He became interested in climbing and was fortunate to be paired with Norgay, the most experienced Everest-climber at the time, when it was time to summit. Later in life, Hillary created the Himalayan Trust, a philanthropical organization that created schools and other services for people of Sherpa descent.

She won the Critics' Choice Television Awards Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2015 for her portrayal of Michelle Pierson in HBO's "Togetherness."

Though born in Germany, Thiel spent his formative years in Northern California, where he attended Stanford for both his undergraduate degree and his law school degree. In 1999, he co-founded PayPal, which provided a critical link between online buyers and sellers. It's been speculated that his interest in gaining New Zealand citizenship was to facilitate the purchase of a large swathe of land, on which he would build a self-sustaining estate to live on in case doomsday arrives.

Neil Finn has indicated that his mother's Irish-Catholicism was an influence on him, especially when it came to writing lyrics. He moved to London to become a professional guitarist and helped found Crowded House in 1984. Rob Hall was born in Christchurch and became an enthusiastic climber at a young age. He was part of a small group of people who climbed the Seven Summits in seven months. He established Adventure Consultants in 1992 to guide others in their attempts to reach the top of Everest. Known for his dedication to safety, he was highly praised by his peers. A freak, sudden storm in 1994 caused so many deaths, including his own.

It was also the name of her autobiography.
