British-American songwriter, composer and lyricist Carroll Coates wrote both popular songs and film music, including the theme song for the 1963 movie "Sunday in New York". His lovely "London by Night" had its debut recording in 1951 by Frank Sinatra with orchestra directed by Axel Stordahl.

Superstar Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Corcovado", also known as "Quiet Nights and Quiet Stars" or "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars" is a timeless classic recorded by such greats as Vic Damone, Blossom Deary and Engelbert Humperdinck as well as The Chairman of the Board on his 1967 album "Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim".

In 1953, the distinguished American actor Richard Kiley originated the role of the Caliph in the Toni Award-winning musical "Kismet". Commissioned by Edwin Lester, founder and director of the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera, who had previously produced "Song of Norway", adapting the melodies of Edvard Grieg, "Kismet" is based on the 1911 play of the same title by Edward Knoblock. The musical was adapted by Charles Lederer and Luther Davis, with lyrics and musical adaptation (as well as original music) by Robert Wright and George Forrest. The music was mostly adapted from pieces by the Nineteenth Century Russian composer Alexander Borodin.

In Act I, the caliph duets with his love interest, Marsinah, on the evergreen standard "Stranger in Paradise". In Act II, he and his entourage sing the joyous "Night of My Nights", adapted from "Serenade" (Allegretto, D-flat Major, titled "Dreaming of love" by Borodin) from his major work for the piano "The Petite Suite", published in 1885.

"The Night Has a Thousand Eyes", written by Benjamin Weisman, Dorothy Wayne and Marilynn Garrett, was released by Bobby Vee in December of 1962. It became an internationally charting hit the next year, and remains an enduring favorite.

Composer Richard Kerr and lyricist Will Jennings' "Somewhere in the Night" was the third single release from Helen Reddy's 1975 "No Way to Treat a Lady" album. Barry Manilow included the song on his 1978 album "Even Now", the single being released later that year.

The evergreen standard "In the Still of the Night" by Cole Porter was first sung by Nelson Eddy in the 1937 MGM film "Rosalie". On September 8 of that year Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra, with Jack Leonard on vocals, made the first commercial recording of the song. Released the next month, the record charted on October 16, staying on the charts for five weeks and peaking at number three.
