Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My name is Princess Marguerite Capet of France. I am the daughter of King Louis VII Capet of France and Princess Constance de Bourgogne of Castile and Leon. Although my husband was technically the king of England he was, however, crowned while his father was still alive and does not really count as a king. Who is my husband?

Answer: King Henry, the Young King of England

The young king was the eldest son of King Henry II and Queen Eleanor of England. Princess Marguerite was considered quite a catch, as she was the daughter of Eleanor's ex-husband, Louis VII of France. They were married on 2 November 1160 in Neubourg, Normandy, France when the prince was five and she was two.

However, the marriage was not consummated for many years and their only child was born on 19 June 1177 in Paris, France. Unfortunately he died barely three days later. The young king died, before his father, on 11 June 1183 in Martel Castle, Turenne, France. Marguerite, on the other hand, was married off to King Bela III of Hungary, with whom she had at least one child; King Andrew II.

She died in 1198 in Acre, Palestine.
2. I am Countess Joan Plantangenet of Kent and I was married to the Black Prince of Wales. I bore him two children, before his early death. Which king am I descended from?

Answer: Edward I

The Countess and the Black Prince were first cousins once removed. Joan is a descendant of Edward I's second marriage to Princess Marguerite Capet of France, after the death of his first wife, Princess Eleanor de Bourgogne of Castile and Leon. They were married on 10 October 1361 in Windsor Castle, Berkshire, England.

Many were disappointed at the Prince's choice as he eliminated a chance to form a foreign alliance with a political marriage. Two sons were born on 27 January 1365 and 6 January 1367.

However it was the younger son who became Richard II on 21 June 1377. Countess Joan saw her son become king, but not his downfall, dying on 8 August 1385 in Berkshire, England.
3. My name is Anne Neville and I was married to the Prince of Wales. Unfortunately, my second husband was accused of murdering my first husband. Who was my first husband's father?

Answer: Henry VI

Anne Neville had her own remote connection to royalty, being descended from John of Gaunt, the Duke of Lancaster. Her father was the notorious 'Kingmaker', who switched sides during the War of the Roses. Her first husband was the only son of King Henry VI and Queen Margaret.

They were married on 13 December 1470 in Chateau d'Amboise, France. Unfortunately they were married for barely six months, as he was murdered on 4 May 1471 in Gloucester, England during the Battle of Tewkesbury. However she was not to remain single for very long at all.

She married the Duke of Gloucester on 12 July 1472 in Westminster Abbey, London, England. They had one child, Edward, born in December 1473. Upon the death of her brother-in-law (Edward IV) and the disappearance of her nephews (Edward V and Richard), her husband became king as Richard III.

She died on 16 March 1485 in London, England and her husband followed her by August the same year. She is one of the few, who despite being the Princess of Wales and widowed, still became Queen.
4. I am Princess Catherine Trastamara of Castile and Leon. My two husbands were brothers, although it was never meant to be like that. My first husband, Arthur, died from a fever. How old was he when he died?

The hope of the Tudor dynasty was born on 20 September 1486 in Winchester, England. His parents were the symbol of unity between the old warring houses of Lancaster and York. They named him Arthur in order to tie him to greatness, like the legend of King Arthur.

They managed a very good political match to the youngest daughter of the Spanish Catholic Kings, Isabella and Ferdinand. Catherine and Arthur were married on 14 November 1501 in St Paul's Cathedral, London. However, the marriage did not last the year as Arthur caught a fever and died on 2 April 1502 in Shropshire, England. Catherine, of course, did not die for many years to come until 7 January 1536 in Hunts, England.
5. My name is Princess Maria Casimire Sobieska of Poland and I was married to the Stuart Old Pretender. My sister-in-law stole the throne from my husband because he was Catholic. Who was my husband's mother, whose religion created tension for myself and my husband?

Answer: Princess Marie Beatrice Eleanora d'Este of Modena

The Italian Princess was not favoured when came to her marriage with the Duke of York. As the tensions between Catholics and Protestants were already heightened, Marie would seem to be a poor choice for a future king. The heiress of England grew up with her father, George IV, as her mother, Princess Caroline, flitted off to Europe in a self-imposed exile.

She was married to the Prince of Saxe-Coburg on 2 May 1816 in London, England; and she fell pregnant within a year of marriage. However, the child was still born and Charlotte followed her child into death on 6 November 1817 in Surrey, England.

They were married on 7 December 1697 in Versailles, France. They had three sons, but only one survived childhood long enough to become Louis XV. Marie Adelaide died on 12 February 1712 in Versailles, France; with her husband to follow in six days.
