Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Hall might have gotten decked by bullies just while doing his job, as his job in the '80s largely involved playing geeky high schoolers in John Hughes films?

Answer: Anthony Michael Hall

Brat Pack member Anthony Michael Hall played 'nerd' roles in John Hughes' "Sixteen Candles" (1984), "Weird Science" (1985) and "The Breakfast Club" (1985). Prior to working with John Hughes and the other young stars of the Brat Pack, Hall made "National Lampoon's Vacation" (1983) with Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo.

He also joined the cast of "Saturday Night Live" for a brief time in the mid-'80s. To avoid being typecast as "the teen geek", after 1985 Hall turned down roles that Hughes wrote specifically for him, including the role of Duckie in "Pretty in Pink" (1986), a job that went to Jon Cryer, and the role of Cameron in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" (1986), a role that ended up being played by Alan Ruck, who was 30 years old when he played the high school senior.
2. Which Hall, who hosted a late night talk show from 1989 to 1994, might have been decked by Jay Leno, after saying on-air that he would "kick Jay's [butt]"?

Answer: Arsenio Hall

Arsenio Hall is an actor/comedian best known for his late night talk show. After hosting "The Late Show" in 1987, and performing well in the host role, Hall was offered his own show shortly afterwards. The comment about kicking Jay Leno's butt was made in reference to television ratings, after Leno landed the role of host of "The Tonight Show".

The two hosts had somewhat of a rivalry going, but patched things up after Hall's show ended. Arsenio Hall has since appeared on "The Tonight Show" and "The Jay Leno Show" several times.

In addition to his talk show, Hall has appeared in films such as "Harlem Nights" (1989) and "Coming to America" (1988). He is also active in the fight against HIV/AIDS and has filmed commercials designed to increase awareness about the disease.
3. Well, I don't think anyone decked this lady, but she was feisty and may have done some decking herself! Which of these best describes Emmeline "Nellie" Hall, who was born in Britain in 1895?

Answer: suffragette

Nellie Hall was a militant suffragette in England in the early 20th century. She was named for her godmother, Emmeline Pankhurst. Nellie's political beliefs were influenced by Mrs. Pankhurst, as well as by her own parents, including her mother, who was a founding member of the Women's Social and Political Union. Nellie was arrested and jailed twice; first in 1913 for throwing a brick through the Prime Minister's car; and again in 1914 for having concealed "window smashing equipment" in her home. During the First World War, Nellie worked as a mail sorter for the British Expeditionary Force, and later worked for Emmeline Pankhurst, until the older woman's death. Little is known about Nellie's life after she and her husband left Britain in 1929.
4. I certainly hope no one decked this woman - she was a gospel singer! Which of these musicians became a Hall when she married?

Answer: Danniebelle Jones

Danniebelle Jones was involved in music from a young age. She played the organ at her church when she was a child, and formed a gospel singing trio, The Jones Sisters, with her younger sisters. The next group she formed, much later in life, The Danniebelles, toured all over the globe and were involved with World Vision. She also performed and recorded with the gospel group Andraé Crouch and the Disciples, as well as on her own as a solo artist. Many of her solo recordings were bible passages set to music.

Danniebelle Jones married Charles E. Hall in 1956. She died in 2000.
5. An upset game show contestant might have decked this next Hall. Which of these Halls hosted a popular game show off and on from 1963 to 1991?

Answer: Monty Hall

Monty Hall, born Monte Halperin, was the long-time host of "Let's Make a Deal", a game show on which contestants were often offered modest prizes, and then had to decide whether or not to make a deal with the host in hopes of receiving a bigger prize. Sometimes, however, the contestant would end up with a "zonk", an undesirable joke prize, or a prize of much less value than what they were originally offered. "Let's Make a Deal" also involved more complicated deals, including deals where the customer would have to play mini-games, similar to those featured on "The Price is Right".

