Answer: gunshot

Gandhi famously protested against British rule in India by employing non-violent means. His life was made into a movie in 1982 starring Ben Kingsley. Sadly, he was assassinated in 1948 by Nathuram Godse, a right-wing Hindu Nationalist.

Marvin Gaye was a singer and songwriter, perhaps best known for "I Heard it Through the Grapevine". In 1984, he was fatally shot by his own father after a family dispute just one day before his 45th birthday.

Phil Hartman was a comedian and actor who appeared in dozens theatrical movie comedies and TV shows and also known for his voice-over work. He was shot by his wife, Brynn, after they had allegedly argued earlier about her drug use. He was 49.
2. Natalie Wood, Orville Redenbacher, Joe Flynn

Answer: drowned

Wood started as a child star and as an adult, was nominated and won several entertainment awards. Some of her movies were "Splendor in the Grass", "West Side Story" and "Rebel Without a Cause". While on a yacht with fellow actors Robert Wagner and Christopher Walken, she fell overboard and drowned.

Redenbacher was most known for his popcorn franchise for which he also filmed commercials. He was found dead in his bathroom at age 88. An autopsy revealed he had drowned in his Jacuzzi after experiencing heart problems.

Joe Flynn was an actor that appeared in theatrical movies and on TV, usually as stuffy, authoritarian characters. He is perhaps best know for his portrayal of the easily aggravated Naval officer, Captain Binghamton, on the popular 60s sit-com, "McHale's Navy". In 1974 he was discovered in his swimming pool, the victim of apparent drowning.
3. Ray Combs, Robin Williams, Tom Dula

Combs was a stand-up comic and game show host, most notably on "Family Feud". After being fired from the show and experiencing other career and financial setbacks and health issues, he hanged himself with bed sheets in his home in 1996. He was 40.

Williams was a popular actor with a wide range of portrayals from comic to dramatic. He appeared on TV as the friendly alien, Mork, in the series "Mork and Mindy", and in dozens of theatrical movies. He won many entertainment awards including an Academy Award for his role in "Good Will Hunting". He was treated for alcoholism, but finally hanged himself in his home in 2014 at age 63.

Tom Dula lived in western North Carolina and was a veteran of the Civil War. On flimsy evidence, he was convicted of murdering Laura Foster and executed by hanging in 1888 at age 22. His story was made into a highly fictionalized song "Hang Down Your Head, Tom Dooley" sung by the Kingston Trio. A more realistic version of his story was written by Sharyn McCrumb entitled "The Ballad of Tom Dooley: A Novel".
4. Charles Boyer, Truman Capote, George Sanders

Answer: drug overdose

Boyer was a French-born dramatic movie actor, playing mainly suave, Continental characters and nominated four times for an Academy Award. Days after his wife passed, he died from an overdose of Seconal. He was just two days shy of his 79th birthday.

Capote was a writer and suffered a traumatic childhood, and was frequently passed around among various relatives. He lived a flamboyant adult life. He is perhaps best known for his novels "In Cold Blood" and "Breakfast at Tiffany's". His life was made into a 2005 movie starring Philip Seymour Hoffman. He passed away from multiple drug intoxication at the home of Johnny Carson's ex-wife, Joanne.

Sanders, although considered British, was actually born in Russia. He appeared in dozens of films, usually as a suave villain. His only Oscar was for his role in "All About Eve". In 1958 he also sang on a record album of romantic music; some songs he composed himself. Later in life, he suffered declining health, dementia and a stroke. In 1972 and severely depressed, he succumbed after swallowing five bottles of Nembutal.
5. Stevie Ray Vaughan, Rick Nelson, Jim Reeves

Answer: aircraft accidents

Vaughan was a musician (guitar), songwriter and vocalist and won several music awards. In August 1990, Vaughan was on tour and anxious to travel to Chicago. He boarded a helicopter in Wisconsin which crashed just after taking off. He and three others on board were killed.

Nelson, another singer and musician, was killed in a plane crash on New Year's Eve 1985. He was the son of musical celebrity parents, Ozzie Nelson and Harriet Hilliard, with whom he appeared in their long-running TV sit-com. Some of his hits were "Dream Lover", "Garden Party" and "Fools Rush In".

Jim Reeves was a country western singer/songwriter known for "Am I That Easy to Forget", "Nobody's Fool" and "Welcome to My World" among many others. He was piloting a private plane when it crashed during a severe storm over Brentwood, TN in 1964.
6. Linda Darnell, Jack Cassidy, Teresa Graves

Answer: as a result of a fire

Darnell was an actress who started out as a child actor then a model. She appeared in "The Song of Bernadette", "My Darling Clementine" and "Forever Amber" and often portrayed exotic beauties. She also made guest appearances in several TV shows. In 1965, she succumbed to burns she received in a fire at the home of her secretary.

