Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Cuts Both Ways", "Into the Light", "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me". The artist is who?

Answer: Gloria Estefan

These were Gloria's solo efforts which gave us songs like "Don't Wanna Lose You" and "Coming Out of the Dark". A terrific artist with or without the Miami Sound Machine.
2. "Number 5", "Rock Love", "The Joker". The artist is who?

Answer: Steve Miller Band

Steve Miller learned a few chords from Les Paul when he was just four-years-old and formed his first blues band, the Marksmen Combo when he was twelve.
3. "Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.", "The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle", "Nebraska". The artist is which of these?

Answer: Bruce Springsteen

Springsteen wrote the Manfred Mann #1 single, "Blinded by the Light" but when Bruce recorded it originally, it went nowhere.
4. "The Swing", "Listen Like Thieves", "Kick". The group is who?

Answer: INXS

Originally called the Farriss Brothers, INXS exploded onto the pop music scene with the album "Kick" which produced top ten hits like "Never Tear Us Apart" and "Need You Tonight". Lead singer/composer Michael Hutchence's death is still something of a mystery.
5. "Young Americans", "Scary Monsters", "Never Let Me Down". The artist is?

Answer: David Bowie

Androgyny, thy name is David Bowie. Actually, his real name is David Jones but he changed it since Davey Jones of the Monkees was popular when Bowie was getting started.
6. "Black Moses", "Chocolate Chip", "U Turn". The artist is?

Answer: Isaac Hayes

But I'm talkin' about "Shaft"! Isaac Hayes was the first African-American composer to win an Oscar for his soundtrack to the movie "Shaft". Isaac has since settled in Colorado where he works as a Chef for an elementary school.
7. "Idlewild South", "Eat a Peach", "Beginnings". The group is?

Answer: The Allman Brothers

Duane Allman and Berry Oakley were both killed in motorcycle accidents one year apart and within three blocks of each other. I saw Greg with his band in a nightclub in Idaho in the early '80s and they did a great show. Greg used a lot of Kleenex that evening, wiping his nose and eyes. I guess he had a cold or something.
8. "Trilogy", "Brain Salad Surgery", "Love Beach". The group is?

Answer: Emerson, Lake, and Palmer

Emerson, Lake, and Palmer were pioneers in so-called techno-rock, using synthesizers and electronic percussion heavily. Their biggest hit single was "Lucky Man" in '71. Carl Palmer went on to help form the band Asia in '81 with Steve Howe and Geoffrey Downes, formerly of Yes.
9. "For You", "Lovesexy", "Purple Rain". The artist was?

Answer: Prince

Prince Rogers Nelson was known as The Artist Formerly Known As Prince (TAFKAP) was flamboyent, controversial, and unique, but above all else, talented. The Minneapolis native had such hits as "Little Red Corvette" and "Kiss".
10. "Houses of the Holy", "Physical Graffiti", "Coda". The group is?

Answer: Led Zeppelin

Loud and rowdy, John Bonham, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and John Paul Jones set the music world on it's ear in the late '60s. The albums, touring and partying continued until 1980 when Bonham died, having drowned in his own vomit due to alcohol intoxication. The band broke up shortly afterward but continue to pursue solo projects. Still my favorite band.
