Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I began my day with a (Kevin) Bacon roll. In which 2003 film did he star as Sean Devine alongside Sean Penn and Tim Robbins?

Answer: Mystic River

'Mystic River' was directed by Clint Eastwood and told the story of three childhood friends and their later lives. Kevin Bacon played the role of a police detective in the film. His other films include 'Apollo 13' (1995), 'Footloose' (1984) and 'Frost/Nixon' (2008). Bacon's name has become indelibly associated with the game 'Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon', where an actor is linked to him via film roles. During 2012 and 2013 he appeared regularly on British television in a series of advertisements for EE Mobile.

All the films listed were directed by Eastwood.
2. I also drank a glass of (Jason) Orange juice. With which 1990s boy band did Jason find fame?

Answer: Take That

Take That formed in 1989, brought together as the creation of their manager, Nigel Martin-Smith. The mainstay was the singer/songwriter Gary Barlow, with the band originally including Robbie Williams, Howard Donald and Mark Owen, as well as Jason. After success with hits including 'Pray' and 'Babe', both in 1993, and 'Back for Good' (1995) the band split up in 1996 (Williams having left previously). Orange then pursued a solo career, including some acting work, before rejoining Take That when the band re-formed in 2005.

All the options began as boy bands - Westlife and Boyzone in Ireland and The Backstreet Boys in America. Take That were formed in England.
3. My mid morning snack was accompanied by a cup of coffee, with (Harvey) Milk. Although he was born in New York, Milk's political career was based in which state?

Answer: California

Milk began life in Long Island, New York, and joined the US Navy where he worked on submarines and as a diving instructor. He took on various jobs, including insurance and teaching, while keeping his homosexuality secret. Milk moved to San Francisco, which had a large gay population, and turned his attention to politics, having revealed his sexual orientation.

He became a member of the Board of Supervisors, a local government body, and campaigned for gay rights. He was shot dead by a former work colleague, along with the mayor of San Francisco, George Moscone, in 1978. Milk's story was dramatised in the 2008 film 'Milk', which starred Sean Penn.
4. Lunch consisted of toast with a topping supplied by actor Sean, Judge Roy and golfer Andy. What completed my meal?

Answer: Beans

That good old standby - beans on toast. The British actor Sean Bean has appeared in many films, including 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy in the early 2000s and portrayed Odysseus in 'Troy' (2004). Television appearances include the role of Richard Sharpe in numerous adaptations of the novels by Bernard Cornwell and Eddard Stark in 'Game of Thrones' (2011). Judge Roy Bean was a Justice of the Peace in the days of the 'wild west' and has been portrayed many times on both television and in films. Andy Bean became a professional golfer in 1975 with his best results of the twentieth century in the Majors being second places at the Open in 1983 and the PGA in both 1980 and 1989.
5. To complete my lunch I had another coffee, with (Lord Alan) Sugar. He began appearing in which reality television series in 2005?

Answer: The Apprentice

The British version of 'The Apprentice' (fronted by Donald Trump in the American show) was first shown in 2005. When the series began, Alan Sugar was Sir Alan Sugar, having been made a knight in 2000. He became Lord Sugar in 2009. Sugar began the company named for him, 'Amstrad' (from A M Sugar Trading) in 1968, specialising in electronics and computers and sold it to BSkyB, the broadcasting company, in 2007.
6. My main meal consisted of (Allan) Lamb cooked with the English actor from the 'Rocky Horror Picture Show'. What was his last name?

Answer: Curry

Allan Lamb was a cricketer who played for England from 1982 until 1992 and made a good basis for a lamb curry when mixed with actor Tim. I considered the politician Edwina, but her name is spelled Currie. Tim Curry created the role of Frank N. Furter in the stage production of the 'Rocky Horror Show' and appeared in both the London and Los Angeles versions. It was filmed in 1975, with a slight addition to the title, and has become a cult classic. Tim has appeared in many films since including 'Legend' (1985) and 'Charlie's Angels' (2000).

Of the other options, I could have picked English cricketer Phil Mustard, television presenter Alice Beer or comedian Jasper Carrott.
7. The perfect accompaniment to my main meal was some rice. I was spoilt for choice, with Anne, Jerry, Anneka, Clive, Pat and Tim all qualifying. Which of them wrote the book I'm reading at the same time?

Answer: Anne

Anne Rice was born in New Orleans in 1941 and among her best known works are 'The Vampire Chronicles' series, the first of which was published in 1976. She has also written Christian works including 'Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt' (2005) and published works written using her pen names of Anne Rampling and A.N. Roquelaure.

The other names listed were an American football player, Jerry, Pat, an Irish soccer player and Tim, who wrote the lyrics for the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber for many of their musicals, such as 'Evita'. Anneka was a British television presenter and Clive played cricket for South Africa.
8. I finished with a fruit salad, which included some peaches. The young lady born in 1989 and given the first name of Peaches was the second daughter of which singer?

Answer: Bob Geldof

Her mother was the late Paula Yates and her full name is Peaches Honeyblossom Geldof. Her older sister is Fifi Trixibelle and her younger sister is Little Pixie. Peaches has worked as a journalist and television broadcaster and has continued the family tradition of unusual (I'm being polite here) names by calling her first two children Astala Dylan Willow and Phaedra Bloom Forever. They are both boys, incidentally.

Other candidates for the fruit salad were Daryl Strawberry, Fiona Apple, Neneh Cherry and Halle Berry. Jack Lemmon would have been less welcome.

The people listed have only their Irish nationality in common.
9. To complement my meal, I drank a glass of (Sir Alec) Guinness. For which 1957 film did he win an Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Colonel Nicholson?

Answer: The Bridge on the River Kwai

Sir Alec Guinness appeared in all the listed films, but he won his Oscar for 'The Bridge on the River Kwai'. This was his only win, despite other nominations, although he did receive an Honorary Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1980. Directed by David Lean, 'The Bridge on the River Kwai' was the story of a group of prisoners of war forced to build a bridge by their Japanese captors. Guinness's character becomes obsessed by the idea of building a perfect bridge as a testament to British skill, with tragic consequences.

The film won seven Oscars in all, including Best Film and Best Director.
10. My day was completed by a treat of jelly beans, fruit gums and M & Ms. Which Canadian born actor's name could be used as a generic name for these items?

Answer: Candy

Of course, being British I would normally refer to these treats as sweets, not candy, which is the American name. John Candy was a comedian and comic actor who died from a heart attack at the young age of forty-three, in 1994. Among his many film credits are 'Cool Runnings' (1993), 'Home Alone' (1990) and 'The Blues Brothers' (1980).

His final film was released after his death, in 1995, and was called 'Canadian Bacon' - which brings us neatly back to question one of the quiz.
