Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. George Harrison wrote and was lead singer on this song by The Beatles. It was included in the 1965 movie and on the album "Help!". Will these lyrics help you to name the song title? "Said you had a thing or two to tell me How was I to know you would upset me? I didn't realise as I looked in your eyes... You told me"

Answer: I Need You

I hope this one was easy; there are so many great songs by The Beatles. In the film "Help!" The Beatles sang and recorded the song on Salisbury Plain in England. They were being protected by the British army as Clang (Leo McKern) and his thugs were preparing to attack them.

At the very end of the movie, when the boys are coming up to the camera and bowing down, if you listen you'll hear George say "'I Need You' by George Harrison", twice. I guess he wanted to be sure he received credit for his song. This is my personal favorite song from the film.

2. "I Melt With You" was a 1982 hit for which British new wave band?

Answer: Modern English

MTV and the movie "Valley Girl" helped this song gain popularity. A snippet of a remade version of it was even used in a jingle in a TV advertisement for Hershey chocolate, which gives it an entirely different meaning!

The band were formed in Colchester, Essex, England, in 1979 by Robbie Grey (vocals), Gary McDowell (guitar, vocals) and Michael Conroy (bass, vocals). Originally known as The Lepers they became Modern English and expanded when Richard Brown (drums) and Stephen Walker (keyboards) joined.

Although Modern English are British they have only had hits on the UK Indie chart. They have had a couple of minor hits on the Billboard Hot 100.

3. "I and I Survive" is a track on the ground-breaking album "Rock For Light" (1983) by which punk/reggae band from Washington, D.C?

Answer: Bad Brains

Bad Brains didn't start out as a hardcore punk band, and it might be argued that they are much more than that label leads one to believe, but the band's influence on the genre is undeniable. The album "Rock For Light" is quintessential high-octane, tight as a nut, blistering punk rock. Much of the material on the album had already been heard by those really in the know on Bad Brains' cassette-only release ("Bad Brains") on the seminal underground label ROIR, but for the masses the album was a revelation.

Bad Brains returned to the Rastafarian linguistic concept of "I and I" rather than "we" when they titled their 1986 album "I Against I". The album was a further ground-breaker with its infective blend of hardcore punk, heavy metal, reggae and even a touch of funk.

About the red herrings: none of them formed in Washington D.C, or even the USA. They did however all form in 1977, as did Bad Brains.

4. The Isley Brothers released the single "I'm Gonna Knock On Your Door" in 1969, but which teenager had already had a big hit with the song in 1961?

Answer: Eddie Hodges

The singer of this song told his girlfriend that he was going to "knock on your door, ring on your bell and tap on your window too", if she did not "come out tonight when the moon is bright". However, we never find out if she did go out. Maybe it was unrequited love.

Eddie Hodges was born in 1947 in Mississippi, US. As an actor he appeared on stage in "The Music Man". His first film was "A Hole in the Head" with Frank Sinatra. He went on to make several other films and guest-starred in numerous TV shows. He was only 14 years old when he recorded "I'm Gonna Knock On Your Door", which reached the top 20 in the U.S.A. He was drafted into the US Army during the 1960s. Upon discharge and disillusioned with Hollywood, he went back to his native Mississippi where he attended the University of Southern Mississippi. He later became a mental health counselor.

5. Del Shannon failed to interest The Searchers in his song "I Go To Pieces", so who did have a hit with it in 1965?

Answer: Peter and Gordon

"I Go To Pieces" peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 for Peter and Gordon in 1965. It did not chart in the UK

"I Go To Pieces" was written by Del Shannon for singer Lloyd Brown who could not get it released. Del Shannon also made a less than satisfactory attempt to record the song himself. While on tour in Australia in 1964 with The Searchers and Peter and Gordon, he played it to The Searchers but they were not interested in recording it. Peter and Gordon heard Del Shannon singing the song to The Searchers from their dressing room and asked if they could record the song.

"I Go To Pieces" was released in the UK but did not chart. Peter and Gordon's previous single, "I Don't Want To See You Again", had not charted in the UK even though it was the third single in a row written for them by Paul McCartney (although all three were credited to Lennon/McCartney.)

6. "I Feel Voxish" is on the sixth studio album (1983) by legendary Manchester band The Fall. What's the name of that album?

Answer: Perverted By Language

Only The Fall's front man Mark E Smith knows what "voxish" really means and although the brilliant imagery he conjures up in the lyrics gives us some clues, it would be hard to define. Here's a snippet of the aforementioned lyrics:

"A pillbox crisp, that French git
The spikes he left in the bathroom
And I never heard from him again
I feel voxish, stack-heeled Hari Krish
Those disgusting vegan new youth punks
Caught my life mould, give me silenced lectures"

"Perverted By Language" was one in a string of classic Fall albums from a period when the band couldn't put a foot wrong, despite minor shifts in the line-up. The album also included classic-to-be "Eat Y'self Fitter", a song which Fall fanatic John Peel claimed in his autobiography made him faint when he first heard it. As Mr Peel and many other music gourmets have pointed out, The Fall are the undisputed best band of all-time.

