Mrs Thatcher was born on 13 October 1925 in Grantham and died on 8 April 2013. She was elected leader of the Conservative Party in 1975 and became the UK's first female Prime Minister in 1979. She was the only British Prime Minister in the 20th century to be elected for three successive terms, finally resigning in 1990 and letting John Major take over. During her time as Prime Minister she became known as the 'Iron Lady'.

Newton was born on Christmas Day 1642 near Grantham. He is best known for his study of physics and the laws of gravity. He also invented the first reflecting telescope. He was the first man to be knighted for scientific work, receiving this honour from Queen Anne in 1705.

Captain John Smith was born in 1580 in Willoughby. By the age of 24 he had served in the Dutch Wars and in the Near East and escaped Turkish captors. He became interested in the Virginia Company and wanted to be one of the first settlers in 1606. He moved to North America, established colonies and became Governor of Virginia, later returning to England pennyless to be a writer.

Smith died in London in June 1631. In the 1995 movie, Smith was voiced by Mel Gibson. The movie tells the story of Smith's adventures in America and creates a fictional romance with Pocahontas. In reality once married she once visited him in England following their meeting in the USA.
