Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This Peter was a part of the band Chicago.

Answer: Cetera

The band Chicago started in 1967 and called themselves "The Big Thing." They originally consisted of baritone vocals, keyboards, sax, drums, and guitar. They realized that they needed a tenor and a bass player, so they invited Peter Cetera to join the band.

When they saw that they were actually successful, they decided to move to Los Angeles and changed their name to the "Chicago Transit Authority", which was later reduced to just "Chicago." They went on to produce many studio albums. Bolstered by the band's great success, Peter Cetera decided to quit Chicago to go out on a solo career in 1985.
2. This Peter was born in England.

Answer: Gabriel

Peter Gabriel was born in Chobham, Surrey, England. He got his love for music from his mother, Edith, who was a musician. His father, Ralph, was an electrical engineer. Already at a young age, Peter Gabriel was noticed for his musical ability in singing, and he learned piano and drums in addition. Still in high school, he started a band called Garden Wall and they performed successfully at school. Though the band broke up about two years later, parts of Garden Wall reformed with new additions to great success.

Peter Tosh was born in Grange Hill, Jamaica. Peter Cetera was born in Chicago, Illinois, while Peter Yarrow was born in New York City, New York.
3. This Peter marched with Martin Luther King Jr. at Selma and in Washington DC.

Answer: Yarrow

While all of these Peters have had causes close to their heart, Peter Yarrow stood up for what he believed in, equal rights for all. He marched with Martin Luther King Jr. both at Selma, Alabama, as well as in Washington DC. He stated that his religion, Judaism, was the root of his activism, and he felt strongly about the ideals expressed by Dr. King.

In Washington, he performed "Blowin' in the Wind" with his trio and it caught on as one of the iconic songs of the civil rights movement.
4. This Peter was the first to pass away.

Answer: Tosh

Of the four, Peter Tosh was not the oldest. He was born in 1942 in Washington DC, and was older than Peter Gabriel, but younger than Peters Yarrow and Cetera, the latter by only about a month. After a successful music career which featured collaborations with artists in the United States as well as in Jamaica, he returned to his home in Kingston, Jamaica, in September of 1987.

He was accosted by three men who attempted to shake him down for money, which he did not have at his house. After torture and a hostage situation with others who visited the house, the men opened fire recklessly and two bullets hit Tosh in the head.

He and two others were murdered and others were injured. One of the gunmen turned himself in but the other two were never found. Peter Tosh was only 42 when he passed away.
5. This Peter was a founding member of the band Genesis.

Answer: Gabriel

Peter Gabriel was a founding member of the band Genesis, along with Tony Banks, Anthony Phillips, Chris Stewart, and Mike Rutherford. They all went to school together and formed a band, originally called Anon, that eventually turned into Genesis. Initially, the group didn't see much success. They cut an album and it didn't sell very well, and the group decided to continue with school.

After the five continued with their education, Phillips, Banks, Rutherford, and Gabriel decided to keep music as their career. Stewart had already been replaced by John Silver, but Silver left for the States to study there having been disappointed with the band's lack of success. He was replaced by John Mayhew. After two unsuccessful albums, Phillips quit and Mayhew was fired, and the band needed a drummer that didn't clash with the rest of them. They found Phil Collins, a drummer for Flaming Youth. A few months with guitarist Mick Barnard didn't pan out, and Mick Hackett was brought in and a third album was recorded. Success followed and Genesis took off, which probably prompted Peter Gabriel to want to pursue a solo career. He left the band at the end of 1975.
6. This Peter sang primarily folk music.

Answer: Yarrow

Peter Yarrow was the Peter in the band Peter Paul and Mary. Along with Noel Paul Stookey and Mary Travers, the three sang folk classics like "Puff, the Magic Dragon," "Leaving on a Jet Plane," and "I Dig Rock and Roll Music." Peter Yarrow also played acoustic guitar in the trio. They also achieved success with covers of "If I Had a Hammer" and "Blowin' in the Wind," two songs that had already been made popular by Pete Seeger and Bob Dylan respectively.

Peter Tosh was known primarily for reggae and played several instruments. Peter Cetera sang and played guitar mostly in the rock genre. That was also Peter Gabriel's genre, though he sang and played the keyboard and flute.
7. This Peter was closely associated with Bob Marley.

Answer: Tosh

When Peter Tosh was a young, up-and-coming musician, he met Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer, and the three started singing together. They got free vocal lessons from Joe Higgs who, apart from the real basics of singing, developed harmonies for the group and taught them how to find them independently.

After a brief hiatus, the three reunited in 1967 to form the Wailers, later known as Bob Marley and the Wailers when Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh left the group.
8. This Peter was inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Answer: Gabriel

Peter Gabriel was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the rest of the band Genesis in 2010. However, after he left the band in 1975, he embarked on a successful solo career, for which he was inducted in 2014. His eponymous debut album was first released in 1976 and was successful and featured the single "Solsbury Hill". His best album was probably "So," released in 1986. It featured hit singles like "Sledgehammer," "In Your Eyes," and "Big Time."

As a musician, Peter Gabriel is highly awarded. He has won a six Grammys through 2021. However, he is also known as a humanitarian who works closely with Amnesty International, and has been recognized as the Man of Peace in 2006.
9. This Peter has a distinctively high-pitched voice.

Answer: Cetera

Peter Cetera is one of those artists that is easy to identify if you were blindfolded and were played a segment of music. He apparently got this kind of voice when he broke his jaw in 1969 at a Dodgers game and had his mouth wired shut. He had to relearn how to sing in this fashion and the result was his very high voice.

After leaving Chicago (the band), Peter Cetera embarked on a solo career and his distinctive voice helped him reach success with singles like "Glory of Love," "Restless Heart," "One Good Woman," and "The Next Time I Fall," which he sang with with Amy Grant.
10. This Peter had the longest hair of the four.

Answer: Tosh

Peter Tosh was abandoned by his parents from a very young age and went from family member to family member growing up. Music saved him. He would watch musicians and memorize how they would hold their guitars and their fingering on the chords, and he would try to mimic them later.

He was also self-taught on the keyboard. Tosh became very involved in the Rastafari faith along with his band members, and this was why he did not cut his hair. Also, because of his faith, he suggested the band name 'the Wailers' because they were expressing their feelings and faith out loud by "wailing."