About the red herrings (all 1983): "Pyromania" is by Def Leppard, "The Final Cut" by Pink Floyd, and "Diamond Jack And The Queen Of Pain" by Kevin Ayers.

7. Which two-piece band consisting of a divorced husband and wife released "I Think I Smell A Rat" on their third studio album called "White Blood Cells" in 2001?

Answer: The White Stripes

Although The White Stripes have garnered a heap of praise for kick-starting the stagnant rock scene of the late 1990s/early 2000s, they were very much part of a scene, on a local, national, and arguably even trans-Atlantic level. They became the biggest name of a kind of lo-fi, back-to-the-roots, bluesy-rock 'n' roll revival which took the world by storm, and the album "White Blood Cells", which, by the way, was a shift away from the bluesy sound, was their breakthrough. Although this album (their third) is still endearingly maladroit, it's not quite as raw as the previous two and thus much more accessible.

The White Stripes split up after six studio albums, a very sensible decision since they avoided the cruel fate of becoming a parody of themselves. The couple had actually been divorced pretty much since the beginning (2000), but their relationship was something they eschewed talking about in public.

Neil Sedaka-penned "Love Will Keep Us Together" is probably married couple Captain & Tennille's best-known hit. The Carpenters were actually siblings, not man and wife. The Krankies are husband and wife, although in the Scottish comedy duo's act, Janette (the wife) is dressed up like a naughty schoolboy and Ian (husband) has to try and keep him/her out of trouble for his/her pranks. You can't beat British humour, can you?

8. The Jesus and Mary Chain released two contradictory singles in the 1990s, the first claiming "I Hate _____" and the second "I Love _____". What fills both gaps?

Answer: Rock 'n' Roll

"I Hate Rock 'n' Roll" is the title track on a 1995 compilation album by The Jesus and Mary Chain which gathered together B-sides and rarities. The oldest track on the album was from 1989, but "I Hate Rock 'n' Roll" was freshly recorded for it, undermining the concept of a compilation album with a revolutionary panache typical of the band. The track popped up again on the band's following album, "Munki" (1998), along with a more positive reworking of the track as "I Love Rock 'n' Roll". "Munki" was the band's last album before splitting up in 1999.

Interestingly, the lyrics to "I Hate Rock 'n' Roll" were written by William Reid whereas "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" was written by his brother Jim Reid. Both songs mention both the BBC and MTV; in the former version William says he loves the two TV companies, and in the latter Jim states he hates them.

About the red herrings: "Cheese and Crackers" is a classic Sun Records b-side recorded by Rosco Gordon in 1956. Dandelion and burdock is a thirst-quenching non-alcoholic beverage, and yin and yang is a concept in Chinese philosophy.

9. Which folk singer/singers had a hit with the song, "I Guess He'd Rather Be In Colorado"?

Answer: John Denver

"I Guess He'd Rather Be In Colorado" appears on the John Denver albums "Poems, Prayers And Promises" (1971), "The Wildlife Concert" (1995), and "The Harbor Lights Concert" (2002). It was written by Bill Danoff and his wife Mary 'Taffy' Nivert, who sang backing vocals on John Denver's breakout album "Poems, Prayers And Promises". They also wrote what became John Denver's signature tune and first hit on the Billboard Hot 100, "Take Me Home, Country Roads". Initially they had planned on selling the song to Johnny Cash, then John Denver heard it and wanted it for himself.

For some reason "I Guess He'd Rather Be In Colorado" has always reminded me of the '70s TV character "McCloud". Sam McCloud was played by Dennis Weaver, who was actually from New Mexico.

10. On the 1985 single from the album "Maverick" by George Thorogood and the Destroyers, what did George tell us about his drinking habits ? "I Drink ________"

Answer: Alone

"I Drink Alone" is one of the few songs actually written by George Thorogood on an album that includes cover versions of songs by Fats Domino, John Lee Hooker and Chuck Berry. George Thorogood and The Destroyers have etched out a pretty tidy career reworking classics of yesteryear, which has certainly brought a whole new audience to the blues and rock 'n' roll.

In the song "I Drink Alone" George lists his friends as being "good buddy Wiser, my pal Jack Daniel's and his partner Jimmy Beam, my pal Johnny Walker and his brothers Black and Red". It wasn't the first time the band had celebrated alcohol, in fact the debut album "George Thorogood and the Destroyers" (1977) featured "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" which was an adaptation of John Lee Hooker's adaptation of Amos Milburn's 1953 recording.
