Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Edwin Starr's anti-war song "War" that hit number one in 1970 was written by?

Answer: Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong

"War! Huh! Yeah! What is it good for? Absolutely, Nothing." If you're not a private contractor of the Bush administration. According to Halliburtonwatch.org, "Audits conducted by the Pentagon's Defense Contract Audit Agency determined that Kellog Brown & Root(a division of Halliburton) had $1 billion in "questioned" expenses (i.e. expenses which military auditors consider "unreasonable") and $442 million in "unsupported" expenses (i.e. expenses which military auditors have determined contain no receipt or any explanation on how the expenses were disbursed)", so what is it good for? 1.5 billion in 2007 alone.
2. Can you complete the title of this 1963 Bob Dylan song, "______________ of War"?

Answer: Masters

This song is a current favorite of Pacifica radio's progressive news show, "Democracy Now! The War and Peace Report".
3. The 1989 Neville Brothers Album, "Yellow Moon" had on old Bob Dylan anti-war song. Can you name it?

Answer: With God On Our Side

One of the most moving songs of our time asked the question, "Did Judas Iscariot have God on his side?"
4. In 1971 Marvin Gaye had a Number 1 song about a veteran returning from Vietnam, can you name it?

Answer: What's Goin' On

The song is about Gaye's brother returning from 'Nam and re-acquainting himself with the world around him. What's Goin' On" is a song referenced often in the documentary, "Sir, No Sir", a film about soldiers in the front lines who refused to fight the war in Vietnam.
5. The movie "Jarhead" contains a Tom Waits anti-war song, Can you name it?

Answer: A Soldier's Things

Selling war medals after the death of a loved one. One of Waits' most beautiful pieces. When I think of George W. refusing to attend the funerals of fallen soldiers, this song comes to mind. According to The Independent, a White House directive was introduced in early 2003. An official said: "We don't want the remains of our service members who have made the ultimate sacrifice to be the subject of any kind of attention that is unwarranted or undignified." And the Waits lyric went,"...Oh and this one is for bravery, and this one was for me, and everything's a dollar in this box."
6. Can you complete the following U2 lyric: "In the locust wind_________________"

Answer: Comes a rattle and hum

The line provided the title of U2's 1988 live album and accompanying movie, but the plea to "bullet the blue sky" seemed to have fallen on deaf ears in the 2000s as the apathy in America grew and grew and Gulf War II dragged on and on.
7. Can you name the band, originally led by Eric Burdon, that recorded "Slippin Into Darkness", "Low Rider" and "Get Down?"

Answer: War

"War Live" (1973) opened my eyes to music with political content with its spontaneous indictment of the Chicago Police Force, its calls for unity, and its critical look at the Nixon administration.
8. Can you name the 1980 Prince song that ends with the chant, "you're gonna have to fight your own damn war, cause we don't wanna fight no more?"

Answer: Partyup

Prince gave a million different options to picking up a gun and most of them involved the removal of his G-String. He brought a very new, very literal meaning to the phrase, "make love, not war."
9. "Rock the Casbah" is a song about Iraq.

Answer: False

The Casbah is in Algeria, but the song is about the banning of music in Iran by the Ayatollah Khomeini. Although the song was frequently played during both Gulf Wars, Iraq has no official relevance.
10. The song "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" was originally recorded by whom?

Answer: Gil Scott-Heron

In the '70's only a few people knew what he was talking about, but with media consolidation, a dictatorship in government , and apathy growing to level beyond that of Nazi Germany in the U.S., Gil Scott-Heron is looking like a prophet in most people's eyes.

According to DemocracyNow, on February 15 2003, between 12 and 14 million people worldwide stood up in protest to the war in Iraq, an act unprecedented in the history of the world, but if you blinked you would have missed it on the American media. This monumental action was relegated to a 30 second sound bite on most news programs surrounded by a healthy dose of the call to war. Bush invaded a month later; the revolution will not be televised.

According to a study published by the British Medical journal The Lancet, the Iraq "War has wiped out about 655,000 Iraqis or more than 500 people a day since the U.S.-led invasion, a new study reports. Violence including gunfire and bombs caused the majority of deaths but thousands of people died from worsening health and environmental conditions directly related to the conflict that began in 2003, U.S. and Iraqi public health researchers said.", Realistic figures on Iraqi casualties were strangely absent from the American media until this study was published with little fanfare on CNN's website. When you take into account the illegality of the war, the bogus reasons for invasion, and administration's direct ties to Halliburton and the other private contractors, the word genocide comes to mind; the revolution will not be televised.

In 2006, the American people elected a Democratic Senate and Congress with a hope to end the conflict in Iraq. They passed a resolution that would have brought an end to the funding of this war, but when they brought it to the president, the cameras went black, and instead of peace, we got a "surge" of 50,000 troops; the revolution will not be televised.

If there's a revolution going on, it ain't on TV in any place the average person can see it, and in order for hope to be maintained in this country, the revolution better not be no rerun, brother, the revolution better be live.
