duo?

Answer: The Tourists

Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox are perhaps better known as Eurythmics. The Tourists was formed in 1976 but broke up in 1980. The Tourists had commercial success with a cover of Dusty Springfield's 'I Only Want to Be with You' and 'So Good to Be Back Home Again', both of which made it into the top ten in the UK.

After the break up of The Tourists in 1980, Lennox and Stewart formed Eurythmics. According to Stewart he and Lennox were in Wagga Wagga in Australia when they decided to perform as a duo and the rest is music history.
9. The Cars won MTV's Video of the Year in 1984. Which of their songs garnered this award?

Answer: You Might Think

As Molly (Ian) Meldurm, the presenter of the Australian TV music show 'Countown' would say 'Do yourself a favour and watch this'. It is a great clip and one of the first to use computer generated graphics. It features Ric Ocasek, the band's lead singer, and model Susan Gallagher with graphics being cleverly used to portray Ocasek in a range of encounters with Gallagher including a take on the Empire Building scene from King Kong.
10. According to her book 'Reckless: My Life as a Pretender', Chrissie Hynde, lead singer of The Pretenders, nearly married which 'musician'?

Answer: Sid Vicious

Chrissy Hynde moved to England in 1973 and worked at a range of jobs before ending up working for Malcolm McLaren's and Vivian Westwood's clothing store SEX. She was apparently desperate to keep her work permit and originally approached Johnny Rotten to marry her but he subsequently pulled out. Sid Vicious then volunteered but when they turned up at the Registry Office it was closed and they couldn't come back the next day because Sid was due in court. Hynde has also been involved with a number of other musicians including Ray Davies, lead singer of The Kinks (they have a daughter).

She also married Jim Kerr, lead singer of Simple Minds in 1984 but they divorced in 1990.
