Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Empress Maud (Matilda, the daughter of Henry I) was involved in a civil war for control of the throne. She managed to capture and imprison her rival, Stephen, in 1141 and take control of the kingdom. She did not call herself queen, choosing instead to be the 'Lady of the English'. Who was her husband when she had this brief control of the country?

Answer: Geoffrey of Anjou

Henry V was her first husband, who died in 1125. In 1128 she married Geoffrey of Anjou, and their son Henry became Henry II of England. Geoffrey and Maud did not have a particularly happy marriage; Geoffrey had problems with his barons in his lands in Anjou which prevented him from helping his wife in her quest to rule England.
2. The next queen also ruled for a very short time. Lady Jane Grey is known as the nine days' queen. Who was her husband?

Answer: Guilford Dudley

Guilford is also spelled with the -d-. Edward VI died in 1553 and his sister Mary was the next in line to the throne. However, she was a Catholic and some factions in England were not eager to see a Catholic ruler if they could find a Protestant one. Jane had been married to Guilford Dudley in 1553, and the influence of Dudley's father, the Duke of Northumberland, had been behind Edward VI's decision to name Jane Grey as his heir instead of his sisters Mary and Elizabeth.
3. Mary I (1553-1558) was famously married to the King of Spain in 1554. What was his name?

Answer: Philip

Mary's marriage to Philip II was not popular in England. They had no children and after Mary's death Philip was interested in marrying Elizabeth. Philip's first marriage was to Mary of Portugal; Mary Tudor was his second wife; he also married Princess Elisabeth of France and Anne, daughter of Emperor Maximilian II.
4. Elizabeth I never married, but plenty of suitors were suggested for her. Which of these was not one of them?

Answer: James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell

The Earl of Bothwell married Mary, Queen of Scots. The dukes of Anjou and Alencon were younger brothers of the King of France, and it seems likely that Elizabeth considered marrying one of them. Philip II considered marrying Elizabeth, but this would have been an unpopular alliance for her to make.
5. Mary II was the Queen from 1689-1694. Her husband was named as King on her insistence and they ruled together until her death. Which King of England was he?

Answer: William III

William of Orange was a Protestant, as was Mary. When James II had a son, William and Mary were invited to invade England by those who feared the return of a Catholic monarchy and they landed in Devon in November 1688. They came to power with very little bloodshed in what became known as the Glorious Revolution. William became King and ruled after Mary's death until 1702.
6. Queen Anne reigned from 1702-1714. From which country did her husband come?

Answer: Denmark

Prince George of Denmark married Anne in 1683. He became the Duke of Cumberland, but never the king. He died in 1708. He was deemed a suitable husband for Anne, as he was from a Protestant country. Anne and George had numerous children (the exact number is disputed, but she was pregnant eighteen times), most of whom were miscarried or stillborn. Only William, Duke of Gloucester, survived beyond a year; sadly he died at the age of 11.
7. Where did Queen Victoria marry her consort, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha?

Answer: The royal chapel of St. James

Victoria met Albert in 1836; they were both 17. They married in February 1840. At first they disagreed a lot, as Albert wanted to be involved in the government of the kingdom, but Victoria was not convinced that was a good idea, owing to the distrust of the British for her German husband. Finally they found a solution to this, whereby Albert helped Victoria, but not in an official capacity.

Their marriage was a very happy one after this.
8. In what year did Prince Albert die?

Answer: 1861

Albert was 42 when he died from typhoid. Victoria was devastated by his death, as she had adored him. She was to remain a widow for 40 years, and she wore mourning for him until she died in 1901.
9. The consort of Queen Elizabeth II was Prince Philip. What was the title by which he was best known?

Answer: Duke of Edinburgh

Prince Philip was also the Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich. The three titles were conferred upon him in 1947, by King George VI. He became a Prince of the United Kingdom in 1957. He was a Privy Counsellor, but other than that had no constitutional role. He was also a member of the House Of Lords.
10. Both Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip are direct descendents of Queen Victoria.

Answer: True

Elizabeth is a direct descendent of Queen Victoria's eldest son, King Edward VII. Prince Philip is directly descended from Princess Alice, Queen Victoria's third child.
