Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To begin at the beginning: which single, released in October 1976, is usually quoted as the first British punk record?

Answer: 'New Rose' - The Damned

The Damned may not have been the first punk band, but it's reckoned by many that they were the first to get something out on vinyl. The B-side was a cover of the Beatles song 'Help!'
2. Who was Buzzcocks vocalist before Pete Shelley?

Answer: Howard Devoto

Devoto formed the Buzzcocks with Pete Shelley in 1975, and was their vocalist until January 1977. Guitarist Shelley took over as front man when he left. The two later collaborated on an album.
3. The original singer with Buzzcocks left and formed which band?

Answer: Magazine

After leaving Buzzcocks he formed Magazine in April 1977. They released their first single, 'Shot By Both Sides', in February 1978.
4. In 1983, Ian Astbury disbanded his group Southern Death Cult. Recruiting Theatre of Hate guitarist Billy Duffy, he then formed a new band. What were they called? (Careful - it's a tricky one).

Answer: Death Cult

Told you it was tricky! They started off being called Death Cult - they didn't become The Cult until some time in 1984.
5. Who links the Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees and the Glove?

Answer: Robert Smith

The Cure's vocalist has played guitar for the Banshees. The Glove was a sort of side project he did.
6. The Psychedelic Furs wrote 'Pretty in Pink' as a soundtrack to the film of the same name.

Answer: False

The song, first released in 1981, pre-dated this teen-schlock offering by five years and was the inspiration for the film. The Furs recorded and released a more chart-friendly version at the time of the film. Isn't popular culture a wonderful thing...
7. 'What a catalyst you turned out to be...' - a lyric from which song by The Jam?

Answer: Eton Rifles

What a classic. Why doesn't anybody write songs about class war any more?
8. Name The Stranglers' basin-headed keyboard player.

Answer: Dave Greenfield

Jean-Jacques Burnell was their bass guitarist. Dave Greenfield may have thought he was Ray Manzarek, the keyboard player with the Doors. Dave Prowse played Darth Vader but, more importantly, was also the Green Cross Code man.
9. What T-Rex song did Bauhaus cover?

Answer: Telegram Sam

And they managed to turn it into a decent song! Their version of 'Ziggy Stardust' was quite presentable too.
10. Where did Siouxsie and the Banshees largely hail from?

Answer: Bromley

Hard to imagine, if you've been there.
11. What was Peter and the Test Tube Babies' home town?

Answer: Brighton

I fondly recall their classics, 'Moped Lads' and 'Trapper Ain't Got a Bird'.
12. Which of these is NOT a song by The Skids?

Answer: In a Big Country

'In a Big Country' was by Big Country, formed by some members of The Skids when they split.
13. The Comsat Angels got their name from the book 'The Atrocity Exhibition'. Who wrote it?

Answer: Joy Division

First track on their laugh-a minute, classic album 'Closer'.
15. Which of these is NOT an Echo and the Bunnymen song?

16. Following the success of his band's 'Love Like Blood' single, who declared 'Handbag music is out'?

Answer: Jaz Coleman

Jaz, frontman of the magnificent Killing Joke, has also said he'd like to make enough money to buy his own army. Go on - send him a few quid!
17. Which Teardrop Explodes song includes the lyric, 'Bless my cotton socks I'm in the news'?

Answer: Reward

Mr Cope at his best, and the Teardrops' biggest hit (I think). They got their name from a comic strip.
18. Who released the amusingly offensive single 'So What'?

Answer: Anti-Nowhere League

Okay - who else thought it was really clever to know all the words when they were 14?
19. Which classic 'New Wave' album had pachyderms on the cover, included free post cards of the band, and had the words 'emotional fascist' on the inner sleeve?
