Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Princess Alexandra of Denmark (March 10th, 1863)

Answer: Prince Albert Edward

Princess Alexandra, the eldest daughter of King Christian IX of Denmark, married Prince Albert Edward, the eldest son of Queen Victoria, at St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle in 1863. As the heir to the throne, he held the title of Prince of Wales and therefore she was known as the Princess of Wales after the marriage.

They held these titles for nearly 40 years until he ascended to the throne as King Edward VII in 1901 and she became Queen Alexandra. However, her early life was a stark contrast to this grandeur - she was eight years old when her father was declared heir to the Danish throne and prior to him becoming king, the family lived on a relatively small income in modest 'palaces' that were more like family houses than her eventual home at Buckingham Palace.
2. Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augstenburg (July 5th, 1866)

Answer: Princess Helena

Princess Helena was the third daughter of Queen Victoria and was 15 years old when her father, Prince Albert, died in 1861. After that, Victoria relied heavily on her remaining unmarried daughters and had no wish to see them move abroad if they married foreign royalty - who were, at that time, the only acceptable potential spouses for British princes and princesses.

However, Victoria eventually managed to dig up an obscure German prince who didn't mind moving to England and living under the scrutiny of probably the most daunting mother-in-law in Europe. Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein was 15 years older than Helena and an unpopular choice with several members of her family (particularly her sister-in-law, the Princess of Wales) because of the wars between Denmark and Prussia over the ownership of Schleswig-Holstein.
3. John Campbell, Marquess of Lorne (March 21st, 1871)

Answer: Princess Louise

By 1870, Queen Victoria had changed her mind about the suitability of non-royalty as spouses for her children, and her fourth daughter (and sixth child), Princess Louise, became engaged to the Marquess of Lorne and married him at St. George's Chapel the following year.

The Marquess became the first member of the British nobility to marry a British princess since the Duke of Suffolk married the sister of King Henry VIII in 1515. The couple spent five years living in Canada when Lorne was appointed to the position of Governor General of Canada and the Province of Alberta, Lake Louise and Mount Alberta was all named in her honour - her full name at birth being Princess Louise Caroline Alberta.

The couple's marriage was not particularly successful; the couple often lived apart after their return to England in 1883 and were unable to have children.

In 1900, Lorne succeeded his father as Duke of Argyll, so, in later life, Princess Louise was also known as the Duchess of Argyll.
4. Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia (March 13th, 1879)

Answer: Prince Arthur

Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia, born in Potsdam in 1860, was the daughter of Prince Friedrich Karl of Prussia. She was actually baptised as Princess Luise Margarete Alexandra Victoria Agnes, but was generally known by the just her first two names, which were later anglicised to Louise Margaret.

The husband that she married in St. George's Chapel was Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, the third son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Later in their married life, from 1911 to 1916, the couple also spent time in Canada; Arthur as Governor General and his wife as the Viceregal consort.

They had three children together and their descendants include monarchs of both Sweden and Denmark. Princess Louise Margaret died in 1917 and became the first member of the royal family to be cremated. Prince Arthur died in 1942.
5. Princess Helena of Waldeck-Pyrmont (April 27th, 1882)

Answer: Prince Leopold

Prince Leopold was the youngest son of Queen Victoria and is remembered for suffering from haemophilia, a disease that was passed down to a number of Queen Victoria's descendants. He was granted the title of Duke of Albany in 1881 and the following year married Princess Helena of Waldeck-Pyrmont (a small principality in central Germany).

As might be expected given his medical condition, their marriage turned out to be short. In fact, it lasted less than two years as he died in March 1884 following a fall at his villa in Cannes, in the south of France, aged 30.

The couple had a young daughter together and the Duchess of Albany was pregnant at the time of her husband's death. She gave birth to a son four months later who inherited his father's titles but was later stripped of them (and his HRH status) for fighting for Germany in the First World War.

