Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Tubeway Army released the album "Replicas" in 1979. What did singer Gary Numan claim on the album? "I Nearly Married _____"?

Answer: A Human

The influence of the seminal Tubeway Army album "Replicas" is phenomenal, far-reaching, and sadly overlooked. The sci-fi imagery and apparent celebration of what would be dystopia in literary terms can only really be compared to Kraftwerk in terms of depth, but it influenced everything from dance music to heavy metal. Numan's brilliance has always been sitting comfortably between dour avant-garde industrial bands and flimsy pop music.

The album is the last as Tubeway Army since Gary became the focal point and carried on as a solo artist with practically the same band a la Alice Cooper. It was the first to use drum machine too, although later albums did feature a human drummer, albeit a different one to Tubeway Army. The track "I Nearly Married a Human", which is an instrumental, closes the album.

Gary did actually marry a human, although he had a fling with "Cars" in 1979. "So I Married an Axe Murderer" is the name of a 1993 comedy film.

2. In the song "I Did What I Did For _____" by Tony Christie, who was it that he did what he did for?

Answer: Maria

"I Did What I Did For Maria" was a number two hit on the UK singles chart for Tony Christie in 1971. It did not chart in the US.

"I Did What I Did For Maria" was written and produced by Mitch Murray and Peter Callander. Singer/songwriter/musician/actor Tony Christie was born Anthony Fitzgerald in Conisbrough, West Riding of Yorkshire, England in 1943. His first UK chart entry was "Las Vegas" which peaked at number 21 on the UK singles chart.

He had two UK Top 20 hits in the '70s and one in the '90s when he was featured as vocalist with The All Seeing I on "Walk Like A Panther '98". He has sold over 10,000,000 albums world wide and is especially popular in Germany. Between 1991 and 2002 he recorded nine albums specifically for the German market.

In 2011 Tony Christie released a charity single with The Band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines, Collingwood. It was a special arrangement of "Steal The Sun" in aid of the "Help for Heroes Charity", supporting all of the British Forces fighting on the frontline in Afghanistan.

3. This Bee Gees' song was a worldwide hit but not in the UK. Can you find the title of the song with these lyrics to help you? "I looked at the skies running my hands over my eyes And I fell out of bed hurting my head from things that I said 'Till I finally died which started the whole world living"

Answer: I Started A Joke

"I Started A Joke" by The Bee Gees was number one hit in Australia, Canada and New Zealand. Number three in the Netherlands, number five in Switzerland and number six in the USA. It was not released as a single in the UK.

"I Started A Joke" was mainly written by Robin Gibb but credited to Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb. It was a track on their 1968 album "Idea" which made the Top Ten on the album charts of Australia, Canada, France, UK and Germany.

Maurice Gibb died of a heart attack in 2003 aged 53 and Robin Gibb died of liver and kidney failure in 2012 aged 62.

4. The Blue Belles had a US hit with "I Sold My _____ To The Junkman". What was it that they sold to him?

Answer: Heart

"I Sold My Heart To The Junkman" was a number 15 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 for The Blue Belles in 1962. It did not chart in the UK.

"I Sold My Heart To The Junkman" was credited to Jimmie Thomas who was really Leon René and first recorded in 1946 by The Basin Street Boys. The actual group that sang on the 1962 version was The Starlets. The president of Newton Records Harold Robinson had the record released by The Blue Belles who used to be known as The Ordettes who later changed their name to Patti LaBelle and Her Blue Belles.

If all this is not enough The Blue Belles also recorded a version of their own before promoting it on various TV shows. Harold Robinson was then sued by the manager of The Starlets for ownership of the song and won each member of The Starlets $5,000. It it not known for sure if in fact The Starlets' (who disbanded in 1963) vocal track was replaced by session singers on the 1962 release.

5. A Tribe Called Quest's debut single from their debut album told the tale of a mishap on a road trip. What was the title of that song?

Answer: I Left My Wallet In El Segundo

"I Left My Wallet in El Segundo" was off the album "People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm" which came out in 1990. The band didn't really hit the mainstream until the follow-up album "The Low End Theory" a year later.

The song "I Left My Wallet In El Segundo" has become a classic, partly thanks to its comedy video in which rapper Q-Tip is distracted by a pretty face at a diner in El Segundo and forgets to pick up his wallet. He doesn't realize it's missing until he and the lads are all back in New York.

"I Left My Love In Avalon" is a line from "Avalon" by Al Jolson, "I Left A Woman Waiting" is on Leonard Cohen's album "Death of a Ladies' Man", and "I Left My Heart In San Francisco" has been sung by many artists; the best-known version is by Tony Bennett.

6. Which Scottish singer-songwriter, arguably best-known for playing Buster Bloodvessel in the Beatles' film "Magical Mystery Tour", gave us the songs "I Used To Lie In Bed" and "I Had A Little Boat" on the albums "Dandruff" and "Ludo" respectively?

Answer: Ivor Cutler

"I Had A Little Boat" is a wonderful example of Ivor Cutler's lo-fi (years before it had become a genre) approach to music, and also perfect introduction to his humour which can't really be described as gallows humour but certainly draws on disappointment, hardship and misfortune.

