Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Eva was born in Munich in 1912. As a young girl, she wanted to become what as soon as possible?

Answer: All of these

Eva would listen to American music, go to the movies, and sing all the time. She seemed to be concerned with nothing but herself. Her parents finally put her in a convent school. She was eventually thrown out for climbing the gates at night to drink with the local boys.
2. What type of work was Eva doing when she met Hitler?

Answer: Photographer's assistant

Eva was the secretary of Herr Hoffmann, one of Hitler's photographers. Later in the war Hitler had Hoffmann sent to the Russian front because he had negatives of some early Hitler photos which were not very flattering. Hoffmann survived, and made it home after the war. His family still runs a shop, and the negatives were found by his son.
3. What year did Eva and Hitler become an "item"?

Answer: 1932

Hitler moved Eva into a fancy Munich apartment soon after the suicide of his niece, Geli, with whom he had been in love with. (She had shot herself, apparnetly because of his lack of attention). He provided Eva with a car and driver, money, anything she wanted. He even made provision for her in his will.
4. When Hitler became head of the German government in 1933, Eva became known to the public as the equivalent of a "First Lady".

Answer: False

Hitler and Eva were never seen in public together. Very few outside his inner circle even knew who she even was. When the war ended, and the German people were informed Hitler had married, they did not believe it. Hitler had always said he had but one wife, Germany.
5. How many times did Eva try to kill herself over Hitler's lack of attention?

Answer: 2

In the mid thirties, she tried to shoot herself in the throat, but failed. In the late thirties she made a more serious attempt by taking an overdose of pills. She nearly died, and Hitler rushed to her side. He was with her for several weeks before again leaving her on her own.

They did not spend much time together as a couple after that until Eva moved into the Berlin bunker at the end of the war.
6. During the winter of 1941-42 what article of clothing did Eva refuse to donate to the Winter Relief Organization?

Answer: Fur Coats

Eva was asked to donate her fur coats for the soldiers in Russia, who did not have the proper clothing for the cold Russian winter. She refused. She felt that the soldiers would not want such nice furs in a "dirty" place. Besides that, "I need something nice to wear in the winter too". The furs (about 50 total) were put into storage and found by the American Army at the end of the war.
7. Eva was very athletic, and Hitler had several bronzes made of her. He felt she had the perfect Aryan body. However, one important feature was changed. What was it?

Answer: Head

Hitler had another head placed on the bronze casts. He was afraid that someone would see Eva and put two and two together. How Eva felt about this is not known.
8. Even with the war going on,what exotic food did Eva insist on trying to serve as much as possible?

Answer: Turtle soup

Turtle soup was her favorite food. When the supply ran out in 1943, she is said to have screamed and thrown pans at her cook. She did not understand why she could not get any.
9. Eva planned the wedding of her youngest sister to Hermann Fegelein, an officer with Hitler's personal staff. Fegelein was in his thirties, her sister was 16. What was her name?

Answer: Gretle

Gretle recieved a lavish wedding with Hitler as a witness. Many said it was "the wedding she [Eva] never had". In 1945, Gretle was pregnant and not in Berlin. Eva made sure she was safe, out of the way of advancing Russians. Hermann, still on duty at the bunker, disappeared one day. Hitler sent out troops to find him and bring him back.

He was found in bed with one of his girlfriends. On the table next to them was a bag full of gold, silver, and American money. Eva pleaded for his life to no avail. Hitler had him shot behind the bunker. Gretle survived the war, had a daughter, and never uttered the name of Hermann again.
10. Which woman did Eva fear the most in the inner circle of Nazis?

Answer: Magda Goebbels

Magda was the wife of Josef Goebbels. Hitler used her throughout the Third Reich as a model of the perfect German wife and mother. She stood in as a kind of "First Lady" many times when Hitler needed her. Eva hated the fact that Magda was doing what she felt was her job, but Hitler just brushed aside her fears. Magda killed her six youngest children and herself at the end of the war.

She wrote to her one surviving son saying that a world after Hitler and National Socialism wasn't worth living in.