Helena never remarried and died in 1922 at the age of 61.
6. Prince Alexander of Teck (February 10th, 1904)

Answer: Princess Alice

For once, this royal wedding at St. George's Chapel did not involve any of the offspring of Queen Victoria. Princess Alice of Albany, the only daughter of Prince Leopold and Princess Helena, married Prince Alexander of Teck in the same building as her parents had got married 22 years earlier.

The prince was the brother of the future Queen Mary (wife of King George V). After the outbreak of the First World War, all members of the British royal family gave up their German titles and were granted new, more English-sounding, ones. Alexander and Alice took the surname Cambridge and became the Earl and Countess of Athlone.

The earl held various diplomatic posts, including Governor General of both South Africa and Canada, so Princess Alice was yet another female British royal to be the viceregal consort of Canada.

The earl died in 1957; Princess Alice lived until 1981, was the last surviving grandchild of Queen Victoria and set a new record for the longest-lived British princess by birth.
7. Prince Gustaf Adolf of Sweden (June 15th, 1905)

Answer: Princess Margaret

The Princess Margaret in question here was not the sister of Queen Elizabeth II, but one of the many granddaughters of Queen Victoria. She was styled Princess Margaret of Connaught and was the elder of the two daughters of Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn.

She also followed in her parents' footsteps when she walked down the aisle of St. George's Chapel after marrying the then Prince Gustaf Adolf of Sweden in 1905. Two years later she became the Crown Princess of Sweden when her husband became first-in-line to the Swedish throne upon the death of his grandfather.

However, while he went on to become King Gustaf VI Adolf in 1950, Margaret never became his queen as she had died in 1920 at the age of 38, while eight months pregnant with her sixth child.
8. Sophie Rhys Jones (June 19th, 1999)

Answer: Prince Edward

The last royal wedding of the 20th century took place at St. George's Chapel and was a very different sort of affair from the royal weddings of the early part of the century. It was the marriage of Prince Edward, the youngest child of Queen Elizabeth II, and Sophie Rhys Jones and took place in 1999.

The Queen granted Prince Edward the title of Earl of Wessex shortly before the wedding, which was a somewhat surprising move given that royal princes traditionally received dukedoms rather than a lesser-ranking title.

The more modern feel of the wedding was also reflected by the occupations of the happy couple - the bride was a PR executive, while the groom, despite (or perhaps because of) his royal connections, ran a television production company.
9. Camilla Parker Bowles (April 9th, 2005)

Answer: Prince Charles

Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, did not actually marry Camilla Parker Bowles at St. George's Chapel, but the couple did have their marriage blessed there, shortly after a civil ceremony at Windsor Guildhall. Both the bride and groom had been previously married and divorced - Prince Charles famously married Lady Diana Spencer, the mother of his two sons, at St. Paul's Cathedral in 1981 and Camilla Shand (as she was then) married Andrew Parker Bowles in 1973.

However, the couple had previously dated each other prior to Camilla's first marriage and their subsequent extra-marital affair became public knowledge when a biography of Diana by Andrew Morton was published in 1992. From 2005 to 2022, Camilla was known by the title Duchess of Cornwall - one of Prince Charles' subsidiary titles - rather than using the title of Princess of Wales that had become so closely associated with her popular predecessor.

She then became the Queen Consort following her husband's accession to the throne as King Charles III.
10. Meghan Markle (May 19th, 2018)

Answer: Prince Harry

Prince Harry - or Prince Henry Charles Albert David, to give his full name - was born in 1984 and is the second son of Prince Charles and the late Diana, Princess of Wales. His marriage in May 2018 to the American actress (Rachel) Meghan Markle was the first actual royal wedding (involving a prince or princess) of the 21st century to take place at the 14th century St. George's Chapel. Meghan was born in Los Angeles in 1981 and - prior to her engagement to a British prince - was best known for appearing in the hit drama series 'Suits'.

The wedding ceremony proved to be a unique mix of British and American culture, with all the pomp and circumstance of a royal event, mixed with a rousing address by an American bishop and the performance of Ben E. King's 'Stand By Me' by a gospel choir. Prior to the ceremony, the Queen granted Prince Harry the titles of Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton and Baron Kilkeel.
