Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I woke last night to the sound of thunder. How far off, I sat and wondered; Started hummin' sumpin' from 1962 Ain't it funny how..." According to this 1976 Bob Seger classic, what was "funny"?

Answer: the night moves

In 1976, "Night Moves" made its way up the U.S. music charts to land at the number four position. This success changed the way Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band were viewed. No longer considered just a "regional" band, the song transformed them into a band with a national following in the U.S.

Bob Seger's roots were in the American "heartland", and his work was largely focused on blue-collar workers. The Silver Bullet Band was composed of a group of Detroit musicians, while Bob himself was a native of Dearborn, later having lived Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The song "Night Moves" was taken from an album of the same name.
2. Pink Floyd's album, "The Dark Side Of The Moon" spawned four major hit singles that were cuts off the album.

Answer: False

Actually, only two hit singles were released off of the album, "The Dark Side Of The Moon". They were "Money" and "Time". Maybe that is somehow appropriate since many people subscribe to the philosophy that "Time is money".

"The Dark Side Of The Moon" was released in 1973, to rave reviews.
3. Running for over seven minutes in length, this song by The Moody Blues only made it to the number 19 slot in the U.K. when it was originally released in 1967, but made it to number two on U.S. charts just a few years later, when it was re-released in 1972. What song about nighttime was this?

Answer: Nights In White Satin

The Moody Blues had a much greater success with their second release of the song "Nights In White Satin" (a cut off of their album, "Days Of Future Passed"). One possible reason for this may have been that music audiences of the 1960s era were pre-conditioned to enjoy songs shorter in length, but by the early 70s longer songs had prevailed to capture the attention of audiences.

"Nights In White Satin" was only one segment of the "day" that was featured on the album. Other cuts include, "The Day Begins", "Morning Glory", "Dawn Is A Feeling", "Another Morning", "Peak Hour", "Forever Afternoon (Tuesday?)", (Evening) Time To Get Away, "The Sunset", "Twilight Time", and "Late Lament".
4. From what song recorded by Cher in 1974 were the following lyrics taken? "The fortune queen of New Orleans, Was brushing her cat in her black limousine. On the backseat were scratches from The marks of men her fortune she had won. Couldn't see through the tinted glass, She said 'Home James' and he hit the gas Followed her to some darkened room, She took my money, she said 'I'll be with you soon'."

Answer: Dark Lady

"Dark Lady" was a moderately successful album for Cher, and it was the last album to be promoted on "The Sonny and Cher Show", a variety show that featured her and her then-husband, Sonny Bono. The couple divorced later in the year, and Cher became a free agent, in more ways than one.

The song only made it to the 69th position on the U.S. charts, and failed to chart at all in the U.K.

The lyrics of "Dark Lady" are focused on a fortune teller, her lover and the lover's wife; the classic "lover's triangle". As the storyline of the song progresses, the wife discovers that her husband has been having an affair with the fortune teller, (the Dark Lady), and she eventually kills both of them in a fit of rage for their indiscretion.
5. In 1963, (I know; that's SUCH a long time ago!), Bobby Vee had a hit with this song that spoke of the ability of the darkened skies of nightfall being able to "see", at least, metaphorically. Now, let's see... what WAS that tune?

Answer: The Night Has A Thousand Eyes

"The Night Has A Thousand Eyes" became a U.S. and a U.K. number three hit single for Bobby Vee. In the song's lyrics, a young man questions the fidelity of his love, and reminds her that the stars (eyes of the night sky) are "watching" her every move.
6. The album "They Only Come Out At Night" was the third successful album released by this group, in 1972. Featuring such powerful hits as "Frankenstein" and "Free Ride", the album was produced by which of the following bands?

Answer: The Edgar Winter Group

The Edgar Winter Group had previously enjoyed success with the albums, "Edgar Winter's White Trash" and "Roadwork". One of the guitarists on the album "They Only Come Out At Night" was Rick Derringer, a musician who had written the 1960s hit "Hang On Sloopy" while he was a member of The McCoys, and who later (in 1973) popularized a song entitled "Rock And Roll Hoochie Koo".

Edgar Winter and his brother, Johnny, were both rock musicians from Beaumont, Texas.
7. "I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night" was a 1966 release that landed at number 11 on U.S. charts, although the group only managed to hit the number 49 slot in the U.K. with the same song. What was the name of this "psychedelic" pop group?

Answer: The Electric Prunes

The Electric Prunes were initially known as The Sanctions, a band that was formed in high school. The song "I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night" was a tongue-in-cheek reference to excessive drinking, as well as being a reference to sexual encounters.
8. In 1985 The Commodores sang a tribute to two former music greats; Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson, who both died in 1984. What was the name of this superb hit?

Answer: Nightshift

"Nightshift" by The Commodores was the most successful song for the group after Lionel Richie had decided to leave the group. It peaked at number three on Billboard's Hot 100 and at number one on the R&B charts.

The opening lyrics to this soulful tribute to two of R&B's most classy artists are as follows:

"Marvin, he was a friend of mine,
And he could sing a song
His heart in every line.
Marvin sang of the joy and pain,
He opened up our minds
And I still can hear him say
Oh, talk to me, so you can see
What's going on.
Say you will sing your songs
Forevermore (evermore)..."

(What a fantastic tribute to two great rock and R&B artists -
Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson; WE MISS THESE GUYS!)
9. Here are some lyrics pulled from the middle of a song released in 1983 by Jackson Browne, (just to be a little bit different). "...Tender is the night And the benediction of the neon light Tender are the hunters, tender is the night You're gonna want me tonight When you're ready to surrender Forget about who's right..." Okay. Ready? Name that tune!

Answer: Tender Is The Night

"Tender Is The Night" was a cut taken from Jackson Browne's album "Lawyers In Love". It peaked at number 25 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. In 1966 he was a member of the Nitty-Gritty Dirt Band, prior to striking out on his own.

In the U.S. he has sold over 18 million albums, and that's not even counting those sold in other countries. Talk about a rockin' and ragin' success story!
10. "Here we are in a room full of strangers. Standing in the dark where your eyes couldn't see me Well, I have to follow you Though you didn't want me to. But that won't stop my lovin' I can't stay away; Blaming it all on the..." What were the Bee Gees blaming "it all on" in this 1975 mega-hit disco song?

Answer: Nights On Broadway

"The Nights On Broadway" reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1975. Brothers Maurice, Barry and Robin Gibb had just begun singing in the disco genre, after years of singing more ballad-like tunes. As they began reinventing themselves, they discovered that their popularity increased almost exponentially.

They were the quintessential "disco trio" all through the era of the 1970s disco craze.
