Dolly Parton was performing at a night club in Las Vegas when, as she tells the story: "So I was singing this sad song, and so this old drunk was in Vegas; I guess he'd come there to have a good time, and he came in to see my show, and I started singing that song, and he (laughing) sat, and he hollered out, 'Do you have to sing that GD sad ass song?' Answer: Long Black Veil

"Long Black Veil" is a 1959 country ballad, written by Danny Dill and Marijohn Wilkin and originally recorded by Lefty Frizzell. It's a song told from the point of view of a man falsely accused of murder and executed. He refuses to provide an alibi, since on the night of the murder he was having an affair with his best friend's wife, and would rather die and take their secret to his grave than admit the truth.

The chorus describes the woman's mourning visits to his gravesite, wearing a long black veil and enduring a wailing wind, but she never tells anyone that she's his alibi.
