Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I crossed the Pyrenees when I was a very old lady. I did this to collect my granddaughter from Castile, who was to marry the heir of France. I have been Queen of France myself, as well as Queen of England. Which famous lady was I?

Answer: Eleanor of Aquitaine

In 1200 Eleanor of Aquitaine went to collect her granddaughter Urraca to marry prince Louis. Upon meeting Urraca's younger sister Blanche, she decided she was more fit to be queen of France and took her along instead.

She was right. Louis VIII died after reigning for only a few years and Blanche ably ruled France as regent for their son Louis IX.

Eleanor has been Queen of France through marriage to Louis VII and Queen of England through marriage to Henry II.
2. I was rarely parted from my husband and also joined him on a crusade. He grieved deeply when I died and erected famous crosses marking the resting places as my body was taken back to London. Who was I?

Answer: Eleanor of Castile

These are the famous Eleanor Crosses, erected by her mourning consort Edward I. She was not a very popular queen though, for she was good at collecting money.
3. I spend a lot of my time on charity and the construction of bridges and buildings. My mother was a saint and I am also remembered as 'the Good Queen". My daughter was of a different sort and warred with her cousin over the throne of England. Which queen was I?

I took my son with me to France and then invaded England with my lover. We deposed my husband and I ruled England with my lover for three years. Later I would be called a "She-Wolf." Which notorious queen was I?

Answer: Isabella of France

In 1327, Isabella and Roger Mortimer crossed into England from France to fight her husband Edward II. His armies deserted him and they took power in the name of Isabella's son Edward III. It is unclear what happened to Edward II after that, but recent studies argue that he might not have been killed in that same year after all.
