"I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing (In Perfect Harmony)" was a number one hit for four weeks on the UK singles chart for The New Seekers in 1972. It reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 the same year.

"I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing" was written by Bill Backer/Billy Davis/Roger Cook/Roger Greenaway. Originally written as "I'd Like To Buy The World A Coke", an advertising jingle for Coco-Cola in 1971. The melody was derived from a song already written by Cook and Greenaway called "True Love and Apple Pie". That song was recorded by Susan Shirley and released in 1971 but did not chart in the UK or US.

The New Seekers were formed in 1969 by Keith Potger who was an ex-member of the Australian group The Seekers. The group at the time of this hit were Peter Doyle, Eve Graham, Marty Kristian, Paul Layton and Lyn Paul. With various line ups they had six Top Ten hits on the UK singles chart between 1970 and 1978, which included two number one hits.

American group The Hill Side Singers also recorded a version of "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing". It entered the Billboard Hot 100 before The New Seekers version but got stuck at number 13. It did not chart in the UK.

UK group Chicory Tip formerly known as The Sonics were Rick Foster, Peter Hewson, Barry Mayger, Brian Shearer and Rod Cloutt (who replaced Rick Foster). "Son Of My Father" was a cover version of German singer Michael Holm's hit "Nachts Scheint Die Sonne". The original music was composed by Giorgio Moroder and the English lyrics were written by Pete Bellotte.

"Son Of My Father" was Chicory Tip's only UK Top Ten hit. They had two other hits on the UK singles chart - "What's Your Name" reached number 13 in 1972 and "Good Grief Christina" reached number 17 in 1973.

Nilsson was born Harry Edward Nilsson III in Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A. in 1941. He died of heart failure in Agoura Hills, California, USA, in 1994 aged 52. He never toured or gave live performances. His songs were recorded by artists as diverse as Fred Astaire, The Monkees and The Yardbirds.

He recorded his own songs but his two biggest hits were written by others. "Everybody's Talking'", written by singer/songwriter Fred Neil and "Without You" written by two members of the UK group Badfinger, Pete Ham and Tom Evans. Nilsson was admired by Paul McCartney and John Lennon and was also a great friend of John Lennon. They got thrown out of the Troubadour nightclub in West Hollywood USA together in 1974, for drunken heckling of the Smothers Brothers.

Marc Bolan was born Mark Feld in London, UK, in 1947. He was killed in 1977, two weeks before his 30th birthday when the Mini he was a passenger in (he never learned to drive) hit a sycamore tree in Barnes, London, UK. He was less than two miles from his home in East Sheen, London, UK.

Alice Cooper was born Vincent Damon Furnier in Detroit, Michigan, USA, in 1948. In 1964 he and some friends entered a talent contest calling themselves The Earwigs; they dressed like The Beatles and mimed to their records. They won, bought some instruments from a pawn shop, changed their name to The Spiders and learned how to play. After another name change to The Nazz they became Alice Cooper, the name was selected by means of a ouija board.

Alice Cooper were Vincent Furnier (vocals), Michael Bruce (rhythm guitar), Glen Buxton (lead guitar), Dennis Dunaway (bass) and Neal Smith (drums). "School's Out" was their only Top Ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100 between 1971 and 1974. They had four Top Ten hits on the UK singles chart between 1972 and 1974 which included the number one hit "School's Out". At this point Vincent Furnier assumed the Alice Cooper name and went solo.

He went one better than the group and had two Top Ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100 between 1975 and 1991, "You And I" number nine in 1977 and "Poison" number seven in 1989. In the UK he had one Top Ten hit on the singles chart between 1977 and 1994 when "Poison" reached number two in 1989.

UK group Lieutenant Pigeon was a spin-off from the experimental music group Stavely Makepeace. The members were Nigel Fletcher (drums), Stephen Johnson (bass), Rob Woodward (piano) and Rob's mother Hilda Woodward (piano). The group's sound was dominated by the heavy honky-tonk-style piano played by Rob's Mum.

They had two hit instrumental hits in 1972 on the UK singles chart, the above mentioned "Mouldy Old Dough" and "Desperate Dan" which reached number 17. Neither charted in the US.

Chuck Berry was born Charles Edward Anderson Berry in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, in 1926. He first performed in public in 1941 while attending the Charles E. Sumner High School in St. Louis. Three years later in 1944 he was arrested and convicted of armed robbery after robbing three shops in Kansas City and then stealing a car at gunpoint with some friends. He was released on his 21st birthday in 1947.

His big break in music came in 1955 when Muddy Waters suggested that he contact Leonard Chess of Chess Records. On May 21st 1955 Chuck Berry recorded an adaptation of "Ida Red" which became "Maybellene". It featured Willie Dixon on bass, Jerome Green (from Bo Diddley's band) on maracas, Johnnie Johnson on piano and Jasper Thomas on drums. "Maybellene" sold over 1,000,000 copies, reaching number one on the Billboard Rhythm and Blues chart and number five on the Billboard Best Sellers in Stores chart in 1955. It did not chart in the UK.
