She wrote her diary from 1942-1944 while she and her family were in hiding. She died in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp only months before WWII ended. The whole family were sent to concentration camps with her father Otto, the only survivor. Her found her diary and the book was published in 1947 titled "The Diary of a Young Girl".

She remained in politics until her assassination in 2007.