Monty Hall hosted the original version of "Let's Make a Deal", from 1963 to 1976, as well as the night-time syndicated version from 1971 to 1977. He also hosted in 1980-81, 1984-86, and 1990-91. "Let's Make a Deal" was revived in 2009, with Wayne Brady as the host.
6. Another young lady who hopefully hasn't been decked too much, this Hall is a relatively unknown actress. One of her more well-known roles is probably one from a Woody Allen movie, "Vicky Cristina Barcelona", in which she starred with Scarlett Johansson. Who is she?

Answer: Rebecca Hall

Rebecca Hall played Vicky in "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" (2008). For this role, she was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy. The film was about two friends who went to Spain on holiday and ended up in a mess of a 'relationship' with a Spaniard and his wife.

Rebecca Hall has also appeared in other films, such as "The Prestige" (2006) and "Frost/Nixon" (2008), as well as on stage in many productions since her debut in 2002. Her first stage role was in "Mrs. Warren's Profession" in London; it was a show directed by her father, Peter Hall.
7. The only reason this woman may have been decked could have been because of her lifestyle and somewhat controversial writings. Which Hall wrote "The Well of Loneliness"?

Answer: Radclyffe Hall

Born Marguerite Radclyffe-Hall, Radclyffe Hall was born in 1880 in England. She was a lesbian, and a self-described "congenital invert", a term used by sexologists to imply homosexuality and sexual inversion (males behaving femininely and vice versa). Radclyffe Hall sometimes went by the name of John, a nickname bestowed upon her by a lover, Mabel Batten. Most of Hall's adult life was spent in relationships with various women, and writing.

"The Well of Loneliness" (1928) was a somewhat autobiographical novel which, while not overtly obscene, nonetheless was the subject of an obscenity trial, after which all copies of the book were ordered destroyed. Subsequently, it was a long time before the book was published in the US. "The Well of Loneliness" was named number seven on The Publishing Triangle's list of the Top 100 Lesbian and Gay Novels (1999). Hall herself was named number 16 on a list of Top 500 Lesbian and Gay Heroes compiled by the gay and lesbian web-newsletter "The Pink Paper" (1997).
8. This Hall might also get decked on the job - he plays a killer who works for the police department on the TV show "Dexter". Who is he?

Answer: Michael C. Hall

Michael C. Hall has been playing the title role "Dexter" since the show's first season in 2006. The character Dexter Morgan is a blood spatter analyst who kills people on the side - people who somehow slipped through the cracks of the criminal justice system, and, in Dexter's mind, deserve to die.

Michael C. Hall has an extensive background in theatre - he has acted on stage in "MacBeth", "Cabaret", and "Chicago", among other productions. He also starred in the HBO series "Six Feet Under" from 2001-2005.
9. It's always possible that you'll get decked while in prison. This Hall may or may not know something about that. S/he is a transsexual Australian murderer. Which Hall fits the bill?

Answer: Maddison Hall

Maddison Hall was born Noel Crompton. He murdered a hitchhiker in New South Wales in 1987 and went to prison. A while later, he began hormone treatment, took the name Maddison Hall, was moved to a women's prison, but had to be transferred back to the men's prison after just a couple of months, following allegations of sexual relations with the female prisoners, including at least one incident of alleged rape.

This was an especially grievous allegation, because Hall is HIV positive. Hall underwent sexual reassignment surgery in prison in 2003.
10. I can't think of any reason why this Hall would have been decked, except perhaps by her siblings, Hamnet and Judith, when they were young. High school students may daydream of decking her father, when they are forced to read his plays. Who was the woman who became a Hall when she got married?

Answer: Susanna Shakespeare

Susanna was the eldest child of playwright William Shakespeare and his wife Anne Hathaway. Her exact date of birth is unknown, but she was baptised in 1593. She married John Hall in 1607. Hall was a respected physician, but historians have failed to find any proof that he actually had a medical degree or a license to practice. Elizabeth Barnard (nee Hall) was Susanna's only child, and William Shakespeare's only grandchild born in his lifetime (Judith had children after her father died). Susanna and her husband inherited the bulk of her father's estate when he died.
