Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where did Puff the Magic Dragon live?

Answer: By the sea

Based on a 1959 poem by Leonard Lipton, "Puff the Magic Dragon" was a 1963 hit for folk band "Peter, Paul & Mary". Puff lived 'by the sea' in the fictional land of Honalee.
2. In his 1974 hit single, "The Streak", to whom did Ray Stevens give instructions not to look?

Answer: Ethel

With sales of more than five million, "The Streak" spent three weeks at the top of the US Billboard 100 chart and also reached number one in the singles charts in the UK, Canada and New Zealand. Those who remember the record will probably recall the instruction "Don't Look, Ethel!".
3. Who was knocked down and killed by Santa and his reindeer in the 1979 single by Elmo & Patsy?

Answer: Grandma

Released in 1979 by the husband/wife duo of Elmo & Patsy Trigg Shropshire, "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer" was the only title that finished in the Top 10 of two 2007 pools of "most disliked Christmas song". The song tells the story of a grandmother who drinks too much eggnog and staggers out into the snow, where she is run down and killed by Santa and his reindeer.

The song concludes that "a man who drives a sleigh and plays with elves" (Santa) should not be allowed a driver's license.
4. Which English punk rock band reached number four in the UK singles chart in 1984 with their cover version of "Nellie the Elephant"?

Answer: Toy Dolls

Although never a hit single for her, the original version of "Nellie the Elephant", recorded by child actress Mandy Miller in 1956, was regularly played on BBC Radio. Sunderland-based punk rock band the "Toy Dolls" recorded their version of the song for their 1983 debut album "Dig That Groove Baby", and they reached number four the following year when they released the track as a single.

This was the band's only chart single.
5. American group LMFAO became the first duo for almost a decade to score consecutive US number one hit singles when they topped the Billboard Top 100 in January 2012 with which novelty record?

Answer: Sexy and I Know It

"Sexy and I Know It" was originally released on LMFAO's album "Sorry for Party Rocking". Madonna joined the duo to perform the song at SuperBowl XLVI.
6. The defensive unit of which NFL team adopted the title of a 1958 number one US single by Sheb Wooley?

Answer: Minnesota Vikings

Sheb Wooley topped the US singles chart in 1958 with a novelty song called "The Purple People Eaters", which tells the tale of strange aliens who come to Earth because they want to join a rock and roll band. The defensive unit of the Minnesota Vikings, whose uniforms are partly purple, became known as the "Purple People Eaters" in the 1970s.
7. Patti Page in the USA and Lita Roza in the UK both scored number one singles with which 1953 novelty song?

Answer: (How Much is) That Doggie in the Window?

Patti Page's version of "(How Much is) That Doggie in the Window" was released in December 1952. It went to number one in both the Billboard 100 and the Australian singles charts the following year, but stalled at number nine in the UK. When Lita Roza hit the top spot in the UK singles chart in April 1953 with her version of the song, she scored two notable firsts -- the first female soloist to top the chart and the first artist from Liverpool to do so.

This was also the first UK number one single with a "?" in the title.
8. Which English satirist wrote and sang the 1968 Top 5 hit "I'm an Urban Spaceman", and then performed it in a 1992 film?

Answer: Neil Innes

Writer and performer of comic songs Neil Innes was both the writer of "I'm an Urban Spaceman" and the lead vocalist of the group that scored a hit with it, The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. Carol Cleveland (nicknamed 'the Seventh Python') danced while Innes performed the song in the 1982 film "Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl".
9. Which 1962 US number one single has been covered by The Beach Boys, the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, Boris Karloff, Vincent Price, Bad Manners and Alvin & the Chipmunks?

Answer: Monster Mash

"Monster Mash" was a 1962 US number one hit for Bobby 'Boris' Pickett & the Crypt-Kicker Five. It failed to chart in the UK as it was banned by the BBC as "too morbid". It did, however, reach number three in the UK when it was re-released in 1973.
10. "Lily the Pink" was the 1968 UK Christmas number one single. The band that recorded it included the brother of which member of The Beatles?

Answer: Paul McCartney

"Lily the Pink" tells the story of a 'medicinal compound' that reputedly cures just about all ills. It was recorded by the comedy, poetry and musical group The Scaffold, a Liverpool-based trio comprising Roger McGough, John Gorman and Mike McGear. McGear's real name is Peter Michael McCartney and he is the brother of Paul McCartney.
