Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "We came here to entertain you, leaving here we aggravate you - don't you know it means the same to me?"

Answer: I'm the One

Van Halen formed in 1974 and in 1976 were spotted by Kiss' Gene Simmons, who financed a demo tape for the band. In 1977 they were signed to Warner Brothers Records. The rest, as they say ...
2. "I found the simple life ain't so simple when I jumped out on that road."

Answer: Runnin' With the Devil

The songs from both questions one and two are from Van Halen's debut album, simply titled "Van Halen." It was released in 1978 after taking only three weeks to produce.
3. "Oh, baby, baby, won't you turn your head my way?"

Answer: Dance the Night Away

"Dance the Night Away" was Van Halen's first Top 20 hit.
4. "I watched my television, almost lost my mind."

Answer: Light Up the Sky

The songs from both questions three and four are from the album "Van Halen II." This album took even less time to produce than their first. Early in 1979, "Van Halen" took a mere 6 days to complete.
5. "I'm taking whiskey to the party tonight and I'm looking for somebody to squeeze."

Answer: Romeo Delight

As a point of interest unrelated to this question, Van Halen originally named their group "Mammoth." Thank goodness they changed it!
6. "Sail away with someone's daughter - better save the women and children first."

Answer: Could This Be Magic?

The songs from both questions five and six come from the album "Women and Children First." The 1980 album was produced in two and a half weeks and spent two months in the top five.
7. "Danger in the rear-view mirror, there's trouble in the wind."

Answer: Sinner's Swing

The album "Fair Warning", released in the spring of 1981, was Van Halen's fourth consecutive million-seller.
8. "Got me on pins and needles and she knows she's mine and . . . ain't letting go."

Answer: So This is Love?

After the release of "Fair Warning", Van Halen went on a ten-month world tour.
9. "Yesterday was such an easy game for you to play."

Answer: Where Have All the Good Times Gone!

Van Halen's fifth album, "Diver Down", contained three remakes: "Where Have All the Good Times Gone!" by the Kinks; "(Oh) Pretty Woman" by Roy Orbison; and an a capella version of "Happy Trails."
10. "Married life done changed him somehow."

Answer: Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now)

"Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now)" features Jan Van Halen on clarinet.
11. "Guess that woman fall in love, she don't work for free."

Answer: Girl Gone Bad

While not the most well-known song on the album "1984", "Girl Gone Bad" features some spectacular guitar work by Eddie. Eddie was named Best Guitarist of the Year by Guitar Player Magazine for five years running after the release of their second album.
12. "You've got to roll with the punches and get to what's real."

Answer: Jump

Also from the album "1984", "Jump" was Van Halen's first number 1 hit. The album also had the distinction of being Van Halen's last with David Lee Roth.
13. "They're out to knock you out and put you down for the count."

Answer: Get Up

With the release of "5150", Van Halen needed to prove that they could make it with someone other than David Lee Roth. Fan response quickly proved that they could, as the album rocketed to number 1 on the charts.
14. "Run, run, run away, like a train rolling off the track."

Answer: Dreams

"5150" was released in 1986, and has sold almost 7 million copies.
15. "Just walk away, if I fall shy at all."

Answer: Finish What Ya Started

"OU812" followed up "5150" strongly, also reaching number 1 on the charts. "Finish What Ya Started" features Sammy Hagar on guitar, and Eddie recorded the song without using a pick.
16. "Staring at the sun, searching for the light - almost ended up blinded."

Answer: Mine All Mine

"OU812" was released in 1988 and has sold almost 4.5 million copies.
17. "Now, none of this was planned. It all just kinda happened."

Answer: Pleasure Dome

"For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" was released in 1991, and was Van Halen's third consecutive number 1 album with Sammy Hagar.
18. "One step ahead, one step behind - now you gotta run to get even."

Answer: Right Now

"Right Now", also off of "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge", was the album's top hit, and even had Pepsi use the song and the video for a commercial.
19. "I can jump - be the sacrifice - bear the cross just like Jesus Christ."

Answer: Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do)

"Balance" made it a clean sweep for Sammy Hagar and Van Halen as they made number 1 on the charts for the fourth time in a row. "Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do)" was inspired by the suicide of Kurt Cobain.
20. "Forked tongue in double speak, pretty soon you just might spring a leak."

Answer: Fire in the Hole

The last Van Halen album to date, "Van Halen III" had a new singer: Gary Cherone, formerly of Extreme. They parted ways shortly after producing the album, and nothing much has been heard of Van Halen since then (1998). "Fire in the Hole" was featured in the opening sequence of "Lethal Weapon 4."