The album "Ludo" was recorded by the Ivor Cutler Trio, which was Ivor on harmonium and vocals, Gill Lyons on bass, and Trevor Tompkins on drums. It was produced by the fifth Beatle, George Martin, who had met Ivor on the set of the Beatles film Ivor had been in. The Beatles connection was Paul McCartney who was a Cutler fan. Sir Paul appeared in the wonderful documentary about Ivor, "Looking For Truth With A Pin".

"I Used To Lie In Bed" is a very brief yet perspicacious spoken-word piece from "Dandruff", the majority of which is insightful snippets and poems, although there are a couple of tunes on there.

About the red herrings: although all the singers were born in Scotland, only Ivor was born early enough (1923) to have feasibly been in The Beatles film in an adult role.

7. Who had a Billboard number one country hit in the USA in the '50s with "I Forgot To Remember To Forget"?

Answer: Elvis Presley

"I Forgot To Remember To Forget" reached number one on the Billboard Country chart for Elvis Presley in 1955. It did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100 or the UK singles chart.

"I Forgot To Remember To Forget" was written by Stan Kesler/Charlie Feathers. It featured Scotty Moore on lead guitar, Bill Black on bass guitar and Johnny Bernero on drums. The B-Side "Mystery Train" written by Junior Parker, peaked at number ten on the Billboard Country chart. It did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100 but reached number 25 on the UK singles chart in 1957.

Many singers have recorded "I Forgot To Remember To Forget", Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, B. J. Thomas and Chris Isaak among them. The Beatles recorded the song for the BBC radio programme "From Us To You" in 1964. This version was included on their 1994 album "Live at the BBC". The lead singer on The Beatles version is George Harrison, but it is definitely not one of their best songs.

8. Which singer (he was dead less than six months later) and his group had a hit with "I Fought The Law" in 1966?

Answer: The Bobby Fuller Four

"I Fought The Law" was a number nine hit on the Billboard Hot 100 for The Bobby Fuller Four in 1966. It peaked at number 33 on the UK singles chart the same year.

"I Fought The Law" was written by Sonny Curtis of The Crickets. They recorded it in 1959 with Earl Sinks (vocal, rhythm guitar), Sonny Curtis (guitar), Joe Mauldin (bass, backing vocals) and Jerry Allison (drums, backing vocals). It was a track on their 1960 album "In Style with the Crickets". It was also the B-side of their single "A Sweet Love", neither of which was a hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

Bobby Fuller fist recorded the song in 1964 but it was a 1965 re-recorded version with Bobby Fuller (vocals, guitar), Randy Fuller (bass guitar, backing vocals), Jim Reese (guitar, backing vocals) and DeWayne Quirico (drums), that made the Top Ten on the Billboard Hot 100.

The death of Bobby Fuller has not yet had a conclusive verdict although the Los Angeles Police Department declared the death a suicide. He was found dead from asphyxiation in his mother's car near his home in Los Angeles, California, USA, on 18 July 1966. Theory's on his death range from Charles Manson to the LAPD and the Mafia.

9. In 1967 Merle Haggard claimed he threw something away. What is the missing item in the song "I Threw Away __________"?

Answer: The Rose

"I Threw Away The Rose", which is taken from the album "Branded Man", was a number two hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. In the lyrics Merle rues the bad choices he has made. Here's a snippet:

"And now I'm paying for the days of wine and roses
A victim of the drunken life I chose
Now all my social friends look down their noses
For I kept the wine and threw away the rose"

A lot of Merle's songs are about the demon drink, such as "The Bottle Let Me Down", "I'll Leave the Bottle On The Bar", "I Think I'll Just Stay Here and Drink", and "Drink Up and Be Somebody". While in his early twenties, Merle ended up in San Quentin jail and he claims that while there he managed to set up a kind of brewery. He also says that one of Johnny Cash's celebrated performances at San Quentin is what inspired him to become a singer, ergo setting him on the straight and narrow.

I don't know if there has ever been a song called "I Threw Away My Hermit Crab's Exoskeleton", but there should be.

10. Who had the original hit with the song "I Heard It Through The Grapevine"?

Answer: Gladys Knight & The Pips

"I Heard It Through The Grapevine" was a number two hit on the Billboard Hot 100 for Gladys Knight & The Pips in 1967. It peaked at number 47 on the UK singles chart the same year.

"I Heard It Through The Grapevine" was written by Norman Whitfield/Barrett Strong. It was first recorded by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles in 1966, then by Marvin Gaye in 1967. Both of these versions of the song were rejected as singles by Motown boss Berry Gordy.

Gladys Knight was born in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, in 1944. She won Ted Mack's Original Amateur Hour television show contest in 1952 at the age of seven. Gladys along with her brother Bubba, sister Brenda and their cousins William and Eleanor Guest, formed the singing group The Pips. They named the group after another cousin, James "Pip" Woods. Brenda Knight and Eleanor Guest left the group and were replaced with Langston George in 1959 and Edward Patten in 1963.
