Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Glam Rock later Punk band opened their account with the album "White Music"?

Answer: XTC

The much misunderstood XTC are not as lyrically challenged as some of their contemporaries. They still release the occasional record, but apart from their first album are actually closer to late 60's flower-power lyricism and good 'pop' melody.
2. Who changed his name from Declan Patrick MacManus?

Answer: Elvis Costello

Rat Scabies (premier drummer with The Damned he alleges) was Christopher Miller, Sid Vicious ('bass player' and vocalist with The Sex Pistols) was John Simon Ritchie-Beverly), Eddie Tenpole (lead singer with Tenpole Tudor) was Edward Tudor-Pole.
3. Which track by the Sex Pistols was one of the first punk records, in late 1976?

Answer: Anarchy in the UK

"Anarchy.." reached the top 40 (just) but was withdrawn by EMI. The other three tracks all reached the top 10 in 1977. "God Save the Queen" (withdrawn by A&M records) was probably kept off the number one spot deliberately, as it was the Queen's silver jubilee.
4. Which band released the album "Rattus Norvegicus"?

Answer: The Stranglers

Their first studio album featured such tracks as "Hanging Around" and "Peaches". The Skids had a hit with "Into the Valley", The Ruts had the classic "Babylon's Burning", The Members the classic "Sound of the Suburbs".
5. What line follows "Schools out early and soon we'll be learning" in The Boomtown Rats classic "I Don't Like Mondays"?

Answer: "And the lesson today is how to die"

This classic record was based on the Brenda Spencer killings; she killed two people and wounded nine others at the Cleveland Elementary School, San Carlos, San Diego, California on 29th January 1979. She told a reporter "I don't like Mondays. This livens up the day.". She has been turned down for parole four times and is next eligible in 2009.
6. In which song are the lyrics "The local guitar picker, Got his guitar picking thumb"?

Answer: Rock the Casbah

The other tracks are also all by The Clash and are constantly featured in movies, adverts etc. Sadly, Joe Strummer (John Graham Mellor) died in December 2002. His last album showed he was still a talented writer and performer - "Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros".
7. Which song is NOT on the album "Disguise in Love" by the poet of UK punk, John Cooper Clarke?

Answer: Beasley Street

Still writing and performing Johnny Clarke has lost none of his edge "Beasley Street" is from "Snap, Crackle & Bop" possibly a better album than "Disguise in Love" but it's very difficult to decide. His most recent album is from 1982! "Zip Style Method". Some of his poetry can be found on www.johncooperclarke.com
8. Which band had a hit with "Top of the Pops"?

Answer: The Rezillos

The Rezillos are also sometimes known as the Revillos; their first album was called "Can't Stand the Rezillos". The Rezillos are Scottish as are The Skids. The Undertones and Stiff Little Fingers are both from Northern Ireland.
9. Which early punk band featured Feargal Sharkey on lead vocals (1975-1983)?

Answer: The Undertones

The Undertones recorded one of the classic punk tracks "Teenage Kicks", the favourite record of the late, great John Peel.
10. What line follows "And if I start a commotion" in the classic "Ever Fallen in Love with Somebody (You Shouldn't Have Fallen in Love With)" by The Buzzcocks?

Answer: "I'll only end up losing you, And that's worse"

Another of the classic punk tracks from the biting wit of Pete Shelley. A new Buzzcocks album was released in 2006, "Flat-Pack Philosophy", and they're touring again. The incorrect words I made up, sorry Pete.
