Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which is these musical genres best describes the style of The Waifs?

Answer: Folk rock

The Waifs are variously described as a folk rock or blues and roots band. In 2001 they played at the iconic Newport Folk Festival, and they have had multiple nominations in the "Best Blues and Roots Album" and "Blues and Roots Work of the Year" categories of Australian music industry awards.

In addition to the usual guitars, bass and drums, the band's instrumental repertoire includes ukulele, mandolin, harmonica and tambourine.
2. The Waifs have 3 core founding members. Their touring and recording band includes some auxiliary members, who have varied over the years. Which of these is NOT one of the original Waifs?

Answer: Ben Franz

The Waifs formed in 1992 when sisters Donna and Vikki Simpson, who had been playing in pubs as the duo Colours, met guitarist Josh Cunningham. The band's rhythm section of Dave Ross Macdonald (drums) and Ben Franz (bass) formalised several years later.
3. Which two members of The Waifs are siblings?

Answer: Vikki and Donna

Donna Simpson and Vikki Thorn (nee Simpson) are sisters who traveled around Western Australia playing in pubs. With the addition of Josh Cunningham the band members began touring the country in a Kombi van at the tender ages of 16 (Vikki), 18 (Josh) and 20 (Donna).
4. The siblings in The Waifs hail from which vast Australian state?

Answer: Western Australia

Donna and Vikki grew up in Albany, Western Australia, as daughters of a local fisherman. Josh is the son of a farmer from Moruya on the south coast of NSW. The imagery of regional Australia peppers their lyrics, for example, the songs "Black Dirt Track", "Fisherman's Daughter" and "Sun Dirt Water".
5. What is the name of the album by The Waifs that was named best independent release at the 2003 Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Awards?

Answer: Up All Night

"Up All Night" debuted in third position on the ARIA album chart - the band's fourth and most successful album to that point. In addition to "Best Independent Release", it won the categories of "Best Blues and Roots Album", and Chris Thompson won both "Engineer of the Year" and "Producer of the Year" for his work on the album. "Up All Night" was also nominated for the big prize, "Album of the Year", which was ultimately awarded to Powderfinger's "Vulture Street".
6. Which musical icon(s) did The Waifs support in tours of Australia, North America and Europe in 2003?

Answer: Bob Dylan

The Waifs were chosen as the opening act for Dylan's Australian tour in early 2003, and were subsequently invited to join the legend of the folk rock genre in concerts in the US and later Europe. There couldn't have been a more perfect match, since The Waifs started their career performing Dylan's music.
7. The Waifs' song "Gillian", released in 1996, is a ballad. Who is it addressed to?

Answer: The composer's mother

Josh Cunningham wrote "Gillian" in honour of his mother; however, as he didn't take on any lead singing roles in the band's early years the recording is sung by Vicki. The subject of the song isn't apparent until the final verse:

"Your influence has been profound and I'm proud to be your son.
Your blood is my blood and we are forever bound.
You're the inspiration to the way I live my life.
I'm singing, Gillian if you weren't my mother I'd make you my wife".
8. The Waifs' first hit single was voted third in Triple J's "Hottest 100" and nominated for two Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Awards in 2003. What is it called?

Answer: London Still

"London Still", written by Donna Simpson, was nominated in the ARIA categories "Best Independent Release" and "Breakthrough Artist - Single". It also received a nomination for "Song of the Year" from the 2003 Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA) awards for composers and songwriters.
9. A song by The Waifs about a small piece of Australian history won first prize in the 2006 USA Songwriting Competition. What is it called?

Answer: Bridal Train

"Bridal Train" was released in Australia in 2004 and was voted 54th most popular song of the year in radio station Triple J's "Hottest 100" competition. The Waifs' Vikki Thorn wrote the single, which won both the Folk category and overall grand prize in the 2006 USA Songwriting Competition.

This was the first time in the competition's history that the grand prize went to a songwriter outside the USA.
10. The independent label Jarrah Records was jointly founded by The Waifs and which other Australian musician?

Answer: John Butler

John Butler is the leader of the group "The John Butler Trio". The Waifs and Butler were both managed by Phil Stevens, who is the remaining founder and co-owner of Jarrah Records.

Jarrah is a type of eucalyptus tree common to Western Australia, where John Butler and the Simpson sisters all come from. The wood from the tree is known for its strength, versatility and striking colour.
