Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Michael Andrews featuring Gary Jules took "Mad World" to the top of the charts in December 2003, but who had the original hit in 1982?

Answer: Tears For Fears

"Mad World" stopped UK rock band The Darkness from having the 2003 Christmas number one. Original artists Tears For Fears have done alright out of Gary Jules version, as the success of the song prompted their record company to re-issue the bands "Greatest Hits" album.
2. Shane Richie said "I'm Your Man" for the BBC's "Children In Need" charity, earning himself a top ten hit in the process. Which duo took that song to number one in 1985?

Answer: Wham!

Wham!, George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley, had 4 number one hits during their chart career. Former Butlin's Redcoat, and all round entertainer Shane Richie, is now better known as "Eastenders" character Alfie Moon.
3. Which old Kool And The Gang hit did Atomic Kitten cover in 2004?

Answer: "Ladies Night"

Atomic Kitten, who split up in February 2004, have also had hits with covers of "Eternal Flame" and "The Tide Is High". Former Atomic Kitten singer Kerry McFadden was crowned "Queen Of The Jungle" in the 2004 edition of hit TV show "I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here!".
4. "Jump (For My Love)" cried Girls Aloud in January 2004. Who made that request back in 1984?

Answer: Pointer Sisters

The Girls Aloud version is featured on the soundtrack of the "Love Actually" movie, starring Hugh Grant.
5. Westlife have made many cover versions, including "Mandy", a number one in January 2004. Which singer only made number 11 with the song in 1975?

Answer: Barry Manilow

Other Westlife cover versions include "I Have A Dream", "Against All Odds" and "Uptown Girl". The ever popular Barry Manilow was born Barry Pincus, and his hits include "Can't Smile Without You" and "Could It Be Magic".
6. New York outfit The Scissor Sisters took a cover of "Comfortably Numb" into the charts in 2004. Which world famous band orginally wrote and performed the song?

Answer: Pink Floyd

"Comfortably Numb" features on the Pink Floyd album "The Wall". Can I say that the Scissor Sisters are a new, cutting edge band? (Sorry, could not resist it)
7. Sixties classics often end up being reworked for a more modern sound. The Boogie Pimps entered the top 10 in early 2004 with a version of the ever popular "Somebody To Love". Who was responsible for the original version?

Answer: Jefferson Airplane

Oddly, "Somebody To Love" was never actually a UK hit single, although it's so well known that most people think it was. Jim Carrey did a version of the song in the "Cable Guy" movie. Although Queen did have a hit with a tune called "Somebody To Love", it is a different song.
8. LMC made it to the top of the UK charts with "Take Me To the Clouds Above". The song was actually a mixture of two previous hits - the lyrics of Whitney Houston's "How Will I Know", and a sample of the music of a former U2 hit song. Which one?

Answer: "With Or Without You"

LMC are Lee Monteverde, Matt Cadman and Chris Nuttall. U2 do not need any introduction, being one of the world's most successful bands!
9. Former Boyzone singer Ronan Keating scored a hit in February 2004 with "She Believes In Me". Who previously charted with that song in 1979?

Answer: Kenny Rogers

Another artist who seems to like covering old hits, Ronan has also charted with versions of "When You Say Nothing At All", "If Tomorrow Never Comes" and "We've Got Tonight". Kenny Rogers first entered the UK charts in 1969, and his hits include the number ones "Lucille" and "Coward Of The County".
10. The duo of Sam and Mark entered the charts at number one with their first single, a cover of the Beatles classic "With A Little Help From My Friends". Who last took this song to number one?

Answer: Wet Wet Wet

"Pop Idol" stars Sam and Mark are the third artists to take this song to number one. Joe Cocker was the first in 1968, with Wet Wet Wet repeating his success in 1988.
