This hymn is based on a poem written by Swedish author Carl Boberg. It was popularized by George Beverly Shea during the Billy Graham Crusades. Elvis Presley and others have also released versions of "How Great Thou Art" with the word "worlds" instead of "works" in this verse.

One of the stories about this hymn involves the missionary Rev. E.P. Scott in India. He had been warned not to approach a certain murderous tribe, but he felt compelled to bring them the gospel. When he came to their village, he was immediately surrounded by the spears of their warriors.

He had nothing to offer them; but he had his violin in his hand and began to play and sing this song. When he opened his eyes, they had dropped their spears and were listening to him. They spared his life and he was able to bring the gospel to them.