Cassidy was an actor with a broad style that allowed him to pursue roles from comic to dramatic from stage to movies, but mostly guest roles in many TV shows. He was the father of actors Patrick, Shaun and David Cassidy. It is alleged that he suffered form alcoholism and was a heavy smoker. He died in a fire in his apartment in December 1976 after falling asleep and dropping a lighted cigarette on the couch. He was 49.

Graves started out as a vocalist with The Doodletown Pipers after which she became a regular on the popular skit comedy show "Rowan and Martin's Laugh In". This led to her own starring role in the TV crime drama "Get Christie Love". She died shortly after being found in her home when it caught fire in 2002.
7. Tommy Dorsey, Tennessee Williams, Attila the Hun

Answer: choking

Dorsey was one of the most popular big band leaders of the 1930s and 40s. Some of his big hits were "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You", "I'll Never Smile Again" and "Marie". He even appeared in a few movie musicals. In 1956, just a week before he turned 51, he had been taking heavy doses of sedatives and choked on aspirated food in his sleep after eating a large meal.

Williams was a playwright and most known for "A Streetcar Named Desire", "The Glass Menagerie" and "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" many of which reflected his life experiences in America's deep South. In 1983, he was found dead in his hotel suite. An autopsy revealed he had likely choked on a cap from a medicine bottle.

Attila was a fifth century conqueror of much of eastern and northern Europe. In 453 A.D., he was found dead with blood in his mouth. A consensus of opinion was that he suffered some internal bleeding in his airway or esophagus and choked on the effusion of blood.
8. Ernie Kovacs, Jackson Pollock, Steve Allen

Answer: car accident

Kovacs was a comedian and actor. He also had an eponymous TV variety show and guest stared on many game shows, TV specials and a handful of movies. His innovative style was the inspiration for many of today's comics. In 1962, just 10 days before his 43rd birthday, he lost control of his car on a rain-slick highway and was killed in the ensuing crash.

Pollock, also pejoratively called "Jack the Dripper" was known for his unique painting style of letting paint drizzle from a brush as he moved it over a horizontal canvas. He was also known for his volatile personality and alcohol consumption. His life was dramatized in the 2000 movie "Jackson Pollock: An American Saga" which was directed by and starred Ed Harris. He died in a single car crash while driving intoxicated. One other passenger was killed and two others survived. He was 44 years old.

Allen was an entertainment personality, musician and songwriter. It is alleged he wrote more than 8,500 songs. He was the first emcee of "The Tonight Show" and portrayed bandleader Benny Goodman in a 1950s biopic movie. In the early 1980's he wrote, produced and hosted the intellectual TV series "Meeting of Minds" where costumed actors portrayed historical figures who would discuss past and current social issues as an informal panel. He passed away at the home of his son in October 2000. At first it was though he had suffered a heart attack, but the autopsy revealed he had actually succumbed to a broken blood vessel sustained in a traffic accident earlier that day.
9. Robert Culp, Kurt Vonnegut, Ronald Neame

Answer: falling

Culp was an actor appearing in movies and TV. He portrayed Ensign Barney Ross in the 1962 movie "PT 109" and guested in dozens of TV shows and as agent Kelly Robinson in the TV espionage series "I Spy". A consensus of opinion was that Culp died as a result of a fall he sustained after experiencing cardiac problems while walking in Runyon Canyon in 2010.

Vonnegut was a writer and penned dozens of novels, plays, short stories and even a few non-fiction works. Some of his works include "Breakfast of Champions", "Slaughterhouse-Five" and "Deadeye Dick". He passed in 2007 from injuries he had incurred from a fall in his home in Manhattan.

Neame was a British-born movie director, screenwriter, producer and cinematographer. He received an Oscar nomination for his special effects in the film "One of Our Aircraft is Missing". Some if his directing achievements include "Scrooge", "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" and "The Poseidon Adventure". In 2017, Neame sustained a broken leg from a fall and never recovered from it even after two surgical procedures. He was 99 years old.
10. Michael Kennedy, Natasha Richardson, Sonny Bono

Answer: skiing accident

Kennedy was the son of Robert Kennedy. He was 10 years old when his father was assassinated. He had a turbulent personal life, accused of rape by a babysitter and subsequently was divorced from his wife. In December 1997, he died after hitting a tree while skiing in Aspen, Colorado. He was 39 years old.

Richardson was an actress and daughter of actress Vanessa Redgrave. She worked on the stage, in movies and on TV. In 1998, she won a Tony Award for her role of Sally Bowles in "Cabaret". She died at age 45 after hitting her head while taking a skiing lesson.

Bono, with his wife at the time, Cher, formed a popular singing duo and had an eponymous TV variety show which aired from 1971 to 1974. After separating from Cher, he continued as an entertainer mainly as a guest star in TV shows. He then turned to politics and was elected mayor of Palm Springs in 1988, and in 1994 was elected to the U.S. Congress. He was still serving his Congressional term when he died in a skiing accident in Lake Tahoe, California in 1998 at age 62.
