Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Lovely Bones"
Answer: Stanley Tucci
Stanley Tucci is an American actor who has been performing on TV and in movie roles since 1985 (in a small role in "Prizzi's Honor"). His big 'break-out' role may have been in the 1996 bittersweet comedy "Big Night" with Tony Shaloub, about Italian immigrant brothers who open a restaurant in New Jersey. Tucci won an Emmy Award for his portrayal of Walter Winchell in "Winchell" in 1998, and for Outstanding Guest Actor on "Monk" in 2007.
He played George Harvey in the poignant film "The Lovely Bones" in 2009 and was nominated for an Academy Award.
2. "The Round Mound of Rebound"
Answer: Charles Barkley
"The Round Mound of Rebound" and "Sir Charles" are just a couple of nicknames for retired NBA basketball player and current broadcaster Charles Barkley. From 1984 through 2000, Barkley played power forward for the Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns and Houston Rockets.
He was voted to appear in 11 NBA All-Star Games and was MVP in 1991. Barkley is a two-time inductee into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, once for his individual career (in 2006) and once as a member of the Olympic "Dream Team" (in 2010).
3. Jorge Mario Bergoglio
Answer: Pope Francis
My own name for Pope Francis is 'the divine Argentine' (catchy, eh?), but his given name is Jorge Mario Bergoglio. In March 2013 Pope Francis was named 266th pope of the Roman Catholic Church. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1936, he is the first pope from the Americas. Senor Bergolio took his papal name after St. Francis of Assisi.
He is a humble and outspoken representative for the poor and disenfranchised of the world and has been active in his support for the environment and in the political arena as well.
In December 2013, Pope Francis was named 'Person of the Year' by "Time" magazine.
4. United States Senator
Answer: Cory Booker
Having been born in Washington, D.C., Cory Booker may have been predestined for a career in politics. From 2006 to 2013 he served as Mayor of Newark, New Jersey. He gained a national reputation for his personal involvement in public service, reducing crime and helping to stimulate the local economy.
He was also one of the first prominent politicians to make use of social media tools to help him connect with his constituents. He became a candidate for the United States Senate in a special election in 2013 to succeed Senator Frank Lautenberg.
After winning the primary and in the general election, Booker became the first Black senator from New Jersey.
5. 'Mini-Me'
Answer: Verne Troyer
One of Verne Troyer's most outstanding characteristics is his height; at 2 ft 8 in, Troyer is one of the shortest men in the world. His stature is the result of cartilage-hair hypoplasia dwarfism. It seems he hasn't let his size slow him down any, having appeared in some thirty films since 1994, from "Baby's Day Out" to "Gnome Alone".
His best known role is, perhaps, 'Mini-Me' from the "Austin Powers" franchise, beginning in 1999 with "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me".
6. "Half-Baked"
Answer: Dave Chappelle
Dave Chappelle is a stand-up comedian and actor. His screen debut came in 1993 when he played the character of Ahchoo in the Mel Brooks' comedy "Robin Hood: Men in Tights". Since that time Chappelle has had major supporting roles (is that an oxymoron?) in movies such as "The Nutty Professor", "Con-Air" and "Blue Streak".
In 1998 Dave co-wrote and starred in the stoner film "Half Baked" where he plays a janitor at a pharmaceutical lab who, with his 'crew', has to try to raise bail for a friend arrested for killing a NYPD horse by feeding it too much junk food .... bring snacks!
7. Halliburton
Answer: Dick Cheney
Duck, er ... Dick Cheney may be remembered as being the 46th Vice President of the United States under President George W. Bush from 2001-2009. He has had a long history in politics, beginning in 1975 when he became the seventh White House Chief of Staff under President Ford. From there he went on to the House of Representatives as a representative from Wyoming, to House Minority Whip, to US Secretary of Defense (1989-1993) before becoming Vice President.
However, that does not cover his career as a successful businessman; from 1995 to 2000, Cheney served as Chairman and CEO of Halliburton, a Fortune 500 company.
8. Krishna Bhanji
Answer: Ben Kingsley
Did you know that actor Ben Kingsley was born Krishna Bhanji in Snainton, near Scarborough, England? In his 40 years as a thespian he has won an Oscar, Grammy, BAFTA, Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Award. He may be best known for his wonderful portrayal of Mohandas Gandhi in the 1982 award winning film "Gandhi", directed by Richard Attenborough.
In 1983 he received a Best Actor Academy Award for his role. Some of his other films include "Schindler's List" (1993), "Sexy Beast" (2000) and "Hugo" (2011).
9. "Real Life: Preparing for the 7 Most Challenging Days of Your Life"
Answer: Dr. Phil McGraw
Phillip Calvin McGraw is an American psychologist, author and host of the popular daytime talk show "Dr. Phil", which debuted in 2002. He began his TV career as a resident expert on human behavior on Oprah Winfrey's daily talk show. McGraw parlayed that into hosting his own show which became the #1 daytime talk show, and has been airing for more than a decade.
He maintains his credibility by dealing with authentic issues in a blunt (yet gentle) manner. He may be the most well-known mental health professional in the world. Phil is also a best selling author with books like "Real Life", published in 2008, which provides a strategy for dealing with life's biggest crises.
10. The Who
Answer: Pete Townshend
British musician, singer and songwriter Peter Dennis Blanford Townshend is the lead guitarist and songwriter for The Who, a group formed way back in 1964. The Who originally consisted of lead singer Roger Daltrey, Keith Moon, John Entwistle and Townshend.
They are responsible for the 1969 rock musical "Tommy" about a blind "pinball wizard", and are known to be one of the most influential bands of the 20th century. In concert, Townshend was also known for his showmanship/histrionics which gave us gimmicks, jumps, 'the windmill' and other stunts with guitars, including destroying instruments at the end of the concert.
